Who: Everyone
What: Something very unfortunate
Where: Second Year Classroom, Nanakamado
When: Friday morning.
Why: I'm sure everyone wants to know.

The english teacher looked like she'd seen a ghost. Two more teachers had showed up when she'd screamed, the first of them leading the trembling woman away from the classroom. The second stood in the doorway, instucting the students to keep back.

Behind him in the classroom, slumped over the desk that had previously been his, was the body of Sato Kei.

"Call an ambulance while you're there!" He shouted down the hall to his workmates. "The cops, too!"

A crowd of students was starting to develop outside. Some of them were second years trying to get into thier classroom. Others had been drawn by the scream, the shouting or the crowd. The teacher in the doorway shook his head.

"Back to your classrooms. All of you."

Kouchisei was behind the crowd, listening.

"Oh my God..."

"Missing? I saw him! Subako, Kigakiga, Iburi North and the kitchen back at the dorm."

There was another voice. "He lived in the dorms. There really wasn't anyone who'd notice."

The second again. "It's morning. I'd understand if it were later but," a thumb-jab down the corridor, "he's not got keys!"

Kouchisei was silent for a few moments. He shook his head, and then reached his hand to the shoulder in front and tapped gently. "Hm. What's gone on?"

The world had gone completely silent. All around Toshimi was chatter and clamor, but she didn't hear any of it. She'd been close to the classroom when the English teacher had let out quite a scream, so Toshimi was one of the students at the front of the crowd.

Now she stared, transfixed, at the corpse slumped over his school desk. She felt numb. Maybe she was still asleep back at the dorm. That must have been it. It was just another nightmare. She didn't feel anything, after all...

No. Someone was tapping her shoulder. She jumped with a start and turned to see another student from her class. Her sense of reality came rushing back to her, and she heard people talking. "Th-that's Sato Kei," she told him, craning her neck back to look into the classroom. "I think he's-- I think...he's dead..." Toshimi hardly believed the words she was stammering.

Removing his hand from Toshimi's shoulder, Kouchisei watched students in the crowd as a distraction. His mind was racing: Sato-kun was dead. He thought of his mother's illness and subsequent death. She'd died so differently... His throat was too dry: he ran a finger around his collar. Grief was a private affair for him - he stopped straining to see what had happened. This was uncomfortable. Quiet.

He looked at Toshimi herself. They knew each other in class. She seemed frozen. In shock, perhaps? She didn't seem the sort to hold morbid curiosity.

“I... I had no idea."

He stepped back some. The thought of seeing Kato's body made him feel like a voyeur.

"I think we should go.”

The walls around her seemed to be swaying, pulling in around the classroom door. Yes, Sato Kei was definitely dead in there. As the fact sunk in, Toshimi felt like someone was trying to pull her stomach down onto the floor. As she saw Kei's body there, the nauseating feeling was getting worse and worse.

She wanted to get away from it and go somewhere else. Somewhere where she could have a drink of water, or at least sit down before her legs gave out from under her. Kouchisei's suggestion seemed to come from her own thoughts; if he hadn't said anything, she would have probably worked her way out of the crowd herself.

Since he'd moved, Toshimi had room to slip out of the crowd. She nodded her agreement and started moving. It didn't matter where, as long as it was away. She just wanted as much distance between her and that dead body as possible. Without realizing it, she'd started running...

Kouchisei walked. There was a horrible taste in the air - cold, metallic and bloody - and the floor was moving oddly, with the voices of the crowd louder than normal instead of whispering softly. It was like he’d been clouted dizzy. Seeing the classroom as bone-chillingly cold and eerily quiet, he had no desire to be in that place. It didn't remind him of hospitals, where he found feelings of warmth and comfort.

He was, he saw, still behind Toshimi. He hadn't lifted his head to check till now. To think of returning to class and Kato not being there... He shivered, finding it strange. Things would be different.

"... God. I'm sorry you had to see that."

