Who: Misaki, Maeko
What: Discussion
Where: Dorm room
When: After exams
Why: I was envious of Bel and Alice's girly threads.

There were two desks in the dorm room, each facing the wall. Maeko had claimed one for herself when they first moved in and in the month or so that followed she had slowly built what seemed to be a fortress made of clutter. It looked something like a puzzle, everything was organized so carefully and the desk was so very full that if even one thing was out of place the whole set up would be in grave danger of collapsing upon itself.

This was force of habit more than anything. The desk drawers were functional but unused despite the fact that they would probably make the desk area a lot less dangerous. It would become a little safer once she cleared her revision material away, maybe.

Maeko sat in the centre of this mess with her back to Misaki, clicking away madly. She had been there for the last hour or so, with a look on her face that communicated very, very effectively that she was working on something and it would be a bad idea to distract her.

And then, as if she was intentionally trying to bring the rediculousness of the whole situation to a peak, she sent a message to Misaki. Misaki, who was in the same room as her. And who would have to look for her phone.

[Hey, look at this.]

She stood up from her chair and stretched, moving to the side to allow Misaki to see the screen.

Misaki's desk was just the opposite of Maeko's. In the opposing corner it was decorated in various items that she felt were astetically pleasing to her along with funtional items that helped her stay as much in order as she possibly could. There was a cork board for all her notes and a long List that was there that read.

Things I need to do before I turn 17.

1. Make up with Maeko chan and have a best friend.
2. Go out on a real date with Keiichi kun.
3. Convince my mother that Fashion is worth going into.
4. Find out who's hurting everyone.
5. Get into the top 25 in my class.

Along with this were various other items. Like a case for her sewing items, one for her pens, a basket with fabrics and threads. The drawers had paper, tools and other various objects that she used. Pictures dotted the exterior, an a pink lamp gave it light. There was also a computer there too and a tablet for drawing.

Misaki was in the middle of putting the last stiches on the new uniforms for the Cheerleading club when she got the buzz and turned around to look. She thought it was odd that Maeko chose to text her rather then talk but she wasn't about to argue. Getting up, with the skirt in hand, she never stopped working once she had a project to finish, Misaki glanced at the screen and blinked.

"Maeko-chan, what is it?"

If there was one habit that Maeko would never be able to break, it was pushing her way into other people's business the second she'd decided she cared about them even a little. About twenty different windows were open on the screen, each of them information about a different university course. All were textile-related, though the context differed from window to window. Fashion and costume were the most prominent ones, though there were also some relating more to product design. There were a few about fashion and the humanities, costume design across the world and throughout history. A few of the windows were unrelated to the course but instead about booking a place on an open day to visit the institutions.

"There's more than this." Maeko said, rubbing her eyes after staring at the screen a little too long. "But these are the schools whose students did best."

She stretched again and turned back to the screen, smiling.

"I think it might be a lot easier to convince your mother if you take initiative and work out for sure what you want to do. If you can tell her for sure that you know what you're aiming for and you're building toward it she might be more willing to believe that you're serious about all this."

Misaki's eyes went wide and she hugged Maeko. "This is amazing. I could never find any of this stuff on my own. Thank you Thank you Maeko-chan! You're the bestest ever!"

She grinned happily as she asked, "So which look the best honestly? I don't know even where to start."

It was very rare for Maeko to agree that she was the bestest ever. It might even have been a first. But she was proud that she'd been able to make Misaki so happy and it would be a good thing to focus on while they couldn't focus on the club. So she grinned and nodded, returning the hug.

She motionned to the screen again. "I can print information on the induvidual courses out for you to read later, if you like. I'm not quite sure what they're about, there's a lot there that I don't understand because I don't know much about the subjects..."

She tugged at her fringe, irritated briefly at herself for finding something she couldn't help much with, then managed to get back on track.

"These are the best schools results-wise. They'll probably impress your mother more. But since you'd be living in the area they're in too then that maybe shouldn't be all you think about. Would you want to be in a bigger city than Iburi or a smaller city?"

Misaki nodded happily. "Yes, and I can help you understand the terms and such so you can help me figure out the best one okay?"

Misaki paused, "Um...well to be honest. I'd...I'd like to go to a college with you Maeko-chan."

Maeko was about to say that that might not be such a good idea but stopped herself. It wasn't like she had anything she particularly wanted to do anyway. Part of her started yelling about falling back into old habits and needing to change but she shut it up with more efficiency than she did much else.

"Well, I'd be okay pretty much anywhere if I could get in with my grades." Maeko said, thinking. "And I've not decided what I want to study. If it's somewhere I can get in you I think I should be able to go with you wherever. And if not I can always come visit you on the train. It's more important that you can go to a place that you'll like."

She looked over the open windows on the screen. "The places with the best results tend to be in the big cities. And the cities have more museums and a wider range of culture to get inspiration from, I guess. Would you be okay in such a crowded place, though?"

