Who: Misaki, Kozue
What: Happen passing while both are shopping
Where: Town
When: After school
Why: CAKE!!!!

Misaki was actually feeling better for once. Her normal skip was back and she was wandering around town after school looking for a new hair peice. Thoughts of the past few days were difting to the back of her mind. She was simply in a good mood and wanted to have some fun while she had the chance.

Taking a turn she found herself on a block that had, not one, not two, not three, but six shoe shops. She paused wondering why you would need so many shoes on the block, but that wasn't saying much. Walking down the street she started to look at the windows and soon spotted a familar face trying on a pair of designer heels.

Heading inside Misaki walked over to Kozue and sat down, "Afternoon Kozue-chan? Going to a party or something? Those look really expensive, but really pretty."

Kozue had been standing in front of a mirror, looking down at the heels. They were leather, designer, and a pale sort of brown, with the embellishments that were just becoming popular—a pair a lot like them had been in one of the 2013 pre-fall collections. They were gorgeous. So what if she'd gotten several pairs of shoes for her birthday, just last week? Well, she could get one more pair. She hoped.

And these would match beautifully with one of the outfits that Kanaye had given her.

She glanced up when she heard her name: "Misaki-chan! Hey." She smiled politely. "Oh, I'm just looking right now. Are you shopping here, too?"

Misaki looked at the shoes and nearly fell over. One pair could get her three reams of fabric. She slowly shook her head, "I ah...can't afford such things. They're very pretty though. And I was just walking around town. Are you shopping for a party?"

She glanced around at the people that were stareing at her and wondered if it was because she didn't fit in, or if it was the hair. Regardless she fixed her denim skirt, with delicate laceing on the edges as she crossed her legs to watch Kozue try on the shoes.

She shook her head. "No, my brother couldn't find a birthday gift for me, so he said he'd cover my choice of one thing, cost no objective." She smiled--she couldn't help being pleased by it, by having such nice things. "Since Grandfather and Grandmother raised his allowance because his scores on his latest exams were so good, he has money to spare." She beamed, proud of him, proud of herself for being related to him; "He was top of his whole class, apparently, on two different subjects."

She turned a little in the mirror, trying to look at how the shoes made her butt look. The answer was very super cute. In her opinion, at least. "Hey, did you mother ever decide if she was actually going to try to get an omiai with him out of my Grandmother?"

"You're brother must be very awesome. I remember seeing him at Kou-sempai's resturant. He was very nice, if I remember right. How is he doing?" Misaki asked kindly and thought about her own money issues. "Wow that's amazing. I wish I could get better in school, but never been any good at it. You're brother must be very proud of his scores."

"She probably is still. She hasn't spoken to me since I got an email from her about my test scores from the exams saying that 'Well at least you improved some what, though your lack of wanting to excell is rather undignified if embaressing to your family. Please make sure that you don't reveal your stupidity too much to the outside world, lest they think that the Chairman of the Science department has a child with a grade score under 4.0.'" Misaki waved her hand some and chuckled, "You're brother would probably get annoyed with me very fast. She expects me to marry since, well you know, not going to be a doctor, matmatician or a scientest. Whatever eles in the world is there to be but those three."

Kozue must have begun to study smiling-fu with Toshi or something. Her response to what Misaki said was a smile that looked almost entirely happy, and almost entirely honest. "Well, getting married is a really admirable goal. You can raise a family, and support them, right? That's a great thing to do."

She looked down at her shoes, still smiling. "Shinjiro-niichan is doing really well—he's happy, except when Grandmother brings up marriage, of course. He doesn't feel very… charitably… about it. Hey, what do you think, are these flattering?" She turned her ankle out and showed Misaki the shoes properly.

Misaki paused and was all to well at reading such smiled, "I guess so. But what good is getting married if you're not going to be happy right?"

She laughed some at this, "Then why doesn't he just tell your grandmother that he wants to marry when he's ready for it?" Misaki got up and crouched down some. She paused and tilted her head, "They look good on you, though I think a bronze color would bring out your ankle more."

