Who: Maeko, Kanaye
What: Talking.
Where: The garden.
When: Post-dungeon, before beach.
Why: Because it's a safe place.

After her outburst in the dungeon, Maeko had been almost completely silent. Her ability to speak had left her the second Keiichi's shadow had fallen. As had, after struggling through an evening shift and back home and up the stairs on sheer adrenaline, her ability to stand.

Without the energy to even unroll her futon, she'd just slept with her head rested on the stupid cat doll.

The energy hadn't yet returned but Maeko was no stranger to forcing herself to stand and moving on sheer stubbornness. She picked up her phone at what felt like a horrible horrible early hour but was actually 8 and how had she slept for nine hours without not feeling not-tired and her neck hurt, she should have just unrolled the stupid futon.

And she sent a typo-ridden 'I'm headed for the garden. I'll meet you there if you show up'. And began stumbling down the stairs.

She didn't live far from noodle alley so she made it there quickly enough. The hands had attempted to but another blanket on her (why did they keep thinking she needed blankets? it was august) as she shuffled through the butterfly room into the garden.

She made it to somewhere in the centre before she let herself sit, in what was less sitting more her legs giving out and toppling to the ground.

And then she waited in silence. Sat on the ground, the various flowers were above her head. It was difficult to tell she was even there.

"You don't have to listen to them, yaknow. Just make sure they don't find out. And which would be worse: Doing so, and finding out they didn't like it, and doing it anyway and maybe getting in trouble, or not doing so, do it anyway, and definitely get in trouble."

Kanaye squeezed her hand back. "...So what was it?" He said under his breath.

"Getting in trouble isn't the problem. Maeko said, shaking her head. "It's...I can't not do what I'm told. But if they don't tell me anything it's fine."

"If you still even want me around then-" She cut off, finishing her question by nodding.

"...Well, that's one way to go around it. You should try to rebel against your parents more. It's what's being a teenager's all about, after all."

Kanaye stop, turns to Maeko, looks at her slowly with an unreadable expression...

And slowly moves forward and kisses her on the lips in the most romantic was possible.

It would probably have been a lot more romantic were they not mid-emerging from noodle alley onto a crowded street. Maeko didn't pull away immediately, letting thier lips touch first (because sometimes even she could work out when doing something would give entirely the wrong message) but then moved back, shaking her head.

"People'll stare." She said, shaking her head. "Not in public, okay?"

Kanaye looked sad for a moment, but sighed. "...Sorry, Maeko-chan. I really screwed that one up, didn't I?" He sighed again. "I'm really sorry. Can we try that again...Later? Please?" Kanaye was begging at this point.

A whole 15 seconds. And he was already acting kind of pathetic.

"It's fine. Just don't do it again, okay?"

She sighed, squeezing his hand again. And then smiled. "Don't act so stupid. Of course we can."

"...Thanks. Sorry, Maeko-chan. I'm just so happy, I..."

He squeezed back and smiled. "Well, let's get on with the shopping, so we can try that again later, right?"

"I'm glad you're happy." And it sounded lame but she was. It was a relief to see him smiling and to know that something she'd done had made something better for someone.

She nodded, smiling and heading into the grocery store.

"Yeah, of course." She said, looking through cabbages to check them for rot.

"Thanks, Maeko-chan. I'm glad you're happy, too!" Kanaye smiled.

Kanaye had no idea what she was doing, but he started looking through the cabbages, too. Just so he can do something. "How's Misaki-san?" He asked, pleasantly. "I heard you two made up?"

"Aoi-san? I havn't seen her since back then. I think she's taking Ito-san's shadow kind of hard." She selected a satisfactory cabbage and moved on to onions with a quiet 'hmm, I think that's all we're out of' adressed to herself.

"I'll probably check up on her some time before we all head off. It's difficult, though. I never know where she's staying."

"Well, naturally. I took your shadow just as badly." Kanaye shrugged, following her. "And given we weren't actually dating at the time...I can't even imagine what's going on."

"Yeah. I don't think she would be in the dorms, anymore, given you moved out. So..." Kanaye shrugged again. "Well, I'm sure she'll appreciate it."

