Skippin'
Who:  Reizo and Shiori and open?
What:  Detention skippin'
Where:  School
When:  Friday evening?
Why:  'Cuz he's a delinquent, did you really expect him to stay in detention?!

Reizo sat in the back of the class, arms folded over his chest and pencil hold at the eraser in his teeth. He wiggled it in his mouth, focused on the lead point as he precariously rocked to and fro on the hind legs of his seat. The pot-bellied middle-aged teacher sat at the front of the room, head bowed as he read through the newspaper on his desk and looking up from it only occasionally. The fluorescent lighting caught his balding cranium from time to time-- the hair product he used to keep his hair styled enough to (badly) distract from his bald spot gave said bald spot an unfortunate reflective quality.

Time drifted by miserably in the classroom. It was a warm day, made warmer by the fact that the classroom was relatively full of living, breathing heat machines and the fact that the air conditioning seemed to be broke. Adding to the heat was the almost maddening silence, interrupted only occasionally by a lonesome cough or the whisper of pages turning.

Until the teacher stood up abruptly, cast a critical eye around the room, and moseyed out. This particular teacher was well known for these long breaks, and it was why Reizo showed up in detention in the first place-- he’d be marked there, the teachers would quit griping for a little, and no one would do anything about him being out of the room when the guy watching them was gone for most of the detention himself.

Several more moments passed, murmurs and whispers filling the room until a chair scraped rudely across the ground and Reizo stood up, stretched languidly, and walked out of the room himself, amidst eye rolls and louder whispers about the delinquent. The whispers grew and grew until people were talking plainly-- apparently Reizo leaving the room meant it was safe to.

Watching him walk around the pool, Shiori snorted quietly to herself and looked back down at the water, her legs looking rather distorted in the moving water. She amused herself by continuing to kick at the water and watching Shirai-san walk around the pool.

Slowing in her idle kicking, she wondered what he was doing. Was he afraid of getting his skin wet or something? But then why would he bother going to a pool if that was the case? Maybe he was nervous? No, Shirai-san didn't seem like the kind who would get flustered easily. Was he waiting for someone then?

She looked over at him again, realizing he was coming closer before he stopped. She continued to watch him like the creep she was and continued wondering what he was doing. Jeez, he really was weird (said the pot to the kettle).

Looking away when he asked her how good she was at secrets, she shrugged lightly. He sounded kind of desperate...

"I don't have anyone to tell," she said. "I'm not really close enough with anyone that I'd really care to tell them someone else's secrets. Even under penalty of death."

“Tsk,” was his single response when he turned away from the girl. He folded his arms stubbornly across his chest and cocked his head in the way he normally did when he was considering something. Risk the spacey art girl starting up the yakuza rumors again, or broil for longer? The sun wouldn’t be going down for awhile yet, and today was blistering enough to make the boy wish for a freak hurricane. Well, vaguely, he didn’t want anything getting in the way of his outing tonight.

He looked back at the girl once more, the glare saying all it needed to, and meandered over to disappear into the door to the locker room. Moments passed, and thought Reizo was stretching it out in hopes that the girl would just up and leave, he did finally emerge in long swimming drunks. Sadly, despite the length of them, they were only meant to come down to the knee of the average Japanese man, so Reizo’s were hitched a little higher than his knees. More striking than this vaguely comical disadvantage of his height were abundance of light scars and bruising dotting his muscled torso, all well deserved tribute to the violent lifestyle he lived.

If the mild scarring and bruises were a tribute to his lifestyle, then the vibrant tebori tattoo covering up the majority of his lower back and visible a moment after he‘d slipped into the pool was a testament to both him and his supposed family. The beginnings of a large beast was evident, but given only its tail and furry hindquarters existed at the moment, just what sort it was not clear yet. Given the boy in question, however, it was not hard to figure out what would end up emblazoned over his broad back.

He disappeared beneath the water and emerged near Shiori, wiping his hair back out of his face and cocking an eyebrow at her.

