WHO: Kanaye, Kozue
WHAT: Shopping~
WHERE: A mall. Junes, maybe?
WHEN: Before Kozue leaves.
WHY: Because Kanaye has a lot of money.

Kanaye tapped his feet. He was sitting on a wall on the outside of the mall, waiting for Kozue to come along. His wallet was full of money. It was Kanaye's dad's money, granted, but he had asked for it. And, technically, "It's for a girl I'm seeing!" is in fact the truth. Kozue is a girl, and he was seeing her. Just because "seeing her" also means "dating her" doesn't mean he doesn't see her. Normally, he'd pay out of his own pocket. He had gotten a part time job at a pound. He was just a desk clerk...thing, but a job was a job.

But he doubted Kozue would like the things he could buy her with his own money. And that's what parents are for, right? Giving you things that you use to make yourself more liked! It's an excellent job!

Besides, Kozue would probably need it. Kanaye still didn't think she wanted an omiai or whatever it was. It just sounded so...barbaric. Archaic. Pointless. Traditional. There was a difference between Kiriko and Kozue (for one, Kozue isn't a bitch,) but, to him, Kozue didn't seem like someone that would enjoy having her choices made for her. At the very least, she'd give her husband horns.

And how.

A few minutes late, Kozue came walking up to the store—she was walking at speed, not necessarily because she worried about leaving Kanaye waiting, but because she was excited about the shopping. Besides, she was pretty sure that Kanaye could handle a few minutes of waiting.

She was already wearing a pair of rather expensive heels, but this was a tasteful piece of irony as far she was was concerned; as she saw Kanaye, she waved and came up to the wall. "Hey! Waiting long?"

Kanaye smiled at her and shook his head. "Nope!" Only a half hour, and that's because he showed up early. "Not at all, Kozue-chan! How are you doing?"

He stood up and walked over to the door, opening it with a smile. "After you!" Kanaye bowed at her with a grin. The theatrics were fun, at least. And he didn't say any French this time! Kanaye considered this an improvement.

Kozue laughed—in a good mood, she was quite pleased by theatrics, and she was in a good mood at the moment. "I'm fine, thanks, although it's kind of warm out. I—ah, air conditioning," she sighed, stepping into the department store. She closed her eyes briefly, just to appreciate it.

"How are you?"

She was laughing! YAY LAUGHTER! Kanaye laughed as well. It always made him happy when he made other people happy. "Well, you'll have to get used to it for Okinawa!" He laughed again, stepping into the store.

"I'm fine. Kinda busy, but aren't we all? Work, friends, practicing, studying...the usual." He shrugged. "Why DO teachers assign us homework over summer, anyway? It's quite annoying."

Kozue shrugged, looking around briefly before glancing back to Kanaye: "I guess because they can get away with it. I don't really know, otherwise." She paused, mentally reviewing what he'd said: "Wait, work? That's not homework?"

What would he need a job for? His family was possibly the richest she knew of—and she knew a lot of really loaded people. She was from old money, herself, but these days the Kondo family had most of their income and investments from publishing and print sources. His family ran Satou Motors. There was a big difference.

"I mean, it's summer! It's time to relax!" Kanaye laughed happily for a moment before processing what she said after that.

His laughter shifted from happy to nervous. "Well, uh..." More sheepish laughing. "It's, yaknow." He shrugged. "Well, I don't wanna seem like I'm just relying on my parents for everything, yaknow? So, um, I got a job so I could pay for the essentials. Yaknow, room and board and food...I work at an animal shelter."

Kanaye smiled at her, his nervousness gone. "Don't worry, though! I'm using my dad's money to pay for this. You can buy as much as you want!" His happy laughter was back again. "As much as you want, whatever you want!"

"So you got a job to…" She blinked, and thought it over, and still could not come to a satisfactory conclusion. "To pay for things that would've been paid for anyway? That's…"

Crazy? Unnecessary? A whole lot of work for no payoff?

Kozue wasn't sure how to respond, so she went with, "Well, at least you'll have lots of extra money. So you work with animals? Like puppies?" She perked up at this thought, if for no reason other than having a keen interest in small, cute, and furry things.

