WHO: Hestia Jones, Remus Lupin, Lucius Malfoy, and Rabastan Lestrange
WHAT: HESTIA and REMUS are caught passing out food to the Wandless in Diagon Alley by LUCIUS. The Death Eater calls in backup and they and RABASTAN duel the Order members.
WHEN: This afternoon, September 30
WHERE: Diagon Alley
WARNINGS: None, just general violence.
Lately, Diagon Alley had become even more bothersome than before. Instead of the bustle of the crowds that irritated him, especially when all he needed was to pick up a few items, it was the presence of the Wandless, who thought they could look at him and expect charity. The Ministry policy had, admittedly, some flaws, and Lucius would've preferred it if they were just banished elsewhere, but it wasn't as if he disliked it enough to toss a few sickles to them. For the most part, he ignored them as he ran his errands, having lost Rabastan in the journey somewhere. They tried to follow him, but once he threatened to Stupefy them, they stayed back. Having turned the corner, he was intent on finding Rabastan so they could leave. He had no clue where his friend could've gone, and was resolved that if he didn't find him within the next five minutes, he'd return home without him. It served him right. Lucius was, however, thwarted from this plan at the sight of two figures, one unfortunately familiar, handing out food to the Wandless. How charming, he thought, right before he blasted the food out of the Wandless' hands. "Now, now," Lucius drawled, "you should really forget your romantic dreams of charity. They're out here for a reason." Remus Lupin knew all too well the gnawing bite of hunger and of invisibility - as if one’s very existence were an obscenity or a crime - and so he empathized with those Wandless trying to simply survive through Diagon Alley. He’d happily continued to donate as he was able but with the opportunity to actually meet them, serve them and be some help, he jumped at the chance. The Unplottable refugee building was in process as was his very own Diagon-esque Marauder’s Map. But the needs were too instant - so he was here, doing as he wished someone would have done for him ten years ago. … until, of course, the Wandless who received his ham sandwich suddenly shrunk back. Remus stood to attention, his own wand at the ready to defend both of them if necessary. “Keep walking, Malfoy.” "I can't." Another curse was aimed at someone else's sandwich, already halfway to their mouth. It was amusing to see how they had started to scatter once they saw what was happening. "You and your… hopeless naiveté are in the way." A roll of the eyes. “Careful or you'll catch Poor.” His curse was deflected against Remus’ shield charm handily. “There are other ways out of this street. Go.” With a flourish, he afforded Lucius a Stinging Hex to the hands. Then -- “We aren't playing.” The hex hit his other hand, causing him to pull back and hiss in pain, but with his wand secure, he shook it off. "You're blocking the way I need to go. I could call the DMLE on you," he threatened. "They would hardly look kindly upon your activities." As more Wandless scattered, Lucius moved forward and sent ropes towards Remus, hoping to bind him in place. Hestia had been attending to the Wandless Lucius had been targeting, but they were all leaving. She couldn’t blame them, but there wasn’t time to think about that -- Remus was in trouble. She pulled her turtleneck collar over her mouth and nose, trying to remain slightly anonymous, before bounding over to the duelling wizards, an athletic form in her step. She didn’t get there quickly enough to throw her shield up in front of Remus, so instead she pointed her wand at Lucius and aimed a blasting curse at his feet, hoping to deter the fight before it got too bad. “Leave!” she barked angrily, her voice slightly muffled by her sweater, before turning to her fellow Order member to see if he was okay. Remus, however, shielded from the ropes and they disintegrated into embers at his feet. He glanced over at Hestia and gave her a nod of assent. The real tragedy was that the Wandless continued to scatter. Their hopes of bringing further aide to them died as Lucius stood there longer. He spoke in time with Hestia’s blasting curse: “I bet you like to spoil the end of movies too, don’t you.” The curse threw him onto his back and it took him a moment to pull himself upright and shake off his disorientation. It was a lucky shot, but she wouldn't get another one. Lucius kicked aside some of the debris and raised his wand, aimed it at the woman, and