Who: Masami, Toru, and Yoshimi
What: Collective despair
Where: The Butterfly Room
When: At some point after Renju's dungeon and the drama explosion
Why: WE'RE IN DESPAIR~!

Masami swung her katana down with a shout. She was wearing a white gi and black hakama, which she normally wore for kendo, and her hair was tied back in a long ponytail. Beads of sweat glistened on her forehead, and her breathing was beginning to grow heavy, but she reset and swung again. And again. And again.

She had lost control during the fight with Renju's shadow, and she knew it. Had that been the only reason they'd won? Maybe the others had just written it off as her being caught up in the moment, but... Masami still felt like she shouldn't have lost it like that. If everyone knew what she was holding back... Well, she just needed to be extra careful to maintain control of herself. On top of that, Masami couldn't shake the nagging feeling that she wasn't strong enough after all, and needed to train. If she wasn't good for defeating shadows, what use was she at all?

She'd been training for at least a couple hours before someone else entered the butterfly room.

That someone happened to be Yoshimi, who had been sincerely hoping that this place was going to be deserted tonight. She made some attempt to compose herself once she spotted Masami, but she was stumbling too badly to hide the fact that she was completely, utterly, and totally blitzed in the middle of the week — too blitzed, in fact, to walk herself home, which was why she'd decided to sleep things off in the Butterfly Room.

"Ah, Sakuraba-san," she greeted, though it sounded a little slurred and none of her usual enthusiasm was was present. "I just need to sit down for a minute. My, uh..." The first year trailed off in the middle of whatever thought she'd been trying to verbalize. "I, uh. Couch," she managed, gracelessly flopping onto the aforementioned piece of furniture.

Masami sheathed her katana when Yoshimi entered the room. "...Oh, hello, Tachibana-san," she said. The butler hands, which had been cowering together in a corner(they apparently still remembered Masami attacking them in a rage during that battle in Maeko's area, and made a point of staying very very far away from Masami whenever she was training), moved over to Yoshimi and put a couple blankets over her.

Meanwhile, Masami set down her katana. "...Are you all right?" she asked as she turned back to face the first year.

Yoshimi huddled under the blankets, watching as the hands scurried off to fetch her a pair of the hugdolls.

"I'm okay," she lied, hoping that it sounded at least a little bit convincing. In truth, she felt like passing out and not waking up for at least a week, but any time when she was too high to remember her own way home was a time when she was too high to remember that last battle in Paradise in any great detail.

"Just tired lately," she mumbled, squinching her eyes closed and trying to bury her face in one of the couch cushions. Were these lights always so stupid and bright?

There was a squeaking of doors as a third person entered the room. Toru didn't exactly frequent the place, save for team meetings, but the circumstances proved to be an exception. Kanaye's moping had successfully turned Toru's dorm, normally his favorite place in the world, into the last place he wanted to be.

Right now, he just wanted somewhere to sleep. The pillow under one arm brought this message home, though it was contrasted by the laptop under the other. He'd have walked right over to the couch to sit, but soon enough noticed that he wasn't alone.

"O-oh, Tachibana-san, Sakuraba-senpai... my bad... I was just, er... I can't sleep, with how Kanaye-kun's behaving..." It didn't help that the events of Renju's dungeon were weighing more and more on his mind.

"I can just leave, if I'm in the way..."

"You don't look that good," Masami said to Yoshimi just before she heard Toru come in. She turned to him.

"Good evening, Ishinomori-san," she greeted with a slight bow, "It's no trouble, really. Make yourself at home. What happened with Satou-san?"

Masami sat down and started making some tea - Gyokuro again, because it was better at lower temperatures than other teas. "Oh, do either of you want any tea?"

Toru pulled a face as Masami inquired after Kanaye. "He's been mopey and emotional about Akuba-senpai... and not leaving the room. I can't concentrate on anything or even sleep with the way things are..." This was punctuated with a yawn, an extremely rare occurance for Toru.

He didn't make any motions to leave, though. Instead, he walked over to the pile of hugdolls and sat down, leaning against them. The laptop was still under his arm, and he seemed at least slightly willing to give Yoshimi and Masami attention. "I'll have a little tea, I guess... but, er... I guess Tachibana-san needs it more than I do, huh... is she okay?"

"Just tired," she insisted, forcing her eyes open again. It was half-true, in that she was tired — she was just also uncoordinated, red-eyed, and still slurring her words a little no matter how much she tried not to. "Tea sounds nice, thanks."

She perked up a little when the hands arrived with a pair of hugdolls for her to snuggle up to. "Do you want the couch, Ishinomori-kun? I don't mind moving."

When Masami finished making the tea, the two hands took a cup to each of the others. Meanwhile, Masami let her hair back down as she looked to Toru.

"I heard about... something happenining between Akuba-san and Satou-senpai, but I didn't know what. But know how emotional Satou-senpai gets... it must've been tough for you, Ishinomori-san."

Tea now in hand, Toru made himself comfortable among the hugdolls and opened up his laptop. A casual observer might have even mistaken him for a very large doll in the set at this point.