More nervous laughter.

Happy that the subject was changed, he nodded. "Yeah! I mean, I'm just the receptionist so I don't look after the dogs or anything but I do get to see them. It's great, and I plan on having a dog of my own someday so it's not like I should just go in unprepared, right?"

Kanaye skipped around a bit. "So, Kozue-chan, where'll we start?" He asked.

She looked around the store, and, on a complete whim, simply pointed: "There! Accessories! Just… because, really!" Her smile grew, and she started walking. "I want a dog. What kind of dog do you want, senpai? A big one? A small one? What kind of dogs do they have at the shelter you work at?"

Question, question, question, question.

Kanaye smiled and started walking over to the accessories. "Of course, Kozue-san!" Kanaye pondered this question for a bit. "Well," he said, "I'm not sure. A big dog would be great to run around with, but a small dog would also be excellent. I've always wanted to pick a dog up and squeeze them and if it's too big..."

He shrugged. "Pretty much every dog imaginable, or at least I think so. Most of them don't have a home, so we do what we can."

"That's really sweet," Kozue said; she was already browsing, but browsing lightly, just reaching out to touch this or that thing that caught her eye. Nothing kept her attention for particularly long.

"So it pays well?"

"Thanks, Kozue-san!" Kanaye laughed. "You could come over any time you like to look at the animals!"

"Well, it pays enough. And I enjoy doing it. It's something, at least. I don't want to depend on my parents forever. Then they'd never let up about that job..." He sighed.

She nodded, but after a moment, tipped her head slightly, and her attention drifted away from the latest purse that she'd lifted and rejected. "Job?" She asked, although she had a nagging feeling she knew the answer. Satou Motors was a family controlled company, wasn't it?

"Yeah. Dad wants me to take over the company. He's mostly given up, but..." He sighed. "He's still trying, occasionally. One of the reasons I moved to the dorms is because I wanted to get away from that."

"Oh." She nodded. "So that's why you left home?" She tilted her head slightly—that made sense, she supposed, and she was impressed that Satou had followed through with leaving home. "'s pretty cool that it's working," she added. Certainly, the same wouldn't be true of her family, but Kozue liked to think that old age and a great deal of resentment and hate made a person very, very stubborn.

"Yeah, but..." Kanaye sighed. "Sometimes I wonder if I should just go along with it, get an omiai, and let him control my life. It'd be much easier, right? You wouldn't get hurt too much, you wouldn't have to think..."

"But no. It'd be running away, right? And I can't do that again."

"Your parents want to set you up in an omiai, too?" She gave a sympathetic shrug. "It's definitely easier, and you'd get to run a car company." She picked up a Trolley handbag and turned it around a few times. "That doesn't sound bad to me. I mean, that's pretty much what my brother is doing. Although advertising and magazines are way less glamorous."

A laugh. She wasn't going to bring up what she got; an omiai and not much else. "And it's nice not to have to worry about grades or a job after school or ending up thirty and unmarried." She kept spinning the bag. "This one is nice, don't you think?"

"Not really, but they have threatened it once or twice." Kanaye sighed. "I don't want to run a freaking car company, though. I don't know what I want to do but it's not run a car company."

"I guess so, but I don't wanna be stuck in an office. It's not like I'll go from "unemployed" to "CEO" that fast."

"Yeah, but...You might be content with that but I'm not. You're one of the few exceptions, but in my experience, rich girls are usually bitches." He nodded happily. "Oh, yes, that's quite nice!"

"Gee, thanks," she said, mocking a pout, though she wasn't genuinely offended. "I just… well, you're getting out from under your parents and that sounds like it's what you want, so that's great."

"As far as an office goes, can't sympathize with you there." She laughed, and opened the bag to look at the lining, before shutting it with a grimace. "Ew, why would they do that in a plaid? That's just hideous."

Kanaye laughed. "Sorry, Kozue-chan, but my experience with women hasn't really been the best, so..."

