Who: Masami, Renju
What: The Obligatory Post-Dungeon Talk
Where: Renju's dorm
When: A day or two after Renju's dungeon
Why: 'Cause they're friends, or so Masami thought.

Something had been bothering Masami ever since Renju's dungeon. The other shadows... they had been pretty obvious about what caused them. This... hadn't been the case for Renju's. In addition, Renju's shadow had been the first time in Paradise that Masami hadn't felt almost completely confident in victory, and the first time that she had really lost a lot of her control. And on top of all that, there was one thing that the shadow had said... She needed answers.

It would also help to see how Renju was doing after the whole affair. Paradise never seemed to be easy on the ones who were taken in.

She knocked on the door to Renju's room in the dorm. "Are you there, Sonozaki-san?"

"I was wondering how you were doing, Sonozaki-san," Masami said, "I brought some tea if you want any..."

"It seems like that place is... pretty hard on the people who end up in there, so..."

"I've noticed that." A tired not-quite-a-smile flashed across Renju's face briefly. "I'd been wondering if it was just my constitution. I think tea would be helpful, thank you."

She opened the door a little more to admit Masami; the room was in much the same condition it had been in when she'd spoken to Keiichi, though the long-stale cookies from his first visit had been thrown away to discourage unwelcome visitors of the non-human variety.

"Pardon the intrusion, then," Masami said as she stepped into the room. From her bag, she produced a box of tea leaves(Gyokuro, the most expensive green tea Masami had), a cup, and her usual thermos of water.

She handed the now-full cup to Renju once she was done getting it ready. "So... how have you been? Are you feeling any better?"

The subtleties of tea were normally lost on Renju, whose sense of taste was rather poor for someone in the Cooking Club, but even she could tell that this was higher-quality than she was used to. She took a seat on her still-unmade bed to savor it, allowing Masami to take the now-vacant chair.

"Somewhat," she answered vaguely. "Is everyone else doing well? I've only spoken to a few people since." And Maeko had been wrapped in blankets in the Butterfly Room, Kiriko she'd barely spoken to, and Keiichi and Tom were... unusual cases.

Masami took a seat with a slight nod of thanks to Renju. "...Well, I talked to Aoi-san. She seems... shaken, but I think she's faring a little better than most. She was more worried about everyone else. The only other person I've talked to so far is Sagaki-senpai. He's... well, he needs to take better care of himself, honestly..."

"I'm OK I guess... Really, I'm more bothered by..." Masami started to say, but cut herself off. "Well, I'll be all right."

Before everything that had happened, Renju might have let that pass, with merely a suspicious look if anything. Given the subject at hand, however, and what she had seen there, it would be stupid not to at least inquire about it.

"Bothered by what?"

"It's..." Masami sighed. If even Misaki had noticed, there was no way Renju hadn't, but... "Umm... how much did you see when we... when we fought?"

Renju's eyes squeezed shut for a moment before she forced them open again. Watching, knowing that she and she alone was responsible for it, was bad enough; how much worse must it have been to suffer through it?

"I... observed it."

"Well then... you probably saw how I... got during the fight. I feel like I got... well, caught up in the moment I guess... and..." Masami trailed off, not sure what else to say.

Renju remembered, even if she wasn't entirely sure she wished she did. It had reminded her unpleasantly of that fight in Maeko's place, when Masami had become enraged by an enemy spell. It had been a little frightening, watching someone so cool and collected lose control like that... and she knew that her Shadow hadn't been capable of forcing that on others.

She sipped her tea, and was beginning to see why Masami liked having it at hand, even (especially) in Paradise. It was calming, distracting; it gave you time to compose your thoughts.

"It's... understandable," she finally answered cautiously, carefully resting the cup beside her in a conveniently-shaped whorl of the blankets. "It was a close call." She'd nearly killed them. "We don't often have those. And it was... more than Paradise typically inflicts..." Painfully.

"Well, I feel like... I shouldn't have let that happen," Masami began, "Like maybe if I were stronger, we wouldn't have been in such a close call. And that I probably could've handled myself better even in those circumstances." She took a long sip of her own tea, to calm herself for a moment.

"Your... umm, shadow... it said something that I kind of wanted to ask you about... if you don't mind."

Under most circumstances, Renju would've been happy to drop the subject. Unfortunately, the subject it was being dropped in favor of wasn't much better. Still, maybe it could help her work things out...

"What is it?"

"It said that you went into Paradise... on your own..." Masami wasn't really sure what else to say, so she sipped her tea, and waited to see how Renju would respond. Best to tread carefully, when dealing with matters of Paradise.

... ah. That.

Renju picked up the teacup again, her fingers tightening perhaps a little too firmly around it. She didn't meet Masami's eyes when she responded. "Yes. I did."

Masami had hoped that the shadow had just been lying, but now that its revelation was actually true, she really wasn't sure what to think anymore. "...If you don't mind... why would you do that...?" she asked cautiously.

Renju said nothing at first, but her nails were digging uncomfortably into the teacup, and her hair fell forward to hang over her face.

"It was... there was too much for me to deal with." She brought the cup up to her lips and took a long sip, nearly draining it. She barely tasted it. "At the time, I thought it was easier to just run from it."

Masami knew it probably wasn't a good idea to keep prying, but how could she stop now that she'd already brought it up herself? "Umm... too much to deal with...?" she began, "Oh... well, it's OK if you'd rather not talk about it, but if you need somebody to listen..."

She should, she knew. If not Masami, then at least someone. Tom, Kozue, Keiichi, one of the people she was actually beginning to trust a little. But Renju was stubborn, in a lot of ways she shouldn't be, and that was something that wasn't likely to change anytime soon.

"Thank you for the offer."
