Former Auror Falls at the Ministry By Narcissa Malfoy After a long storied career with the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and relatively new seat on the Wizengamot, Gawain Robards was killed Monday evening. In hitwitch Chelsea Corner own words, last night “Auror [sic] Robards signaled for DMLE reinforcements and when Jasper Williamson and I arrived on the scene, there were three Death Eaters there. Auror [sic] Williamson and I took on one each in different areas of the Wizengamot offices and my goal was to distract the Death Eater enough to get back to Auror [sic] Robards.” By the time Corner was able to extricate herself, there was nothing to be done. “We found Auror [sic] Robard’s body and quickly called it in. When the medical examiner arrived, they confirmed that he was dead.” Robards’ death has left the Ministry reeling and its employees wondering how such a great man could fall. Magical Maintenance worker Patrick Moss, who was dispatched to clean up the mess left in this terrible tragedy’s wake, only had this to say: “I don’t understand. How?” Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange was able to shed light on exactly how something like this could happen. “It was immediately clear Robards was out of practice,” Lestrange said, “no longer the fearsome Auror he liked to pretend he was.” It seems Robards was largely responsible for the mess made of the Wizengamot chambers as he fought against what Lestrange felt was inevitable. “He missed me more than he came anywhere near me and all but destroyed his office and the upper level of the Wizengamot. It was no surprise then, when I defeated him. He begged for his life, sobbed like an infant, but Robards is proof of what happens when you cross the Dark Lord. He had to die, and he did when I threw him over the edge of the mezzanine and he fell to his death.” A deeply respected man at the Ministry and within the community of Tinworth, Robards would’ve celebrated thirty years with the Ministry next year. An ‘89 graduate from Hufflepuff, he joined the Auror training programme immediately out of Hogwarts with excellent NEWT scores in the requisite courses. He was responsible for the arrest of a number of Death Eaters after You Know Who’s rise to power in the early aughts, which propelled his career onward, making him an invaluable member of the now defunct Auror Office. Robards was the man responsible for the training of countless of our former Aurors, eventually earning him a promotion to Deputy Head Auror and then Head. His recent Wizengamot campaign was hard won, but many residents of Tinworth still felt Robards deserved it, despite the tragedies that marked his campaign. “I was elated,” recalled Isabelle Pickering, one of Robards’ old neighbours. “I felt hope that things could change, and that Gawain would be the one to do it. He was always trying to make things better for everyone.” The two hitwizards who responded to Robards’ call for help had only nice things to say about the deceased Wizengamot member, as well. Williamson deeply admired the man and insisted everyone worth their salt in the DMLE looked up to Robards, while Corner said, “Auror [sic] Robards was a great man and a great Auror who only wanted to do right by the people he protected. It’s devastating that he’s gone.” Even standing in the shambles made of her office, Wizengamot member Mildred Thymblethorpe thought Robards had much to accomplish yet. “He was a kind man and a good listener. I think he would’ve undoubtedly returned the Wizengamot to its former glory.” Respected and talented as he may have been, however, his fate was sealed. “Let Robards' errors be a lesson to those who think they can undermine the Dark Lord,” said Lestrange. “You cannot oppose him and get away with it. You cannot test the Death Eaters' patience and live to tell the tale. For those who think they still have a choice between one side or another in this war, let this be a reminder that the true choice you face is one between life and death.” |