"Sorry about that, I was..." Renju's had probably come closer to killing them all and Tom's might have lied but she was the only one who had actually betrayed anyone. It was a wonder anyone on the team trusted her. And she wasn't forgetting that any time soon "I was kind of awful."

"I think she was in the dorms when the incident with Ito-san's shadow happenned. But she was at home when her mother-" Silence. But the look on her face communicated all that really needed to be said about Misaki's mother. "And I'm sure she's been spending time at the flower shop, too."

She shrugged again.

"I'll hunt her down at some point, though."

"Not your fault, Maeko-chan. I'm getting over it." Kanaye nodded. "So you don't need to worry. Just don't dress up as a witch anytime soon, ok?" Kanaye scratched the back of his head.

"That's really weird. I mean, why would she move that much? Seems weird..." Kanaye shrugged and smiled. "Well, I'm sure you will, Maeko-chan!"

"I really, really was not intending to." Maeko said, sighing as she located a third onion that was not-stupid enough.

"I think that's all I was supposed to pick up..." She said, talking to herself again, and headed to the counter to pay.

"I'm not sure." She answered, turning as she waited for the parttimer (was that Toshimi? It couldn't be, she'd seen Toshimi working at wild duck burger the other day.) to count change. "I guess she's indecisive? Or just likes moving around a lot? I don't really know."

"Well. Good. Thanks, Maeko-chan!" Kanaye smiled and laughed.

...Toshimi? Kanaye had to be seeing things... "Well, indecisive does pretty much describe everything about Misaki-san, so that makes sense."

"You're welcome, I guess." Maeko turned back to get her change and then held the bag of cabbage and onions up as if it were something to be celebreated. "This is all I needed to get. I timed my time off work a few days before we set off, just in case. So." A very obviously faked laugh. "I'm glad I did. I had a shift last night right after we got back from that place. I felt like I was going to die the whole time."

And awkward pause. Because in light of everything that was some really unfortunate wording right there. "I'm done, anyway. Aside from packing and stuff I don't think I have any other errands to run today."

"Yeah. I guess if I call her in advance I'll know where she is."

Kanaye winced. "Owch. Right after that place? That has got to suck..."

Kanaye ignored the horrible wording and instead nodded. "Oh, that's good. Want me to walk you to your house?" Kanaye smiled. "To the building, at least."

"It's not the first time." She said, thinking. "I guess I'm getting used to it by now, it's just tiring on top of tiring. Going in right after Sonozaki-san's place was way worse."

She shrugged, smiling. "That'd be nice. If you want to do something else I'll just drop this off and head out again."

"You went in after..." Kanaye said in disbelief, shuddering. "...That would really suck. Cold..." He shivered a bit.

"Oh? That's great!" Kanaye smiled. "Let's get going, then!" With a skip, Kanaye started walking out of the store.

"I couldn't exactly just not show up. I already missed more than a week without notice when I- yeah. It was unpleasant."

"Okay!" Maeko said, smiling. Gingerly, she still wasn't entirely sure it was acceptable, she took Kanaye's hand.

Kanaye squeezed her hand and smiled at Maeko. "Thanks, Maeko-chan. Thanks."

"Sorry. I'll stop talking about it." Maeko said, feeling the tremble.

She took the lead more than she really needed to, leading Kanaye back down the noodle alley shortcut and trying to think up something happy to say.

"Yu- Seiko...-chan" Man, using given names and informal honouriffics for Seiko as she insisted was difficult. "Seiko-chan says that she'll be able to pick up firewords while we're on the trip. Is there a kind you like? I don't know too much about them."

Kanaye smiled. "Seiko-chan's watching fireworks with us? Cool!" He shook his head, still grinning. "Nah. I don't know much about them either. I just want some that look pretty, that's all. Maybe ones that make special shapes?"

Maeko nodded. "I kind of arranged it wit her before you asked at the waterpark. We can still watch fireworks together on our own, though. It's not like there's some sort of rule that says you can only watch fireworks once."

"Are those real? I thought they just happenned in comics." Maeko thought for a few seconds. "Ah well, I'll ask her to look out for that kind, at least."