Toshimi blanked her mind, not allowing anything in except her legs moving. At least that way she didn't lose her composure. She could let body memory take over and, in some small way, be running the bases at a game. Or at least somewhere less...disturbing.

After some distance, she heard Kouchisei speak and came to a gradual stop.
"Oh, no, I..." she responded vaguely. She wasn't going to bring it up, but it wasn't the first time she'd seen a dead body. Still, the experience didn't make it any easier--if anything, it made it even more upsetting. "I just...can't believe...I mean...Sato-san..." There were no words for it. Shock, fear, grief, anxiety...Toshimi knew these words, but they weren't enough. Hadn't she helped Sato Kei cook a fish in the dorm kitchen just a couple weeks ago? Well, he wouldn't be cooking fish anymore... "It just...didn't seem like it was his time," she voiced.

It wasn’t the first time in his life Kouchisheu had felt his heart tighten, and he stopped at the wall. He looked round the corridor, at its clean and sunlit windows, the second-year classrooms and mixed students, and realised how much this place would change. The time since his mother's passing, and the unending stagnation and loss was something he was finding it difficult to come to terms with. It might have dulled his senses.

"Time. Regardless of whether the school remains open or not, I just... I never expected to see that." He hadn't. Neither had anyone else, it seemed. "... Are you all right?"

"I-I'll be fine," replied Toshimi. To reinforce this, she tried to force a smile. The result was a little bit jarring: she was so used to smiling when she didn't want to that she was almost convincing, but the situation still proved a bit much for her. "How about you?"

"You think they'll close the school?" wondered Toshimi. She was still getting used to the way expensive private schools ran things, but then, she wasn't sure whether or not her old high school would have remained open either, if a student was found murdered there. Murdered... it occurred to her that she hadn't confirmed this to be a fact, and that she hadn't thought of it until now. But it wasn't like people just died sitting at their school desks in the middle of the night. "Who do you think put him there?" she wondered, not really expecting an answer. "I don't think that there was anyone who hated Sato-san enough to..." she trailed off, not wanting to say the next two words.

“... Fine.” Kouchisei turned his head, looking at the floor. “The school…”

Her smile was uncomfortable. All it showed was awkwardness; the situation hadn't a reason to be good. For the briefest of moments, he thought about leaving – his classmates would not notice him walking away from them and he would feel better somehow, by going to the library or the cafeteria.

Or maybe not.

"I'm assuming the head or somebody will do something to keep it open for the foreseeable future. Regardless of whether it does or not... it certainly won't stop midterms."

Toshimi nodded at this. No matter what happened, exams were still exams. There was no doubt about that. "Yes," she said, "it's best if we just focus on them, I guess." Already, she was starting to bury this in her mind under practical things, and perhaps it was better that way. "The school is a pretty large organization, and this probably isn't enough to shut it down permanently," she reasoned. As messed-up as it was, one person's death wasn't really going to change anything. This was a fact she could accept, for the most part.

She turned her head back in the direction of the classroom. "But...depending on what's determined, we might not be able to use our classroom for a while." Perhaps this, too, was for the best. She might have been able to keep from thinking about Sato Kei that person out here, but sitting there in the classroom and seeing that desk would be a whole different story.

Kouchisei looked to the classroom when Toshimi did, and fingered the straps of his bag. Reading. It would get his mind off what had happened. But his classmate was right in mentioning how it was best to focus on the midterms. He flicked the strap back and forth half a minute before he was forced to listen to the tannoy system.

Tipping his head back, Kou looked around. Who could he go home with? Not Toshimi. He'd have liked to [she seemed pleasant enough], but she lived in the dorms. He just wanted to get out. The air was too stifling: tense and dry.

“Toshimi-san, I understand if you want to get to the assembly hall."

She looked up at the nearest speaker as the announcement came on, listening silently as she tried to piece everything together. She hadn't thought of it, but the dorms would probably face some issues, too--although when was the last time Sato Kei had even been in the dorm?