“That’s a fine excuse and sob story you got there, Wakanata, and as much as I’d love to trust my comrade, I’d sure hate to start hearing rumors about a yakuza tattoo on me,” the smile showed off far too many teeth, but his tone was mild and bordering friendly.

“Not much of a swimmer?” he asked after letting the threat sink in.

Rather than watch Shirai-san disappear into the locker room, Shiori disregarded the threat of omgewgerms and leaned back until she was laying against the concrete floor. Arms folded behind her head, she stared up at the ceiling. Shirai-san certainly was an odd one. Why would he be concerned about her spilling some secret? Especially when he never said anything?

Closing her eyes, Shiori lulled into a half-asleep state. Though she heard the footsteps, she didn't sit up until Shirai-san was in the water. Were it anyone else, she probably wouldn't have done anything either - but because it was Shirai-san, she sat up. Not to admire his muscled body or devilish good looks, but because she assumed if she didn't wake up he'd splash her. Wet uniform was a big did not want.

Rather than feeling threatened by his, well, threat, Shiori instead smiled.

"Don't worry, seriously," she said. "I don't really care about you enough to say anything."

She paused.

"Oh, that sounds terrible, doesn't it?" she mused, looking back up at the ceiling. "I just mean that I won't say anything. Even if I did know what I wasn't supposed to say anything about."

At his other question, Shiori blinked and slowly slid back, easing her legs out of the water.

"Are you asking?" she asked, even as she stood up.

He stared up at the girl from the water, sunk in deep enough so only his nose and up were buoying out of it. The water was damned cool and relaxing, but the crazy girl he was talking to ignited another fire inside him. It was an odd feeling to be calmly floating in the cool, cool water, the subtle shifts in the water lapping at the tip of his nose, and be annoyed. He didn’t take kindly to her shrugging off his threats, and the death glare his eyes were locked in displayed it.

The water splashed as a well-muscled arm swung out and strong fingers curled in around one of the girls thin ankles. The grip was tight for a moment, bordering uncomfortable, but loosened after a smirk lit upon his lips; with much of his upper body sticking out of the water and the criss-cross of thin scars more noticeable, especially the one at the corner of his mouth turning his smirk into something dangerous, the threat of bodily harm seemed that much closer.

“It is a terrible thing to say to your comrade, Wakanata-chan,” he scolded, “We should really be looking out for each other.”

The grin he flashed her wasn’t full of the wild, explosive force that made it seem like he’d rip your throat out. It was calmer grin, full of dreadfully patient malice but just as filled with teeth as his others: a crocodile’s smile.

“I guess I am.” He said with an obviously fake bashfulness

He sunk back down fully into the water, long fingers almost caressing her ankle as he pulled his hand away, and regarded her neutrally with just his eyes sticking up out of the water. A moment later and he was submerged completely, and pushing off the wall on the start of a lap.

Suddenly, Shiori was reminded of Peter Pan. Or of the crocodile and Captain Hook, anyway. She could almost hear the ticktock and could almost imagine his eyeballs alternately popping out of his head as he loomed closer. Whatever fear she might have felt from his glare quickly evaporated at the mental image. If their school ever did a play, and by chance did Peter Pan, Shiori was so nominating Shirai-san for the role of the crocodile.

Much like her fear, her amusement evaporated when Shirai-san grabbed her ankle and once again she was mildly worried. He wouldn't tug her in or anything, would he? Rather than struggle, she waited until he let go before continuing to move back - though she paused to lean forward and pat his head.

"Aww, does that mean you care about me?" she asked, voice as sweet as her smile. "I'm touched, Shirai-kun!"

She finally stood and told him she'd "be back, then," and shuffled off to the girls' locker room to change into her school swimsuit. It was as she was finishing changing that she realized that perhaps she should have taken her bag with her, because there were some pictures she'd rather not have Shirai-san see. Like the ones she had drawn in the other world.

