Who: Seiko, Tom.
What: A friendly visit.
Why: Seiko has to say thanks.
Where: Tom's dorm room.
When: After Tom gave her the knives.

Seiko stood outside Tom's room about to knock, one hand raised and the other clutching a few books to her chest. She was a bit shy about just knocking on someone's door unannounced, at least someone who she didn't know hugely well anyway. She knocked a couple of times quickly.

"Hey Sagaki-san it's Seiko." she called, just in case he didn't like opening his door to the unknown.

There was the sound of some thing scraping on the other side of Tom's door few a second, and then silence as the door unlocked. Then Tom opened it. His hair was mussed, even more so then usual, and he still wore his pajamas. His sleeping clothes amounted to little more then a pair of loose pants. Despite the fact that he had obviously just woken up, Tom seemed fully alert. He looked at Seiko, and then peered out into the hallway, to make sure no one was around.

"Yukizaki-san... is something wrong?"

Seiko's face didn't show the surprise she was suddenly experiencing at seeing Tom shirtless, not that she was horrified. She had a feeling that after this she may have to find Kozue and tell her exactly what she had seen...

"Oh no, nothing is wrong." She shifted her weight from one foot to the other. "I didn't mean to wake you, I just thought I'd come over to give you something as thanks for the knives you gave me." she smiled at him brightly, clearly she had been very touched by his help.

"I know you gave them to me out of kindness, but I...wanted to repay you, cause you are also going to help me fight and well, I really appreciate it."

Tom however did show surprise. Despite the number of times people had stopped by his room since they saved Renju, he still wasn't used to this kindness.

"Uh... yeah.. that's... you didn't have to do that. I... umm... why?" He stammered out his response, and rubbed his eyes to make sure that he wasn't still asleep.

Seiko blinked at Tom's apparent confusion.

"You were kind to me, and you have helped me, so I want to repay you, or at least show I appreciate what you have done for me." Seiko now looked confused herself, wasn't Tom used to people thanking him? After all he was helping other people train.

"But um, I got you these." She held out the books in her arms. "They're detective novels, from a second hand bookshop cause I thought maybe if they are older you wouldn't have read them." she smiled again. She had asked around the other members of the group who she knew well enough to ask what Tom liked.

Tom looked at the books, and took them from Seiko like they were something precious. He also stared at them like they were something utterly foreign. He looked dumbstruck.

"These are for me? To keep?" Tom seemed to be trying to wrap his brain around this idea, and he was failing.

"You... got these... for me? You went to a bookstore, with the intention of getting something for me... and then bought these, specifically for me? Y-you didn't like... already have them, you... you bought me a present?"

Seiko's mouth fell open a little in shock, Tom had never had a present? She had a terrible urge to hug him so gave an odd twitch as she restrained herself from doing so.

"To keep forever." she said trying to understand how on Earth Tom could be this perplexed by this.

"I don't read detective books, so I went and asked the others what you'd like. I thought books, but I wasn't sure what kind." She looked embarrassed at her inability to know the perfect present for someone on sight. "They said you probably would like detective ones."

"And so I knew of a good book shop with second hand and vintage books so..." she gestured at the books. "I thought it would be nice, um." she wasn't sure what to say, how could someone not understand getting a present?

Tom's shoulders slumped and he let out a slow breath, he almost looked like he was going to cry.

"No one... no one has ever given me something like this before... Akuba-san and Aoi-san gave me soup when I was sick, but no one has ever... and you asked around?" Tom paused for a moment and straightened up.

"Am I going to die? Because people on the team only really care about me this much when they think I'm in some kind of danger..."

Seiko wanted to hug him, she really really did, but several things were still stopping her, mostly because he lacked a shirt and also because she was worried it might just confuse him further. She compromised by touching his hand that was holding the books for a second.

"You aren't going to die." Seiko looked perplexed. "Its just a thank you, and yes I asked around I wanted to get something you'd really enjoy rather than just something generic."