"I probably should," she agreed. "There's safety in numbers, as they say." Being able to walk away from this situation was really the best thing she could have asked for. Even if she was just going to end up back at the dorm where he'd lived, it was better than staying at the school.

"Then, I'll see you later, Kouchisei-san." She waved a little as she turned and headed for the assembly hall, still trying to paste a smile on her face.

Kanaye overheard one of the younger students talking, and he did not like what he heard.
"I think he's-- I think...he's dead..."
Kanaye shuddered a bit, and, after noticing one of his classmates trying to get the students to disperse, decided to help him.
Standing as tall as he could, and in the most authoritative voice he could muster, he announced loudly "Ok, everyone, calm down. We need to calm down and just go to our classes. Listen to the teachers, they know what they're doing."

Kanaye immediately stopped talking. What WAS class 2-2 supposed to do? He shook his head and turned to the underclassman.
"I have no idea." he responded in a far more ordinary voice. "All I know is that there is some kind of accident, and that...that..." he finished, dropping off before he finished.

Maeko went quiet for a second when she got an answer. She hadn't expected an answer, she'd been talking half to herself. In her few second of silence she overheard other people mumblimng in the same way she had been.

"...d-dead?" She said, freezing as she repeated a nearby student's whispering. "T-there's a corpse in there? No- No way!"

With that she cruled up and charged into a gap between the students in front of her. It wasn't that she wanted to see a dead body, she really didn't believe there was one there. But she had to prove to herself that there was nothing there.

Kanaye was shocked when the seemingly-timid 2nd year charged right through him. He took a moment to regain his proper senpai composure, then proceeded to dash after her. "H-Hey, wait! You can't just run over there! You'll trample someone!" He shouted.

Maeko had already run right into someone. The gym teacher in the doorway didn't seem to notice, though, too distracted by barking orders to react to being charged by a small girl with anything but moving himself to make it harder to get past him. He stopped Maeko from entering the classroom but she could see past him easily enough.

Kei, slumped over his desk. He didn't look dead. Maybe he'd fainted and that's what all the fuss was about? But if he'd fainted why had the teacher screamed and why weren't they aking him to the nurse's room?

"He really is..." She mumbled and stepped back, bumping into Kanaye as he chased after her. Acknowledging his presence here for the first time she spoke to him without turning around.

"S-senpai, he- he's really dead."

Kanaye gasped at the sight. There he was, a boy just younger then him, spread over his desk, like a student sleeping in class. But Kanaye doubted that a sleeping student would require an ambulance. He swallowed and tried to compose himself. "I-I guess so." He shook his head and turned to Maeko. "Did you know him?" he asked, at a loss for something to say, but wanting to say something.

Kanaye nodded absent-mindedly. The murdered...No, DEAD boy, he corrected himself, had been skipping school. Maybe he had run into some bad company and...
Kanaye shook his head to clear his thoughts. He needed to stop thinking like this. He turned to Maeko.

Maeko nodded, she wasn't sure if she wanted to look again. Logically he wouldn't have gone anywhere but maybe she'd just been seeing things. There couldn't...really be a dead student in the classroom.

She decided against it.

"The...the club room for the anti-bullying club. I don't think any of the other classes are using it right now." She said, regaining her composure. "...I'll wait there until the crowd's died down and they've figured out what they want my class to do."

Just as Kanaye was about to speak, the PA system turned on. Silent for a few minutes while he listened to the announcement, he turned to Maeko and smiled weakly.
"Well, it looks like they found out what they want your class to do." He started walking away, and then turned back. "There is no way they're going to cancel exams, so try not to think about it, alright?" He smiled again, and then started walking away.

Hiroshi had been on his way to class when he heard the scream. Despite himself, he had rushed to its source, seeing a crowd gather. He watched the scene for a few moments, apart from the crowd, thinking. What had happened? It didn't seem important. The teachers were telling people to get back to class. Hiro sighed and loosed his tie. He approached the crowd, the younger students.