...then again, maybe Shirai-san would have liked to see those.

Finally emerging from the locker room amidst flashing neon lights and sudden pulsing techno music, Shiori began to walk over to the pool calmly before breaking into a run and jumping into the water. Breaking up through the water's surface, she pushed her hair back with a laugh.

"Ah, this feels way better!" she giggled, kicking so she was floating on her back.

The splash had roused him up and out of the water, a little angrily. He buoyed up to the top, leaning lazily on one of the dividing ropes intersecting the pool-- apparently the swim team had been at it today-- and regarded her silently, eyes glued on her as she backstroked through the cool water. He frowned when he realized he was admiring the way the water glistened off her bare legs, and disappeared back beneath the water again.

Under, he forced himself to the bottom and to calm down-- she’d been smarmy with him since they’d reached the pool, and even PATTED him on the head, and here he was reacting like a typical hormone-laden teenager. He was angry, that much was true, but seeing her in a bathing suit had regrettably cut away some of his undoubtedly righteous annoyance. Goddamned being a teenaged boy! He was acting like Kanaye or something.. Well, alright, he’d never be quite that bad, but the comparison was valid. The idea of it made him want to drown himself.

But he circled her almost predatorily in the water instead, mindful of the bobbing ropes used to make swimming lanes. Each round brought him closer, until he was an unnerving arms length away and observing her candidly. He fought to keep his eyes from her legs again, and when he heard his cell phone ringing on the edge of the pool he was almost relieved to get an excuse to quit focusing on her. He ducked beneath her in the water and emerged again on her other side, and hoisted himself up easily out of the water, uncaring now that his unfinished tattoo was on full display. He’d given her fair warning about keeping her mouth shut.

Once again, Shiori was ignorant to Shirai-san's actions. Though she heard - and felt - the movement of the waves, she continued floating on her back. It was nice to just lay in the water, but more importantly Shiori wanted to see how long she could do it for. Maybe she could set a record or something?

But, no, her legs began to sink and she reclined forward until she was using her arms and slowly kicking her legs to keep afloat. She sighed and turned, twisting in the water to watch Shirai-san circle around her. He kept switching sea animals, she thought to herself with a slight frown. Really, he needed to settle on one. He couldn't be a shark and a crocodile!

Though the mental image was kind of amusing. What would it be called? Shirairkodile?

She lowered herself into the water to keep from laughing aloud, emerging in time to see Shirai-san exit the pool. And to see his back.

His back, with the scars and bruises and tattoo. Her brain took a moment to process the information. And then another, just to process once again.

Scars and bruises and tattoos and his skin was marred and imperfect and it was so, so beautiful. Diving under the water to get to the edge of the pool faster, Shiori popped up and leaned up on the edge to stare at Shirai-san's ass tattoo.

It would be rude to ask him to come back when he was about to answer his phone, but Shiori could wait. And admire.

The phone jiggled ineffectually as it rung, the bass-heavy song loud enough to cause some minute movement, until Reizo leaned down and snatched it up. He flicked it open with a quiet click and studied the screen, and after a moment he brought it carefully an inch or two away from his wet ear and answered it. He stood with his back to the pool, head tilted to one side as he listened intently to whoever was on the other line. He glanced back over his shoulder once, caught her staring and cocked an eyebrow at her, before he grunting out a “Yeah” and flipping the phone closed.

He sit it on the bleachers this time, well away from any inadvertent splashes either one of them might produce, and turned to face the starry-eyed girl. He supposed it was fair, given the way he’d been staring at her legs, but it still made him a little uncomfortable to be openly ogled; he surely was not used to it. Maybe that was why she’d been so smarmy? He frowned, considering for a moment if she was a passive aggressive flirter, but he shook the thought away when he was back over to the edge of the pool and looking down at her.

“I’m flattered, really.” He rumbled, before hunkering down in front of her and peering into her face.

“Most people would have the decency to look away.”