"I was worried it wasn't a good enough gift, I mean I can't cook and I thought maybe you were used to getting books. But..." Seiko waved her hand, "How can no one have given you a present?"

Tom looked down at Seiko's hand. He took a slow, deep breath at the touch, then coughed. He suddenly felt rather vulnerable, standing in the doorway, and doubted Max would stay in hiding for long with a potential new friend there. Tom took a step back.

"Uh... you want to come in?"

Once inside, Tom thought about her original question. He shrugged and gave a confused frowned.

"I don't know... they just... haven't."

Seiko nodded and followed Tom in, with slightly less bounce than usual, she was a little worried of scaring Tom, or unsettling him more than he seemed to be.

Then she spotted the puppy and immediately dropped to her knees to give him a fuss.

"But what about Birthdays or maybe times you achieved things? Didn't your friends or anyone give you something for those?" Seiko was mildly horrified, Tom was fairly normal (given the circumstances) surely people cared about him enough to just give him something nice.

She coughed. "Well I hope you like the books anyway."

Once the two of them were in the room together, Max came running out, tiny ball of fluff that he was, with his little tail wagging so quickly his hind quarters moved with it.

Tom set the books down on his desk, and turned to look back at Seiko, slightly confused.

"Uh... my... I didn't have any friends before this, at least not ones who I spent any significant amount of time with. It was mostly just me and my dad, and... well... ummm..." Tom kind of trailed off and looked away.

Seiko scratched Max behind the ears and looked around Tom's room, she felt a little like she was in a superhero's cave, a superhero on a budget, but a superhero none the less. She supposed it was probably quite sensible in this situation for someone to have maps and that kind of thing. But even so it was fairly unusual.

"You didn't..." Seiko pulled an odd expression, resisting for what seemed the thousandth time to hug him. If it had been Kanaye she'd had just bearhugged him and had done with it, but she didn't know Tom well enough, and Kanaye was more of a touchy feel-y person.

"But Tom-san, surely people wanted to be friends with you?" she sounded incredulous, after all even really horrible people managed to have friends. And Tom was nice!

Seiko seemed awkward. He thought given the reactions given before, that maybe it was because he lacked a shirt. He looked around the room, finding a tight black t-shirt, and pulling it on. He looked back at Seiko.

"I.. uh... I guess that was my fault. I just... I haven't had a lot of people in my life, and the ones I did have... tended to go away. So for awhile I was... I thought it was pointless to get close to anyone knowing I'd eventually lose them. It kind of took the team pulling me out of paradise to make me realize that I was being kind of stupid."

The lack of shirt hadn't bothered her too much, but it was a little easier to look at him and not seem to be staring.

Seiko nodded and bit her lip, how was it all the people in this group come sometimes come across as so alone? She stroked Max and tried to seem a little less shocked. "It must have been lonely Tom-san, to not get close to people." she looked over at him with sympathy in her eyes. "I'm still not quite sure what to make of the group, they are good people and they save each other but..." she waved her hand trying to think of the right words.

"They don't all get on that well sometimes."

"I... I didn't realize what it was until... " Tom took a breath, and tried not to think about what had finally made him stop wanting to be alone.

"I didn't realize it for awhile....But, yeah, our friends are a varied bunch. The only thing they really have in common is... Paradise, so their beliefs, attitudes and general way of doing things clash."

Seiko didn't push him to explain what he meant about his loneliness, she didn't want to pry too much. Instead she smiled at his comment about their 'friends'.

"Yeah its been a bit...difficult to work them out, like what will and won't annoy them. But these guys, everyone is so different..." She smiled and stood up. "Everyone has different strengths though, so when things get bad it seems to work out alright in the end."

Tom dropped into the desk chair, and turned to face Seiko. Max had decided that their greeting was finished, and it was time to get down to some actual petting. He hopped up, and ran to the foot of the bed, then rolled over so Seiko could administer belly rubs.

"You really do see the bright side of everything don't you?" Tom's tone conveyed his disbelief at Seiko's optimism.

