proper family traditions
Who: Kozue, Kiriko, Renju, Masami, and Maybe Kou.
What: Visiting the Kondo Family Home
When: A few days after Obon
Where: Iwamizawa, a town about an hour outside of Iburi
Why: Elaborate trickery to get Kozue to the beach

Kozue had sent out text messages with the information—the date, the train, the will-call number they could give at the ticketing booth at Iburi Station to get the tickets she'd bought, and where to wait, once they got to Iwamizawa, so that she could come pick them up.

She'd even sent the information to Kou, and bought him a ticket; a sort of a gesture of goodwill, in case he decided to come and not be mad at her about the whole deception. (Or angry that simply I am her boyfriend wouldn't work on Kondo Fumiko. Not for something this big.)

Now she was waiting at the station, a few minutes shy of the appointed time; she and her brother were outside, on a bench, waiting. Kondo Shinjiro had gotten away with wearing a nice, dark-colored suit; he had added sunglasses that his grandmother had surely never seen, because he was cultivating some kind of cool American businessman image. Well, he was trying. At the moment, Kozue found the sunglasses a bit silly, but mostly because they weren't the right size for his face. He needed wider ones. She, herself, was more subject to familial duty--because she was younger, because she was the girl, because she was the one asking for a favor. For all of these reasons, Kozue had shown up at the station in a pale, swallow-and-cloud patterned yukata.

It was kind of stupid that she was worried already.

On the train, nearly there

Kou was becoming willing to go beyond boundaries; he was rubbing his hands and had remained quiet for most of the train ride, speaking only when spoken to. He had brought books that most had certainly never red, because he was getting to know that their tastes were not the same. He understood that was fine. He, personally, did not like it - but he liked to think because he was the man, the adult, that he was above such nonsense.

It was testing his metel, leaving Iburi like this. He'd even rung his father, and done so with what he imagined were funny looks; he expected some would know why he liked to ring home. Or that they were polite enough to be quiet.

He, himself, was wearing smart clothes; a pair of black trousers, a midnight blue shirt, and his black longcoat was resting in a neatly folded pile overhead.

Renju was in a seat not too far from Kou, dozing quietly as she always did during train rides. Obon had taken a bit more out of her emotionally than she'd like to admit; this was almost a rest in comparison. She didn't know Kozue's family, or much about them besides that they were Buddhist and her grandmother was strict, but they couldn't be as bad as... well, as the events of the last month and a half. Right?

But those were all thoughts that had crossed her mind earlier. For now, she slept, her legs crossed under the long dark pleated skirt she wore with a red jacket and white shirt in lieu of anything nicer or more traditional (her wardrobe was somewhat limited, something she had no particular interest at this point in rectifying).

Masami sat near Renju for the train ride. With Renju sleeping, Masami was reading a shoujo manga that she'd brought along. It probably wouldn't last until the ride was over, but it was something to do at least. Every once in a while she'd take a sip from her usual travel cup of tea and look out the window.

She knew that Kozue's grandmother was a very traditional type, so Masami was wearing a yukata with cherry blossom patterns, though in her bag she had a few sets of more ordinary casual clothes.