Shiori didn't care if he caught her staring, and consequently thought she was weird or a pervert or a pedophile or whatever fun name he could think of. She was much, much more pleased that now she could see his chest and more of his flaws. There seemed to be even more on his front - a mirage of colors ranging from yellow to green to purple, the bruises overlapping and intersecting with more scars. She lowered down into the water, folding her arms on the edge of the pool and resting her head on them as she continued scrutinizing Shirai-san.

He made injuries into an art. It was fascinating, really.

Her gaze moved from his chest to his face when he finally hung up and strolled over, and rather than be embarrassed at his words Shiori instead grinned. She had nothing to be embarrassed about - she was just admiring rather unorthodox artwork on an equally unorthodox canvas.

She reached to lightly touch his bruises, eyes softening.

"It's pretty," she said quietly. "The bruises and the cuts, people would be ashamed of them and see them as flaws. But you know they're not, don't you? You're not embarrassed about them at all."

She moved to the side, hefting herself out slightly in an attempt to see his back. Water dripped from her hair onto her neck, the drops cascading down her shoulders and disappearing down the front of her swimsuit while others trailed down her arms and back.

"Turn around; I wanna see your tattoo," she ordered.

Reizo stared astounded at the shorter, much more diminutive girl, like a wolf who’d just howled out a warning to the innocent doe it’d marked, and instead of fleeing to give it sport or locking up in fear it had turned around and charged back, intent on fighting. It took a moment for him to stand up once she’d heaved herself up out of the pool, and for a brief moment he was sitting on his haunches with a face full of Shiori crotch.

He frowned down at her, but obediently turned around, expression still somewhere between dismayed and impressed at the spacey arts girl’s sudden authoritive growth. His broad shoulders rolled and he deflated a little, feeling more akin to a whipped puppy than the alpha male he thought himself to be. A moment rolled by, allowing the girl to take a long gander at the colorful and almost new tattoo, the larger, scarier boy’s shoulders slumped as he was made into something of a spectacle for his comrade.

He spun around a moment later, lips locked in a moue of distaste as he picked the small girl up, inadvertently (or not) copped a feel of one of her legs and quite literally tossed her into the pool. He stared at the large splash with no small amount of satisfaction and cocked his head, waiting for the girl to surface as the grimace melted away and into a hard frown.

“Are you fuckin’ stupid?” He snarled at the pool, either under the impression she could somehow hear him from inside the pool or just not caring enough to keep the roar inside.

Moving until she was sitting on the concrete floor as she had been earlier, Shiori placed a hand on Shirai-san's shoulder to push him forward gently in order to get a better view of his tattoo. Said hand then trailed down his back to trace the few scars before venturing further down to outline the tattoo. It really was beautiful, she thought to herself. Did he go out of town for it, she wondered.

About to ask, she instead let out a shriek in surprise as he suddenly spun around and dumped her back into the water. Having just heard the first three words of his shouted statement before plunging underneath the water, Shiori chilled underwater for a moment as she regained her bearings before kicking back up to the surface.

"I'm not fucking anyone!" she exclaimed, the swear word coming easily from her mouth and yet still sounding odd. "And what was that for, anyway?!"

She huffed, grabbing at his arm and attempting to tug him into the pool as well.

“What?!” He half-yelled, eyes going wide again. Fucking anyone? What in the world was wrong with this girl! He shuddered at the feel of her thin finger tracing over his back. Goddamn, didn’t that girl have any decency?! You don’t just do that sorta shit with someone, that’s.. that was way too intimate, dammit! He ran a hand over his forehead and through his hair, looking exasperated and more than a little unhappy about the situation. How had a relaxing pool visit turned into such a pain in the ass?

A weak tug on his arm and he was once again focused on the answer to that question. He stared nonplussed at her, eyes half-lidded in an unbelieving look, and gave his head a violent shake. He pressed his free hand to her forehead and pushed her back away from him and into the pool, letting out a sigh before he hopped into the pool himself and leaned his elbows up on the edge of it, regarding Shiori disdainfully.