"Oh, that's a good idea," Kozue said, and started looking around for a salesperson; "Excuse me! Do you have these in bronze?"

While the shop girl scurried to find the requests from someone who she considered a rich-and-spendthrift client (and it was true, too), Kozue turned back to Misaki. "I think he'll be happy," Kozue disagreed. "And between marrying and being a little unhappy, and displeasing Grandmother and being miserable forever, which one sounds worse to you? I know which one I'm—I'd pick."

"And try to get it in a wine color too, it'll bring out the highlights in your hair when you pair it with a darker colored dress." Misaki pointed out calmly. She took a moment to think and watched the girls scurry about. "You know it might be fun to actually make my own shoes, buy a base and find fabric and such to turn it into something different."

She took a minute to think about this then shook her head, "Well to me what would be worse, having my grandmother upset at me but being with someone who loved me regardless of where I stood in life. Or worrying all the time that the person I was with was going to cheat on me and leave me when I started to loose money."

Misaki looked at her, "I think I would suffer my grandmother's rage if I was happy with the person I loved."

"Wouldn't that require having someone I loved, first?" Kozue fired back, perhaps a bit too quickly. She was still looking down at her shoes, imagining them in wine red instead of brown; they'd be even prettier than bronze. But would they still match the dress from Kanaye? Hrm. She'd have to check.

"It seems like I'd be risking a lifetime of security, being taken good care of, for falling in love, which might not even happen." She twisted her ankle around, slightly, still admiring. The thing about being cheated on wasn't worth mentioning. Especially since, who knows if she wouldn't be the one cheating, five or ten years down the line? She certainly hadn't ruled the possibility out.

"Well yes, but wouldn't it be nicer to be in love with someone then just to marry because someone told you to marry that person? What if they turn out to be totally controlling and won't let you do anything?" Misaki rebutted. She eyed the shoes some and then took out her hair clip and placed it against the heel, "I don't know why but I can see a very fine embroidered gold snake on this shoe making it pop more."

Misaki paused some and thought, "You can make your own security. I mean what if the person left you and took their money with them, then you really would be in trouble wouldn't you?"

Kozue sighed. "My family has enough money to support me—and we'd sign a prenuptial agreement, obviously, so that if my husband runs off—" which he wouldn't do, really "—I would be set for life."

At least, she figured that was the way it worked; or she figured that her Grandmother would set it up that way. "And I'd still rather marry someone my grandmother chose than risk being alone for my whole life. And... a snake? Hey, that's kind of cool."

"Ah...what's...what's a prenuptual agreement? But do you want them supporting you all the time?" Misaki asked curiously.

"That's kind of sad in a way though. I mean can you really trust your grandmother's judgement to know what you would see in a man. What if she picked some really really old guy that wanted you to give him sponge baths and such." Misaki said thinking of the drama she had seen a few months before about a woman that was roped into a really bad marriage and wound up killing her husband to get out of it. She went over to her sketch book and started to draw a copy of the shoe.

"By the way, how are you and...who are you going out with again?"

Kozue prickled slightly—her shoulders tensed. Who was Misaki to say she was sad? "Well, Misaki-chan, I get a vote, too. Modern omiai aren't some crazy ancient tradition where I get sold to an evil samurai lord and can't do anything. There are rules." Both social rules, and Kozue's grandmother's own rules. "Like, she'd never attach me to someone that much older than I was, or someone she thought would treat me poorly. And like I said, if I really dislike someone, I can tell her that and she takes it into consideration."

"And I'm not seeing anyone right now. I'm playing the… is it market, or field? I don't remember. Nobody steady." She looked up as the salesgirl hustled over with the same pair of shoes in a bronze/gold color. "Thanks," she said with a smile and a quick bow, before coming to sit down and change shoes.

"And a pre-nup is where you sign a contract before getting married, saying what will happen to everyone's property if the marriage breaks up. And a lot of the time, you can make it say, if one person cheats, they get a lot less when it ends. If we would choose to end it."

