Who: Tom, Kiriko
What: Talkings
Where: Butterfly Room
When: Midboss Break of Renju's Dungeon.
Why: ~INVESTIGATIONS~

If there was an upside to near-death experiences, it was private rooms that always seemed to bend to your whim. The Butterfly Room was always a good place to relax or concentrate on things - and right now, she was concentrating on several things at the exclusion of concentrating on their endangered teammate and the frozen hell they'd be returning to within the next 24 hours. Her favourite notebook was balanced over her knee, homework completed and put to the side, other sheets of paper spread out over the couch and a rather accomodating coffee table that had materialized from nowhere.

Tom stepped into the Butterfly room. He had a folder under one arm, and a whole package of tissues in his bag. He carefully placed the folder in front of Kiriko, and the stood there.

He felt like he should do something, but wasn't sure what. After a moment he bowed.

"So...ummm... before we start I..."

He looked away, and then back to her.

"I feel like I should apologize. I'm not sure for what specifically. Aside from my general... being a jerk that I did with everyone.
But I... guess I always got the feeling that you didn't like me. And... uh... "

Tom straightened up, and lowered his head some.

"Ikeda-san, I ask for your forgivness for any slights I may have brought against you."

Kiriko greeted Tom with a nod when he entered, only looking up again from her notebook when he started speaking.

She did not like the sound of this.

Sure enough, Tom's entrance was the fast train to awkwardsville. It was hard not to be sympathetic to dungeon victims, and resolutions for self-improvement were certainly admirable among those who desperately needed them, that much was true, but was this really necessary?

She sighed quietly, leaning back against the couch and doing all in her power to keep her hand from shooting up to her temple.

"Sagaki-san, please." She kept her tone as polite as possible, but exasperation seeped in nonetheless. "Sit down."

Tom nodded, and slipped into the chair. He put a hand up to his mouth and coughed. He still... felt bad for everything that had passed between them. It showed on his face, but only for a moment.

If Kiriko wanted to get down to business, then he should do what she asked.

"I...I got everything you asked for. It wasn't too difficult."

Nodding, she took the folder from him when it was offered, handing him back four slips of paper in return.

"This is why I called you here," she explained, flipping open the folder she'd just recieved and leafing through the notepages. "These four notes were delivered to Misaki-chan. I wanted you to take a look at them and tell me what you thought. I think it might have been done by someone within the group - which is why I got everyone's signatures and asked you to get me some homework pages for a more representative sample."

She lifted the folder, but was still looking at it, frowning at Yoshimi's terrible penmanship. Leafing through a few more pages, she withdrew one and passed it over to Tom.

"It's not exactly a dead ringer, but tell me what you think."

Tom took the papers, and looked them over.

"Huh... No doubt whoever it was took some steps to disguise their hand writing. "Watch out for shadows" does suggest someone in the group. Or someone who knows about Paradise.
I... my first guess would be Satou. The... flippant tone sounds like him. He certainly seems to dislike Aoi, and since he can't give her grief openly without upsetting Akuba-san and everyone else, he may think doing it through letters gives him the freedom to say whatever he wants.
And melodramatic over the top sentiments are is specialty."

Tom frowned.

"But this... seems like it's too much even for him."

Tom let out a breath.

"If it's not... maybe it's our enemies trying to turn us against each other. Or that blue haired kid from the other school. I still think he was responsible for the fake letter I got. And Satou was proclaiming that Aoi trusted him, so this might be a revenge attempt to frame Satou and turn them against each other.

At least those would be any ideas off the top of my head."

She watched him appraisingly over the top of the folder, waiting for the answer she was seeking but responding visibly to none of his analysis.

"Don't forget the part that says 'I know everything about you.' And someone in the group would know, having been to her Paradise."

She frowned and shut the folder, setting it to the side.

"Honestly, I think it's Satou. How could someone frame him without knowing about Paradise? That kind of thing can't just be a coincidence - and right when they were fighting with eachother, too? No."

She shook her head, then pointed to the paper she handed to him.

"That's a piece of Satou's homework, right? Compare the handwriting and tell me what you think. I can sort of see a resemblance, but I figured you probably had more experience with this kind of weird-o stuff than me.

Tom looked between the two letters.

"You know I had thought about trying to get on the good side of a handwriting expert once. It's not so much the handwriting that sound right, but the tone.
It does seem to make the most sense. Still..."

Tom sighed.

"If it is, then Satou has even more issues then I would have originally figured for him. And things seem to be getting worse. It might be in our best interest to keep an eye on him. He's a very likely target for Paradise."

If she had glasses she would be peering skeptically over them, but due to the lack of glasses, she was mostly just peering skeptically over air.

"Our whole team is a target for Paradise. They're after us one by one. Predicting whose next is helpful but I'm sure it will happen sooner or later."

She frowned. "... What to do about it, though. If we confront him, won't he just deny it?"

"Well, the killer doesn't seem to repeat his attacks. Even if we can't prevent any further attacks, we should at least try and figure out his MO. We can't stop him until we start anticipating him."

At the suggestion regarding Kanaye, Tom shrugged.

"Perhaps give him an out that allows him to still save face?"

Tom leaned back.

"Maybe show him a letter and say it was found. Give him the chance to come clean in private?

If he cops to it than there we go, and if no, then... well we gave him a chance.

Though obviously there is still the chance that he is innocent. So further investigation..."

Tom had to stop for a moment and cover his mouth coughing again.

"...Sorry. Further investigation might be needed."

None of those options appealed to Kiriko. Innocent? That seemed very unlikely. Save face? The only way he should be allowed to do that was with a public apology, or something. He deserved to have his name dragged out to the rest of the group, at least.

She said none of this, instead folding her arms over her chest and thinking.

"How about..." she lifted a finger to her chin. "We call Akuba-san and ask what she thinks of the situation? She knows both parties and both sides of the fight better than anybody, right?"

Tom raised an eyebrow.

"Which, if he's guilty would likely cause the situation to blow up in the faces of all parties."

Tom leaned back, and thought about it. He tapped his chin.

"I don't know about this plan. If Satou is responsible, then he should have to face the consequences. And Akuba should be told. But I feel unsettled by the idea of using her unknowingly to force a confrontation."

"Who said anything about unknowingly?" She unfolded her arms, pulling her bag into her lap and digging in it for her cell.

"We just call her here and have her take a look at the evidence, then we ask her opinion. It's simple, and it won't force a confrontation unless one needs to be forced. She has her loyalties to both, after all."

She flipped open the phone, but waited for any further objections before dialing.

Tom didn't get a chance to respond, at least not before he started coughing again.

"That would technically be using her unknowingly. Unless you intend to inform her that we suspect her boyfriend. We're setting her up to implicate him."

Tom shrugged.

"Not that that's a bad thing. We would want her assessment to be objective. I just..."

Tom shifted slightly in his chair, and cast his eyes downward.

"...I just like to make sure I understand all the aspects of a situation. Go ahead and call her it's the best idea."

"I do intend to inform her." She snapped. "Didn't I just say that?" Well, not in so many words.

Either way, Kiriko was dialing now. She lifted the phone to her ear and waited, glancing back at Tom while it rang.

"We'll tell her right after she has a look."

Tom raised an eyebrow and nodded.

"That's... probably the best way to handle it. I would compliment you on a good idea but you seem to be in the habit of coming up with them."