“Do you make it a habit of doing this sort of thing? You always seemed so damned meek in the other world.”

Jeez, what was he so upset about? If he didn't want Shiori to see his tattoo, then why'd he turn around for her? Or go to the pool, period? Sure, her plans of attack might not have been the best but they were alternatives to him taking off his shirt and revealing things he didn't want her to see!

She pouted and, rather than falling back under the water at his shove, was instead pushed back. A small wave formed as a result, though it quickly dissipated. Pout turning into a sulk, she dunked herself down under water and rose back up, glaring at him sullenly as he slipped back in.

"A habit of doing what?" she asked. "And how can I be meek? I never say anything in the other world!"

Various expressions washed over his face, all one after the other, until patient anger settled in. He was then, just vaguely, afraid that if he spent much more time with the artist that his face would be locked in a permanent curious expression. It would be hard to intimidate anyone if his eyebrow was constantly quirked and.. He frowned down at his reflection in the water, and then looked accusingly up at Shiori. Was the bizarre girl somehow rubbing off on him?

“What? You’re.. that’s the reason I think you’re meek, idiot! You never speak up!” He croaked out exasperatedly, rubbing his forehead before he sunk shoulder-deep into the water and closed his eyes. Cowing this girl was going to be more difficult than perhaps even Ikeda.

Dog-paddling slightly closer to him, Shiori paused when he was within reach. Her lower lip remained jutted out in a childish pout as she glared at him sulkily. As if it were her fault! Everyone else seemed to fill the role of talking quite happily; she just decided she'd be better off documenting the experience.

Cough cough.

"You want me to talk more then?" she asked, moving closer to him and placing her hands on his shoulders. She smiled brightly, leaning closer as though to give him a hug. "You're so sweet~"

And then she shoved down in an attempt to dunk Shirai-san. And because something told her she was dead, and because she valued her life (though not that much, apparently), Shiori swam. She swam so far away.

Reizo frowned at Shiori, and surreptitiously withdrew from her, pressing himself closer to the wall and watching her warily. When her hands landed on his broad shoulders, his eyebrow twitched and he developed the look of a trapped animal. One who would gladly chew his own leg off to get away. First Misaki, and now this odd, so very very odd, upperclassmen of a girl. He looked ready to bolt.

Then nonplussed when she suddenly plunged up out of the water to gain leverage to dunk him. He obliged by ridding himself of any footing and wearily sinking down to the bottom of the pool. The quiet splash of her racing to get away was a comfort to him-- he felt a small urge to dart after her and give chase, maybe even catch up with her and .. Well, he couldn’t think of what he’d do then. Instead he popped back up out of the water and watched her morosely from across the pool.

“So are you always this big a flirt?”

"Whaaaaat?" she said, lurking warily on the other side of the pool. Who knew when he might decide to suddenly teleport or turn into Shiraikodile and attack? Best to be prepared, she decided, and so she kept her distance. Still, Shiori couldn't let him accuse her of being a flirt. She wasn't! She didn't even know how to flirt. She never talked to people unless she needed food or help; as a slacker artist, she found it was just easier that way. Not that it didn't get lonely sometimes, but Shiori would have plenty of time to make friends in Tokyo. Life in Iburi was just a temporary thing.

Moving opposite of Shirai, Shiori slumped into the water instead until her mouth was barely above the surface.

"I just.. you seem uneasy," she said, kicking up and moving to float on her back so she wouldn't have to look at him. "You're so aggressive and active at that other place and here you're grumpy and... it's weird." She decided. "It's just me here. And you said I was meek. What's there to be afraid of?"