Seiko laughed at Max's antics and rubbed his tummy with a smile.

"Well its not like I'm unrealistic, but I used to be..." she tailed off trying to work out how to word what she was trying to explain. "I didn't cope with what life threw at me, so I'm having to change, to see the good to try to keep myself from being useless." she looked over at Tom. "Besides seeing the worst means you can miss out on so many things, I don't want to miss out. I don't know maybe that sounds stupid..."

"Well I admit that who you are now is a rather drastic change from who you were just a year ago." Tom rested a head on his hand, and looked at Seiko. He squinted just a bit and really thought, then finally met her gaze.

"I think I would respect someone who stood up for an unpopular idea more then I would some who tried to be something they aren't just because they feared what other people would say."

Seiko nodded in agreement to his first comment, "A year ago I wasn't worth knowing." she said bluntly. "I'm glad this didn't happen to me back then, because I'd probably have caused some terrible trouble." She held his gaze for a few moments.

"Even if an idea is unpopular doesn't mean it is wrong. I want to do the best for everyone, even if it means people think I'm a fool. Life is too short to worry about how you look."

"You mentioned." Tom nodded. He eyed the books on his desk, and reached out to put a hand on them. Then he looked at Seiko.

"My.. uh... " He pointed to one of the books in the stack. "I used to get that one read to me. I don't know how to thank you for these, they really mean a lot." He smiled just a bit and dropped then hand.

"So I've seen how you interact with people, what... else do you uh... do?"

Seiko smiled a slightly less manic smile than she did usually, for once looking a lot more like a young woman rather than a bouncy teen. "You gave me the knives, I had to thank you for that, they must be worth more than the books...I'm glad you like them though."

She tilted her head at his question and thought for a few moments. "Do? Well I study a lot and go to extra study sessions to make sure my grades don't fall and I get held back again. I see my other friends sometimes, and spend time with my Dad." she shifted a little at the mention of her father.

"He needs some extra help sometimes, he was in a crash and it left him a bit..." she looked something close to sad for a brief second. "He's really cool though!"

Tom had to look away, he felt liek Seiko was sharing something rather significant with him, and he wanted to dfo the same.

"Uhh... my... umm..." He took a big nervous breath. Max seemed to notice Tom was uncomfortable and sat upright looking at him.

"...my mom is in the hospital, she has been since I was really young,"

Seiko stood up and moved quietly over to Tom to put her hand on his shoulder for a brief moment, because she couldn't quite think of words that could explain how much she understood what that made you feel.

"Tom-san thats terrible." she said quietly. "My Dad was in hospital a long time after the accident, so whilst maybe it is different in a lot of ways...I can kind of understand."

Her urge to hug Tom had returned with a vengeance, but he'd probably be uncomfortable about it. So she stuck to standing next to him and trying to send him her compassion and sympathy telepathically.

Tom closed his eyes and looked away from her, he didn't seem to notice the hand on his shoulder.

"It's alright, really. I mean it happened when we lived in the US, and the got divorced shortly after, then we moved her. I haven't evfen seen her since then, so it's not like I really noticed she was gone." He spoke every word as if somehow it was a good thing.

Seiko tilted her head, his parents were divorced too? Just like her own parents, she bit her lip trying to repress or deny whatever sadness was welling up in her.

"My parents divorced as well, guess we have a lot of similarities." Seiko said quietly again, "You haven't seen?" Seiko took a moment to process all this.

"Wait, you used to live in the US?"

Tom nodded, and looked up at Seiko, who he realized was... very close.

"I..uh was born there. My family lived in New York until I was in about... middle school I think. When my mom got sick. My parents split up and we moved here. This is... I think were they met. Anywyas thst's I guess my life in a nutshell." Tom paused for a moment.

"Well I also got kicked out of the school they sent me to when we moved here, but you heard about that right?"