"Thanks, Yoshi- er, Tachibana-san, but it looks like you need the couch more than I do... I-I'm plenty comfortable here." Contemplatively, he sipped a bit at the tea. Not exactly his taste, but he appreciated it nonetheless.

"Akuba-senpai dumped him, a-and that's all I've bothered to listen for... Kanaye-kun's been really over-the-top, regardless. I could only take so much." He yawned again, and took a moment to type something on his laptop.

"It's weird... he'd always painted himself as a playboy, but he's really no good with relationships, huh?"

Yoshimi barely acknowledge the hands as they brought her tea over. Usually, she would have grinned and offered them an appreciative high-five — they were just so cute and helpful! — but, as it stood, she hadn't smiled in the better part of a week; as soon as her lips started to quirk upwards, it was like she was back in Paradise, feeling her face split open and...

She put her tea aside for the moment and retreated back under her pile of blankets. "...sorry, Sakuraba-san. I'm feeling sicker than I thought. Anyway, those two split up?" Thinking back to her last conversation with Kanaye, she wondered if bad sex was behind the breakup.

"I wonder if... er, nevermind." Stupid lowered inhibitions. Her brain to mouth filter was even less effective than usual. "Anyway, I hope he feels better soon. Especially so you can get your room back." Yoshimi had more sympathy for lovelorn fools when they didn't chase their roommates off.

Masami let out a quiet sigh as she listened to Toru. Sure, Kanaye was always a little over-the-top with his emotional responses, but so bad that he was basically chasing Toru out of their room?

"...Well, that explains it then," Masami said, "Yeah, hopefully everything gets resolved soon. If not, maybe you could try seeing if you could switch rooms?"

A look of concern crossed her face when she looked back at Yoshimi. "Do you need anything, Tachibana-san? You look kind of nauseous..."

Toru appeared to be fully focused on his laptop now, completely ignoring the tea and the two girls. After a few concentrated moments of clicking and typing, he gave a start and looked up.

"S-sorry! I didn't mean to... I, er... my situation hasn't left me with much time to play games or anything..." In his flustered state, he nearly slammed the computer shut and took a very quick drink of the tea, nearly spilling it on himself.

"Er, a-anyways... m-maybe I could switch rooms..." A silence followed, punctuated by a startled gasp and a pensive look. "T-the only other guy in the dorms that I know... i-is Sagaki-senpai..."

That didn't exactly bode well. He decided to shift his attention to Yoshimi. "Wow, Yoshimi... I mean, Tachibana-san... you really aren't looking so good. D-do you need cold medicine, maybe?

"...you can use my given name, if you want." On a better night, this statement would have been accompanied by Yoshimi grinning like a cat, imitating the we're friends, right? bit from USF7, and offering Toru the spare key to her apartment and a guaranteed place to crash for as long as Kanaye kept being a stupid downerface. Tellingly, she did none of these things, and instead looked just as distant as she had after that last battle in Paradise.

"It's not a cold. It's... you shouldn't feel sorry for me." She sighed and drew her knees up to her chest. Getting undeserved sympathy from her teammates was just making her feel worse.

"Besides, it's not like you have to worry about me." Deep breath. Best to get the announcement over with quickly, like ripping off a Sticky Band (a concept that Yoshimi, through her constant clumsiness-related injuries, had become quite with). "Because I'm, um, I-I'm quitting the investigation team! S-so we won't be teammates or anything."

"I could try to talk to Sagaki-senpai for you, Ishinomori-san. I think he would at least let you stay until all this blows over," Masami offered.

Masami was surprised at Yoshimi's announcement, but given the circumstances, she couldn't really fault her. "Tachibana-san... well, I can't say I blame you. What we went through last time was... really hard," began Masami.

She looked down at her tea. "I'm sorry, Tachibana-san. If I had been stronger, you wouldn't have had to deal with that. I feel like I can't really help the group with much besides defeating shadows, and... I guess it was a failure on my part that I wasn't strong enough to keep the situation from getting as bad as it did. That's why I've been training here so much since then..."

"I think we're all stuck in this together, but if you don't think you can keep going, then I won't make you risk your life in there against your will. It's tough in there, even for me. I just... well, you did really well in there last time, even in those tough conditions. It'd be nice to have someone as reliable as you in there though..."

Toru stood and walked over to the couch, then sat down, leaning against one side of it. The position was far better if he was going to have a conversation.

"S-sagaki-senpai..." A hint of trepidation crept into his tone. He wasn't over those warnings about Kazuya quite yet, but he was trying now, wasn't he? "I-I guess it'd be okay... he wouldn't mind me that much, would he?" It was better than a sulky Kanaye, at least.

Looking over his shoulder, Toru fixed Yoshimi with a serious look. "...you... Yoshimi-san... no. You're part of the team, w-whether you like it or not. It's not like there's anyone to take your place! You're a Persona-user. L-like it or not, we're a finite group. Every person counts..."

He then turned his face back away, giving an unfocused gaze towards the paintings on the wall. "'Sides, y-you could be the next victim. They've... we've, rather... all been Persona-users... It'll be safer for you to stay close to us. W-we can protect you.