Shirai watched her from across the water, eyes lidded in that familiar disbelieving expression he’d had plastered across his face all day. He made a noncommittal noise and went limp in the water, more relaxed now that the hyperactive terror was on the opposite end of the pool. He started at a sudden sharp rapping and cast a baleful eye towards the gym teacher rapping on the other side of the window. The teacher motioned urgently to his wristwatch, phone wedged between one meaty shoulder and his head. Reizo motioned back with one meaningful finger.

“I’m not uneasy,” he rumbled, or bubbled as he had sunk half his face down under the water again. “I’m not uneasy,” he started again, clearing his mouth of the chlorine diluted pool water and turning away from the teacher‘s window. “I’m just annoyed at someone in the immediate vicinity.” He leveled her with a meaningful look and finished with, “And you’re complaining about me being different? What about you?”

Turning when the gym teacher began tapping at the window, Shiori blinked and continued floating in the water uncertainly. He seemed to want them out, but - looking at Shirai - it appeared the punk wasn't going anywhere. Though the pool was nice and all, perhaps it was time to leave. Rolling with the idea, she ducked down under water and swam towards Shirai's side. Resurfacing, she stayed a safe distance from him.

"I never said I wasn't," Shiori said, heaving herself out of the pool rather than using the ladder. Frowning at the change in temperature (who would have known it'd be cooler outside of the water?), Shiori grabbed a fistful of her hair and squeezed to get the water out. Combing her fingers through it, she added, "And I'm not complaining either. I'm just saying."

She walked over to her bag and picked it up, slinging it over her shoulder before turning to offer Shirai a quick smile.

"I'll see you later, Shirai-kun," she said, turning and heading to the door. Her hand on the handle, she prepared to open it and then paused. Something wasn't right.

. . .

She turned, muttering a quick "shut up" as she went into the locker room to change out of the swimsuit and back into her uniform. After some time she emerged again, hair slightly drier but still damp.

Realizing Shirai was still there, she blushed. "I'll treat you to a topsicle if you don't say anything about it."

The thought never crossed her mind that she had dirt on him that she could spill if he said anything about her spaciness.

He watched her with a moodiness reserved for the heir of a yakuza empire, but odd on the face of such a violent delinquent. Petulance was not an alien emotion to the boy. Not at school, anyway. He turned to watch her heft herself up onto the edge of the pool. Guilt and annoyance lanced through him when he realized he was staring mostly at her backside; he sunk lower into the water, wilting with disappointment in himself.

It was short lived. He watched her make her way to the door, watched the way the water still beaded down her exposed skin with another stab of anger and a mental chiding to quit being like a certain blonde third year. He seemed unaware that he had moved to the edge of the pool closest to her, or was at least deluding himself that it was NOT an effort to get a better look at her.

A smirk settled on his lips, the scar on the side of it tugging it towards unattractive, and his eyes snapped up to her face. He looked simultaneously smug and knowing, and gave a simple shrug of his broad shoulders when she caught herself. The resulting laugh was natural, if a little mocking.

By the time she was back in the room he was coming out of it, glaring daggers at the door of the gym teacher’s office. His head snapped around to watch her, daggers turning to butter knives then melting into something a tad disappointed when his eyes snapped over her school uniform. A dark eyebrow rocketed upwards at the sudden offer, and he regarded the girl with the unbelieving stare that was undoubtedly quite common to her.

“A topsicle? Really?”

A moment passed, before the boy gave a solemn nod and brushed by her to tread the length of the pool and disappear inside the boy’s locker room. He returned promptly, hair just shy of sopping wet and school shirt dotted with some of the droplets of water still dripping down off of it. He opened the door after giving her a wary look.

“Are elementary school dates your specialty?” He mocked with a cant of his head, voice probing and a little sharp.

And so Shiori waited patiently for Shirai to come back out, amusing herself by playing a game on her cell phone. Not that she had to wait long or anything - Shirai seemed to have forgone toweling and just went into his uniform. Giggling to herself, for now that he was out of the water he looked more like a wet dog than anything, she waited for him to come closer.

"It was probably a good idea not to bother with drying," she mused as she shuffled after him to the door. "It's so hot out your hair would probably dry soon, won't it?"