His face instantly going serious, Kanaye sighed. "It is, but...Kozue-chan, if you're not sure you want an omiai and be forced to a man you might not love, I'm behind you. And so is...probably, everyone else. So...don't feel like you have to, ok?"

"I don't know. I mean, plaid is a horrible color scheme. It'd be much better if it was orange, or lime green!" Kanaye nodded wisely.

"God forbid orange. Citrus isn't for clothing or accessories, it's for eating." She set the purse down carefully, her laughter a bit uncomfortable. "That's… it's not really fair for me to do what Kiriko-san did, put my family through the ringer like that, when there's no guarantee I wouldn't end up in a worse mess if I chose who I married, anyway, you know?"

"At least an arranged husband is contractually obligated to take care of me and spend money on me." Or, he'd better be. Kozue was planning on insisting on it. It was amusing, perhaps, that the biggest words she knew came out when she was talking about a) her spending money and b) how to get the most of it out of family and future family. "I guess it'd be worse if I cared a lot about love, but I'm just not… I don't, although I think it's kind of sweet that you do."

Sweet, yes. Naive, also. But weren't naive things meant to be sweet, too?

"But it's an awesome color! I mean, why do you think I wear it all the time!" Kanaye shook his head. "If you're afraid of something, you'll only end up worse off. And given your grandmother, I think she needs to be taken down a peg. Or a million."

"All husbands should do that. Not just arraigned ones." Kanaye sighed. "Thanks, but Kozue-san...what if you DO find someone you love? Or at least someone you find attractive? Would you cheat on your husband, if you didn't like him? Do you think that's much better?"

She sighed. "It's—"

She was having trouble with the concept of not cheating on Kou simply because it'd been so long, and they'd been dating less than a month. What would she do if she married someone like him, who seemed like he could care less for anything to do with sex?

"Well, I've got time to figure it out, it's not like this is a decision I need to make tomorrow. If it's a decision at all." She wasn't willing to admit that it was; that brought up problems. "As far as, well, cheating goes," she shrugged, not wanting to admit that she'd always been of the opinion that she would, one day; probably not a day very distant from her wedding, either. "It's a bridge to burn when you get to it, or whatever."

"...Yeah, but..." Kanaye shook his head. "Look, just to point things in your perspective, if you ever get found out cheating? You're gonna lose that money and protection. And the chances of you getting remarried are rather slim."

"I just want you to be happy but I can't...Nevermind." He started walking off. "Let's go look at something else."

"I—hey, it's just not…"

She sighed, and gave up for the moment, before starting off after Kanaye. She had to trot along, and ignore several interesting, shiny things, to get caught up with her much taller companion.

"Really, just, thanks." She smiled; "It's nice to hear. But you can really relax worrying about it for a while. I'm not going to get married next Tuesday or anything—if you want to launch a whole campaign for my future happiness against omiai, you should save your energy for later. After graduation, at least!" She smiled—joking to try and lighten a mood that she felt had become precariously somber.

"No, I guess not. But..." Kanaye shook his head. "I guess it's kind of pointless, isn't it? You have made your decision, it's folly to try and change it."

He looked around. "I'll do what I can, though! Look at anything you like!"

"If it's fun, folly isn't bad at all," she said with a laugh. "I happen to be an expert on that! And, okay. Hey, let's check out shoes! C'mon, this way," and she turned on her heels and started for the women's shoe section.

And attempted to put the whole business out of her mind; if she'd chosen it at all, to what extent there had been a decision, to what extent she had made any decision at all. Whether or not it was the right one. All of that, and all of it nasty. Luckily, shoes were great for getting rid of questions without answering them.

"I guess so..." Kanaye just followed, still thinking. He wasn't exactly one for morality and such, but Kanaye didn't very much like cheaters. And he definitely didn't want his friend to become one because...

Kanaye shook his head. Now was not the time.

Kozue made her way into the shoe section, falling slightly quiet as she looked around. The mood was… awkward, she decided, although she wasn't entirely sure where that had come from. The discussion about her future marriage, she supposed. But it was far away and shoes were right here.

"So…" she led off, after a minute or two of browsing heels. "Let's see. What kind of stuff is there to do at your beach house?"