sent a furious Slashing Hex at her. Aware that they were all in public, and he had an image to maintain (in his mind, at least), he was forced to use ordinary spells, ones that wouldn't cause as much damage as they would had he chosen a Dark spell, but as long as it did the job, he was fine. But he was also getting impatient, tired of Remus Lupin's sanctimonious lines and the insult that suggested Lucius watched movies, so he added a Banishing Charm at the same target. Hopefully, the combination would send her flying back and out of the way. Hestia, back foolishly turned as she checked on Remus, cried out as the Slashing Hex tore through her jacket and jumper, going even further still to slice into her back like a hot knife through butter. She gasped, crumpling into the pain for a split second before dragging herself back up, whirling around to point her wand at her assailant. She did not, however, get to retaliate as Malfoy’s second spell sent her flying backwards into a stone wall. Her head bounced against it with a crack, blinding pain shooting through her skull, distracting her from the pain radiating from her shoulder (dislocated) and arm (broken, awkwardly). She tried to right herself but kept sliding down, a sob building up in her throat. “Remus,” she called out, fighting back tears and bile, her consciousness threatening to slip. The exchange between Hestia and Lucius happened within seconds and Remus, appalled that Lucius would engage in hexes so violent in public, was off half a beat before his wand flourished again and he growled out “Expelliarmus!” This was followed up by a charm that attempted to up-end Lucius and let him stay there until someone sought to either rid him of his coin or let him walk aright. It also gave him time to kneel beside Hestia and support her with his arms. “Don’t worry, okay? We’re going to get you out of here. Can you stand? If you can’t, I can carry you.” He was afraid to side-along from here afraid her injuries would cause a splinching. They needed to be in a quieter location. The Wandless were still disbanding, shrinking away from the scene even as another player arrived at the duel. The din and chaos of the battle had finally caught Rabastan’s attention. He materialized behind Lucius, his wand in one hand and a bag from Flourish and Blotts in the other. “I can’t take you anywhere, can I?” was muttered to the fallen Lucius. At the sight of Lupin, a broad smile bloomed across his face. He should’ve killed him at King’s Cross — now was the time to correct that mistake. Slashing his wand through the air, he greeted the vigilantes by hurtling jagged shards of ice at them — and the Wandless. "If you hadn't wandered off," Lucius said through gritted teeth as he tried to get up, to no avail. His wand was to the right of him, just out of his reach. "Then I wouldn't be in this predicament!" Remus, whose focus had been on maneuvering Hestia into an appropriate position to leave as quickly as possible, was not quick enough to shield them from the ice shards. He took the brunt of them to his back and threw his arm out to the side to flourish, effectively creating a wave of heat to melt some of the shards before reaching the Wandless. When he whipped his head back around, he snarled to see Rabastan Lestrange with Malfoy now. “Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee. You really must pardon me, but I will now take my leave of you.” He turned to see that the Wandless were gone, then with a clutch to an iron ring in his pocket (a portkey, thanks to their Order lessons) so too were they. By that time Lucius had regained his wand, the pair had just left, taken away by the pull of the Portkey. He undid the curse and got up, brushing his clothes off. "You couldn't have arrived sooner?" Rabastan’s shoulders rose and fell in a careless shrug. “I was busy,” he replied, waving the bag of books in his hand. “I came as soon as I heard Lucius Malfoy was being embarrassed by vigilantes.” "For your information, I was able to incapacitate the other one before you arrived." Lucius' pride did sting at how he'd been knocked flat, especially with Rabastan witnessing it, but he wasn't about to be talked out of his accomplishments today. He waved his wand, setting the tables and chairs upright. When Remus Lupin inevitably made a fuss about this, at least he couldn't say they had destroyed valuable Diagon Alley property. "Now help me put this back together." Rabastan heaved a sigh as he raised his wand. “I’m only doing this because I don’t want to hear you complain.” |