Seiko noticed the look, then noticed the closeness so for Tom's sake slipped back a little (hugging crisis averted) cause she was pretty sure her looming over him would make him uncomfortable, that fact in itself kind of impressed her. Most guys she knew would have been more than happy to have that view.

"New York?" Seiko's eyes widened. "Thats so cool!" She grinned. "I always wanted to go there!" But then her expression grew serious again, "I didn't hear about that, I mean I don't really listen to gossip so even if it was mentioned..."

"Oh umm.. " Tom dropped his arms into his lap, and his shoulders slumped.

"There were these two guys... they were doing things I disagreed with, and... I guess I thought there was no other way to deal with them. I told the teacher, and I tried to do it the right way, but because they were star basketball players, no one wanted to do anything. I ended up putting them in the hospital. " He sat up, and turned to look at Seiko again.

"I got expelled for starting fights, and then everyone in this school thought I was some kind of delinquent. I kind of just... let them. I figured then I could control my reputation. People are far more willing to believe something bad about someone then something good. Even if it's all lies."

Manned up at last!

Seiko listened to him quietly and stared down at him as he slumped for a moment, mental trauma be dammed she was going to hug him, she refused to listen to someone with this kind of life without comforting them properly. Even if they had been almost broken because of presents, the worry of inflicting more damage had held Seiko back from hugging him, and as always she was worried about giving the wrong idea. After all it seemed Tom knew about what she had been like. But dammit her compassion had hit critical.

Without much thought for where they were standing and sitting, she pulled Tom into what seemed to be half headlock half hug.

"But Tom-san, your intentions were what is important." she smiled and continuing to hold onto him in her tight and probably uncomfortable grip.

"Its very brave to stand up for what you believe." Seiko wasn't a fan of violence, but since being introduced to Paradise and what she could do, it was difficult to say anything about that really that wasn't hypocritical. Besides who was she to judge a situation she had not been witness to?

"A lot of people do want to believe the worst, I mean look at my past reputation. But it can change, people can begin to think well of you even if they used to dislike you."

Tom's whole body went rigid. He gripped the chair, and leaned back slightly, turning his head as he got to know Seiko way more then most of his teammates. He closed his eyes and tried to breathe normally while she wrapped her arms around his head, and yanked it against her torso.

He had to remind himself that this was not an attack, because putting Seiko on the ground would like have dampened the mood some what. He lifted his arms, and tried to figure out what to do with them, finally settling on sliding one arm behind her and patting hr back very gently. When he finally spoke he couldn't keep the discomfort or nervousness out of his voice.

"O-okay... Yukizaki-san..."

Seiko let Tom go, with some reluctance as she was fairly sure he hadn't exactly been comforted.

"Sorry its just..." she waved a hand. "What you said, the stuff you've had to experience its the kind of stuff I can understand a little. And either way it sounds like you've had a hard time. Its kind of difficult to try not to comfort someone when you hear things like that. Sorry if it...made you uncomfortable, I just don't like people feeling pain. I uh get too emotionally involved, not always the best thing really." Seiko smiled self-deprecatingly with a shrug.

The fact that Tom clearly wasn't too used to normal stuff like a friendly hug or presents was something that concerned Seiko. She did try to not get too involved with people's personal lives, but this wasn't something small like a couple splitting up or a rift over an argument about shoes. She sighed and rubbed her nose, she'd just have to try to be a friend to Tom and hope that helped, and possibly warn him before she grabbed him in a headlock hug again.

Tom closed his eyes and rolled his shoulders. He shook his head and waved a hand. He was still slightly uncomfortable from the hug. Not only the sudden physical contact, but he wasn't entirely sure he was proud of the way his body had reacted to her pulling him against her.

"It's... uh... alright Yukizaki-san. I'm sure most people have gone through just as much as I have, and come out fine. You're just as strong as I am, so uh... yeah." He looked down slightly. "I'm not... I don't entirely know how to handle it when people concern themselves with me."

She moved towards the door, aware she had a summer study session, after all even if it was the holidays she had to keep up to date with her work.