"Okay, okay, I'm sure the teachers have it under control. We need to stand back and let the adults do their jobs. Come on, everyone should get back to class. I'm sure we'll find out more later...come on, we have classes we need to be getting to."

The tall girl just in front of Hiroshi turned to him, lips pursed, and eyed him up and down.

"And just who put you in charge?" Kiriko asked. Without waiting for an answer, she looked back to the crowd, again craning her neck but making no effort to push her way through like many of the other students.

"It's the adult's job to break it up. If you have so much faith in them, why don't you let them do it?"

Looking impatient, she turned back to Hiroshi.
"Do you know his name?"

The girl's retort took Hiro by surprise. "No one, but standing around making guesses about what's really going on isn't going to help anything." He replied a bit tersely. "We all need to stand back, go to class, and I'm sure once the teachers have more information, we'll be told everything we need to know." He told her. Someone had DIED? Well...it was disconcerting, but nothing they could do for whoever it was now.

"I'm just trying to help out." Hiro stated. "I'm sure it's appreciated trying to help break this crowd up. The teachers probably don't know anything right now, we need to all stand back and let them and...the police sort this all out first. Right now you're all just getting in the way."

He shakes his head. "I haven't caught his name yet, so I can't say. I'm sure once the adults know more, they'll tell us. Now, miss, I think it would be for the best if we all got to class. We do have exams coming up, after all."

Once the PA announcement was over, Hiro nodded. "All right, all right, everyone, you heard them. We should all head to our assigned areas. Looks like no school today, but we should all use today to study for our exams, right?" After all, Nanakamado took its exams very seriously.

"Come on, we've gotta get a move on." He instructed to the crowd of students, the older student seeing this as his duty.

Carrying his violin case in one hand and his bookbag in the other, Yuu attempted to peer over the heads of the students in front of him. Apparently they were supposed to return to their classrooms, but the crowd was in front of his class...where, exactly, was he supposed to go?

Maybe he could take a peek inside the room if he really tried; he was one of the taller students in his year, after all. Getting up on tiptoes, he craned his neck past the heads of the crowd in front of him. For a moment, he thought he could see someone slouched over a desk, seemingly unable to sit upright.

His eyes widened and the heels of his feet hit the floor, his expression blank. "...who is that?" he asked no one in particular.

"Name doesn't much matter. They won't be using it anymore," Reizo snorted out, head cocked to one side as he stared over Yuu's shoulder, the heads of the crowd, and into the classroom. He was never one to rubberneck or gossip, but some things he just couldn't ignore and a teacher shouting about the cops was definitely one of them.

He frowned and shouldered deeper into the crowd to get a better look. Hopefully there weren't any signs of foul play, because if there were.. well, it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure that they might start questioning someone like him first. The immediate crowd around him pushed away from him, creating a small halo of open space around him, which he was either oblivious to or ignored.

Yuu started at the voice, glancing over his shoulder. He recognized the student immediately--Shirai Reizo, first-year, rumored to be the son of the local oyabun. Not someone he would choose to associate with, but not someone he would ignore either; even if the rumors weren't true, he felt fairly certain that the younger boy was more than capable of hurting him, and with a reputation like that, who would risk it?

"I suppose you're right." He took advantage of the distance the other students gave Reizo, peering further into the room. The boy at the desk almost looked like he were merely dozing off, but Reizo was right; he was too still to be alive. Had he committed suicide? Yuu bit his lip in thought. He edged further into the crowd, trying to get a look at the boy's face. What if he was a friend? "What a terrible thing...."

“Real tearjerker,” the banchou replied, rolling his eyes and muttering something about the suicide rate in an amazing display of compassion. Had that callous disregard for death been bred into him, or had he assimilated it after watching a couple of movies and doing his best to emulate his pops? It didn’t matter where it came from, it was something he’d already had to put to use. Death was no stranger to his extended family.

Reizo turned away from the classroom and picked out a few faces he recognized in the crowd; Ikeda was the only one whose full name he could recall, but there was also the boy who’d he’d just spoken to -- time to make acquaintances.