Blinking when he opened the door, Shiori looked up at Shirai confusedly. What was that look for? Wasn't he supposed to be the punk unafraid of anything? Why was he looking at Shiori like she was about to shank him or jump him or something?

"Were you expecting more?" she asked with a raised eyebrow. "Soyokaze Touya is a little out of my price range right now, sorry. Topsicles are the best I can do."

If he really wanted something else, he could pay for it himself. She was just offering food - he didn't have to settle for just topsicles.

He blew a piece of wet, dangling hair out of his face temperamentally, tossed the girl an agitated look and walked out. He was immediately grateful that he hadn’t bothered drying off, because what water was still creeping down his face and torso acted as a fine buffer for the merciless rays of the sun. He could already feel it drying up, though. He glared balefully up into the sky, then quickly made his way to the first bit of encompassing shade he could find.

He wasn’t sure where exactly they were heading, but he meandered up the pathway without a second look back at the girl, fairly confident that she’d either catch up or flag off and leave him be. Either was fine with him. The only thing he could possibly hope for was that the heat made the hyper girl a little more bearable, sapped some of that pesky energy away.

Upon stepping outside, Shiori regretted drying off. She should have just gone out with wet hair, it seemed, but with her luck she would have caught a cold anyway. It seemed any time she was outside with wet hair she'd catch one, and she really did hate being sick.

Ah, well. Too late to go back to the pool now. All she could do now was hurry to the little grocery store that carried all of her favorite snacks - topsicles included - and cool off with one of those. And so rather than engage in small talk, Shiori pattered on quickly, pausing every so often so Shirai could catch up with her. She could feel sweat already gathering on her forehead, and she wrinkled her nose as she wiped it away. Urgh, it was so hot out!

Finally, she spotted the store and with a quiet "aha!" ran ahead into the store, uncaring if Shirai followed or not. Without bothering to look around the store as she normally would have, she went immediately to the frozen section and grabbed a single honeysuckle topsicle. Wasting no time, she went to buy the treat and opened it quickly.

Moving off to the side to wait for Shirai to come in - assuming he would, anyway - Shiori twirled the off-white topsicle in her hand as she looked for a side that wasn't covered in ice. Finding a side that satisfied her, she tentatively licked at it to determine how cold it was. Licking again with a longer stroke, she sighed happily; she loved honeysuckle topsicles almost as much as she loved spicy food. She put the tip in her mouth, sucking on it for a moment before looking up when she realized Shirai was there.

"Oh, right," she said, blinking in surprise. The few short moments she had been with Shirai, she had completely forgotten her promise to treat him to a topsicle. "Topsicles are this way."

She put her own back in her mouth and motioned for Shirai to follow her.

He followed behind the girl at a languid pace, reasoning that it was better to have the water dripping off of him in the sun than work up any unnecessary heat or sweat by matching the older girl’s pace. He moseyed along behind her, eyes cut against the high sun, wondering why anyone would be hurrying in such draining heat, and afterwards wondering why he even questioned Shiori’s thought process at all. It would surely only lead to headaches.

He lowered his head when they reached a little stretch of road flanked by trees, trees thankfully high enough to cut off most of the sun from reaching them. The road was almost completely in shade, except for the bits and pieces of light that cut through where it could, dappling the road in bits of sunlight. He came to a complete stop when they reached a perfect patch of shade and shifted from foot to foot, ignoring the impatient look Shiori was giving him.

The rest was short, and his pace was noticeably nippier when he started following her again. The sight of the shop or the pause seemed to recharge what batteries he had.

He sighed gratefully when the door to the shop jingled and they stepped inside the gloriously air conditioned store. Then he spent the next few minutes enraptured by the way Shiori ate her topsicle. He shouldn’t of been sweating again! Not with the air conditioner buzzing merrily away, ventilating the store.

