WHO: Jasper Williamson & Noëlle Zabini
WHEN: Friday 13th
WHERE: Lawyer's Office
WHAT: Truth Serum + Lawyer meetings = ...
WARNINGS: None
The lawyer’s office was bad enough without also adding in having to look at Noëlle Zabini's face, Jasper decided as he took a seat across from her in the boardroom, still waiting for the people who were paid to do the arguing to turn up. To occupy the time and, let's be real, irritate the fuck out of her, he drilled his fingers against the mahogany desk. Despite her dislike for her former step-son, Noëlle did try to keep things civil. At least, until this was over and she had the money that was rightfully hers released to her and she no longer had to worry that Jasper would turn anything she said against her. So, even though his fingers drumming across the table was already driving her crazy, she forced a smile onto her face. “Jasper, dear, I know no one enjoys waiting, but that is not going to make anyone arrive any quicker,” she said sweetly, pushing the cup of coffee she had brought for them towards him. Starbeaks wasn't an establishment she usually patroned but she was hoping the take away coffee cups would present her as a down to earth person unlikely to be interested in someone solely for their money. Which was perhaps asking too much from a cup of coffee. But every little bit helped. “Uh,” Jasper began, looking at the cup of coffee warily. “Actually, I’ll have that one”, he stated reaching for the one Noëlle had already pulled out of the tray for herself. And then returned to drumming. She took the cup he’d rejected and took a long sip to prove that he was being ridiculous. Really. As if she'd be so obvious. “Will you cut that out?” She snapped suddenly, surprising herself at her outburst. “You're annoying enough as is.” The corners of Jasper’s mouth tugged into a slight smirk before he quickly feigned innocence and covered his expression with a quick sip of what tasted like that limited edition latte Starbeaks was promoting. Who knew Noëlle deigned to drink at Starbeaks? “That’s deliberate,” he said helpfully and didn’t stop drumming. “Annoying you is one of the small pleasures I get from these interactions.” Wait — had he meant to say that? “It’s the only thing you’re going to get from these interactions,” Noëlle replied with a smirk of her own. “I can afford better lawyers than you. This is a waste of time.” “It doesn’t matter how good your lawyers are when your claim is evidently bogus, anyone can see it, it doesn’t take an expert,” he shot back. “I’m surprised no one’s knocked back before, unless you got lazy this time and forgot to filter out rich dudes with Auror sons.” What she wanted to say that there was no filtering out; she had loved Octavian and that had been her sole purpose in marrying him. Instead, what came out was “It was hard enough remembering he had children, let alone their occupations.” Jasper’s fingers pausing mid-drum and his eyebrows lifted as he stared for a second. Then reached to grab a quill from the middle of the table. “What are you doing?” He’d meant to say, ‘nothing’ and let her stress out. Instead, Jasper looked up and said, “Recording anything you say that makes you sound like the cold-hearted bitch that you are. Duh,” he tacked on. Noëlle cocked her head, taking another sip of her coffee to give herself a moment to think. Something wasn’t right. “What is the most embarrassing thing to happen to you?” she asked, testing out a theory. “The time when—“ Jasper narrowed his eyes and bit his tongue. If there was something up with the coffees, and he used it to his advantage, it would be inadmissible evidence. “... We should reschedule.” “I couldn’t agree more,” Noëlle agreed, letting out a sigh of relief that Jasper had been the one to suggest it. And that he hadn’t thought to ask her any incriminating questions. She stood up, keen to get out of there before he took advantage of this opportunity. “My lawyer will contact yours with a new date.” |