“Oi, dead folk that interesting, senpai?” The word was spat out at the end of his sentence as if it were something foul and poisonous as he found himself staring over the shorter(?) boy’s shoulder again.

For a moment, Yuu tried to think of a way to respond to that remark that wasn't insulting or rude; nothing came to mind, so he simply let it slide. Still, who in the world would say something like that?

That time, he managed to get a better look inside, recognizing the boy, although the name did not come immediately to mind. Then Reizo abruptly addressed him. "What?" He turned away from the room, looking up towards him. "It isn't just that he's dead, I kind of know him. He was in music club, I think. He played the cello." Poorly, he thought, but kept that to himself.

He had half a mind to ask him if he found it that fascinating too, given that he was still hovering over the place, snarling out questions and remarks, but he placed some value in his health.

“Fascinating,” he answered nonplussed, amusement draining from his face until his eyes dropped to the case the other boy was carrying. A grin split his face in half, turning it into something altogether wolfish and threatening; it was full of hateful promise and malicious daring.

“So you’re in band, senpai?” That word again in the same exact tone. Like he was spitting it into Yuu’s face. “You better be careful with that thing. Looks like it means something to you.” His tone was light and amiable, but the way he was staring at it lent his words a whole other meaning. “If anyone messes with it or you, don’t be afraid to tell your kohai. I live to serve.”

He patted the other boy on the shoulder, a little harder than necessary and walked away, moseying through the path in the crowd that appeared in front of him with his hands stuck deep in his pockets. Whispers about the encounter threaded through the crowd, but were quickly replaced with the previous topic: the dead boy.

Reizo paused and waved at Yuu over his shoulder then disappeared down the steps to the first year’s floor.

At the thinly-veiled threat, Yuu tensed unconsciously, drawing his violin case closer to his body; but he resolved himself not to show fear or anger. "Thank you for your concern, Shirai-san," he answered back, knowing Reizo would probably lash out if he were referred to by anything that would imply a lower status. "I'll bear that in mind."

He nodded to the wave, waiting until he was just out of sight to relax. Before he could speak, however, the intercom crackled to life as one of the staff spoke a brief message. Once it finished, he headed for Science Lab 1, now that his curiosity had been satisfied.

It was a terrible thing, after all. Such a terrible thing.

Inspirations always did strike her at the oddest of times, and this was no different. Having planted herself near one of the desks in an empty practice room, sketchbook open on her lap, Shiori had a feeling that she was going to be late to class but couldn't quite bring herself to care. She had a hand buried in her hair while her other continued the doodle, fingers deftly maneuvering the pencil from the lead to eraser and back as she analyzed and perfected her piece.

So lost in her work that she failed to notice the hustle and bustle of students chattering outside of the room, and the few seconds she tuned back into the real world she figured the bell hadn't rang yet. When she got involved in a doodle, she didn't break her focus, and nothing else mattered to her.

It was when the PA announcement came on that Shiori finally looked up and realized something wasn't right. Maybe it was the fact that they were even having a PA announcement, or maybe something about how students were to leave the building immediately, but the wrongness of the situation was obvious.

Shutting her book with a firm snap, she tucked it back into her bag and exited the room, determined to find out what was going on. Her best bet was probably going to the science lab, where her class was supposed to be meeting in.

Misaki glanced around at the other students as the PA went off. She had been getting ready to go to class and had just put her shoes in her locker and quickly asked what had happened.

"We're not sure, someone said that it has to do with Classroom 2-B. We better get to our classroom before we get into trouble." a boy told her and she nodded.

"Okay," Misaki nodded and pulled out her shoes to take with her. Walking with the other students she heard older students talking about something happening in the upper classrooms and she was worried. She wondered what was happening and what was going on and she noticed a lot of students heading for the Science lab. She looked among the students but didn't see Sato-senpai. Maybe he was hiding out, she would ask him later what had been happening. He'd promised to help her study that afternoon.