He scratched his head and followed after the girl when she finally took notice of him again, frowning hard and hoping the heat on his face was just some errant sunray reflected off one of the windows of the store, and not a blush.

Reaching the part of the store where the topsicles were, Shiori gestured with her free hand, lips still wrapped around the topsicle. Letting Shirai look for a moment, Shiori moved it away from her just enough to be understood when she unnecessarily said, "It's all weird flavors, but they're all really good."

And then the topsicle was back in her mouth, and as she bit gently on the tip she finally began to look around the store. Next time she had money, she decided, she would stock up on snacks again. And she'd hide them properly this time instead of leaving them in the open.

Tongue pushing against the topsicle and then taking another small bite, she looked back over at Shirai. Twisting slightly to reach into her pocket, she pulled out her money and handed it to Shirai. A manly guy like that probably wouldn't want it to be obvious that a girl was treating him.

He scratched his chin, peering deep into the frosty window full of even frostier treats. He was avoiding looking at her, but was hoping she would not notice. Any more of that topsicle treatment and he was bound to bolt out of the store; it’s not every day you see an attractive upperclassman whom you also happen to fight monsters with suck so intently on something so, so replaceable in the mind of a fifteen year old boy. Or perhaps any male, really.

He swung open the door and plucked out one at random; the wrapper crinkled as he tore it open and popped the treat into his mouth and PURSED HIS LIPS AROUND THE SLICK SHAFT OF THE TOPSICLE, WORKING IT IDLY INTO THE WARM CAVERN OF HIS MOUTH, TONGUE SWIRLING OVER THE TAPERING EDGE AND A SATISFIED MURR ROLLING OUT OF HIS CHEST AS THE COLD SPREAD OVER HIS TONGUE AND DRIPPED DOWN HIS THROAT licked it.

He waved her hand away and wandered up to the counter, fishing out enough change to pay for it himself before tossing the wrapper into the trash and whisking out the door and back into the stifling heat. He frowned up at it, flicked his hand to get melted topsicle off of his fingers, and glared up at the sun again. The look he cast back inside was wistful for the AC, but he’d seen the clock inside. It was about time to go.

Blinking at him as he waved away her money, Shiori slowly pocketed it while sucking thoughtfully on the topsicle. She took another bite of it, face scrunching at the sudden cold before she resumed sucking on it. She really wanted to finish it before she left the store, or else all the juice would melt onto her fingers and make everything sticky.

Bracing herself, she took a large bite when she saw Shirai leaving and quickly scampered off after him, chewing as she went. Eyes watering from the cold, she swallowed.

"You're leaving?" she asked, raising a hand to get rid of the forming tears. Ugh, her mouth felt so cold compared to the heat outside. And-

A drop landed on her hand.

Her topsicle was already melting. Glowering at it, she licked at the drop and then at the bottom of the topsicle to stop it from melting before she resumed working from the top down.

“Yeah,” he answered curtly, accompanying it with a nod of his head and a small spray of melting topsicle drops. Damn, it was hot. Looked back at her, cocking his eyebrow again and noting how she was going to town on her own, trying to get it done before the sun consumed it first. “You know, you CAN go back into the store,” he muttered, eyes flicking to the clock showing through the windows of the store. Detention was already over.

“I got a meeting,” he supplied, leaving the and I need to get ready for it out of his statement. He eyed the brain freeze addled girl for a moment, pondering something, then shook his head. He was still wary of her spilling the secret of the tattoo, something that would invariably make the upcoming summer class trip hellacious if this heat kept up, but he figured she’d keep her mouth shut-- she was supposed to be his comrade, right? Granted, he didn’t consider any of these bozos real allies, just people he played a seriously dangerous real life game of beat ‘em up with, but there had to be some loyalty formed somewhere from looking out for each other.

“I’ll see you next detention, or something.” He added, starting to meander away from her. He made a beeline for the road they’d walked down before, and kneeled down to paw out a cigarette and light it before he started working his way out of sight.