That thought brought a sour frown to her face; ew, she'd never want to be a divorcée.

"I...I'm only saying that because it seems a bit, I don't know, un romantic to have someone choose your life for you. I guess it's not like picking a dress in a store, you wouldn't want to wear something that's not good looking on you." Misaki babbled trying to form her thoughts carefully. She wasn't sure what it was but the whole situation to her seemed sad. "You...You're really an amazing girl Kozue-chan. You could probably get any guy you really wanted honestly. No wonder Keiichi-kun fell for you. I mean, you're really determined and strong. So, I guess a part of me hopes that you find someone you love a lot, that's all."

"Field, I think." Misaki said and watched her try on the shoes. "Oh, I see, I guess that would be a good thing for my brother to have. He used to go out with a lot of girls." She paused, "You met my brother right?" She reached into her bag and dug out a family picture of her prior to getting her contacts, her eyes were brown in the shot. "See he's the one in the tank top and jeans and the hawaiian shirt. He was trying to be like Bradly Jolie in that outfit."

She finished putting on the second pair of shoes, and looked over at Misaki's photograph: she made a few polite noises of approval, generic but well-meaning. And then she caught sight of something.

"Hey, wait, Misaki-chan, your eyes. In this photo, they're..." She looked up, just confirming that Misaki had, indeed, vibrant blue eyes a few shades darker than her own. And she did. "Brown. What's up with that?"

A hypocritical question, coming from Kozue who faked having brown eyes; but a great topic changer, too.

"Oh that. Um...well as you can see my sisters all have brown eyes, and so does my mom and dad, Tomako and Hikaru got rare things that gave them lighter colored eyes, I think it came from my dads side. But Yeah, I wear contacts to make my eyes blue like Tomako's." She paused. "I guess it's just that I never really liked my brown eyes all that much. They made me look like a younger version of my sisters."

She shrugged and she looked at Kozue, "Why do you ask?"

Kozue stared—and part of her face moved almost like a twitch. Abruptly and in a way that suggested she'd no control over it. "You wear contacts to make your eyes blue?"

It made sense, since obviously Misaki hadn't been born with cotton-candy pink hair, either, but Kozue hadn't ever thought too much about it before now.

Why did she ask? Well, Kozue wasn't going to go with the truth, that was for sure. Oh, because I hate my eyes and they're just that color, so I can't understand why you'd voluntarily put yourself through that was… wrong. Not going to happen. "I'm just surprised. Nobody gives you trouble about that?"

"Well, yes. I just...my eyes are this relly dull color and I never liked them very much. I mean on other people brown looks nice, they just look really bad on me." Misaki explained thoughtfully, then shook her head, "No they just assume that I'm trying to look like a charcter from an anime, or that I'm being silly. I mean some times I get weird looks, but then I guess they see the hair and figure 'Oh silly visual kei wanna be.' "

Kozue nodded; in another situation, her reaction probably would have been sympathy. As it was, it was a terse, almost angry sort of self-pity. She did a good job of masking all but the slight tension, though. "Oh. I'm sure your natural eyes are very nice."

She sat down again, and started taking off the pair of shoes she'd just tried on.

"Not really hoestly. They're this silly mouse brown that really looks really really dull," Misaki explained and looked around, then pointed at a pair of 'sensable' brown shoes. "Like that color there."

Misaki watched her, "Are you going to get those then?"

"I don't think so," Kozue said, picking one up and looking at it. She spun it slowly by the strap—"I'm thinking I should shop around a little more, to get the best bang for my buck, you know?"

How Misaki could object to having normal eyes, Kozue couldn't conceive of. She looked down, feeling terribly conscious of her own contact-colored eyes. "I'm not going to take these now," she called out, "but I might come back."

"Hey do you want to checkout a few more stores?" Misaki asked cheefully as she got up and nodded, "You know there are some awesome thrift shops that have really cool old fashioned shoes that look really interesting."