Misaki smiled some then sighed and put her arms around Maeko grinning. "I don't know. I just know that, right now, I want to stay close to you and the others. You...Keiichi-kun, Kirkio-chan...well you all feel like family to me. And I know sooner or later you're going to go to a different school but...but I'd like to be in a place where I could see you."

Misaki grinned, "I don't know if a city is right for me though. I mean...I think of my sister and she's okay in that place but...I'm not sure if I would be okay there."

"Maeko-chan, do you think that I really have a shot at this?" She sighed some resting her head on Maeko's shoulder.

Maeko shrugged. "It'll happen, though. People move away from each other like that. It's more than two years yet, though, and even then you'll be able to call and stuff. It's not something you should dread."

She patted Misaki's head, smiling.

"If you don't want to go to a big city there's no reason that you have to. There's smaller places, too..." She paused for a second, thinking. "If you want to check out different places I guess we could get train tickets and go to visit them."

"Of course I think you have a shot at this! If you look at the information, a lot of places look more at portfolio work than at grades. You just need to make sure you have a lot of work that you're happy with."

Misaki looked ready to cry but she held it in. The idea of being away from Maeko was dreadful to her. "But...But I don't...I want to be able to see you a lot! You're my best friend and I'll miss you!"

She smiled some, wipeing her eyes. Why did she even now have to be such a cry baby?

"Well if we have time to, considering all that's happening, it sounds good. We should find places that you might want to go in to too." Misaki smiled. "That way you'll have a list for next year when they talk to you about where you want to go in the future."

At the mention of the portfolio Misaki looked nervous and sighed. She went over to her purse and pulled out the invite she'd gotten back in June and held it out to Maeko, "Here this was for the 20th of June, it was an honorable mention at the Fashion instutie in Tokyo. Would that count as a start?"

"If it means that much to you, I'll take the train to wherever you end up whenever I can. Even if we end up on opposite sides of the world or something. You won't have to be on your own if you don't want to be. And you'll make other friends! If you're on a course about fashion then everyone else on the course shares a hobby with you, remember!"

"I...guess?" Maeko didn't know much about portfolios. Or fashion. Or art at all other than drawing smiley suns in the corners of her handouts. "I figured portfolio work was more, you know, things you've drawn and made. I think invitations like that would be something you'd put somewhere else..."

"Yeah I know that, but...still I like being around you. And if you wind up on the other side of the world I'll...I'll try to find a school near yours there." Misaki nodded afirmitively. "I don't want you to feel like you're on your own Maeko-chan. And no one's ever going to take your place. I won't let them. Even if they have the same hobbies, no one's as specaial as Maeko-chan."

Misaki smiled cheerfully, "Well I think it is, maybe I should ask like Shiori-chan, or one of the art techers." Misaki looked at it and pinned it onto the board. "I want to go there with you at some point...I mean take you to a show or something. But I don't know how I could get a good portfolio, you know. Drawings are great, but they don't show the way an outfit move or looks on a real person."

Maeko moved onto her bed when Misaki went to pin the invitation to the board, kneeling. Every few seconds she shifted her weight so she started bouncing slowly up and down.

"Yeah, Watanaka-san would probably know that sort of thing. She could probably help..." Maeko considered this new problem and decided to point out the obvious. "Can't you just take photos of someone wearing it?"

"Well who's going to wear them? I mean I could but I need to show a varaity. just having me wear it...doesn't work well," Misaki explained as she pulled out some magazines she had. She got on the bed and rocked along with Maeko as she flipped through the pages to show her.

"See how there are different models. It gives people differnt shapes and colors to wear it." Misaki smiled and giggled, "You can be really cute when you want to Maeko chan."

"Cute? Seriously?" Maeko sounded sceptical and returned to bobbing up and down and looking at the magazine.

"I'm sure we could find people in school who'd be willing." She suggested. She thought for a second then leaned back and then stood up and jumped off theside of the bed, returning to the computer and resuming mad clicking, apparently struck by sudden inspiration.

"We could set up a website!" She said. Within a few seconds she had the top few results from the search engine open in yet more windows. "That'd really get your name out there, don't you think?" The new windows were the portfolio websites of several fashion designers.

"Of course you're cute! Seriously you're one of the cutest girls I know. Even cuter then Kozue chan!" Misaki told her honestly. Misaki road the waves that came from the bobbing.

Misaki watched her as she went to her computer and got up to follow listening to the mad clicking and looked at her puzzled, "A...A website. Ah...well.." she thought about it for a moment then nodded, "Yeah! That sounds amazing! But...how would we go about setting it up."

Maeko still didn't believe but shrugged.

"I can probably figure that part out. It can't be that hard." She said, fully intending to drag Toru into this to help. "And then we can find people who are willing to act as models. If it's done as a club activity once school starts after break then it's something they can just on job and university applications so I'm sure people'll be willing to help!"

Misaki was getting more and more excited and she was pratically jumping with excitment. "Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. That would be amazing. I'll scan in all my drawings. Oh but won't we need someone to take pictures and movies and stuff?"

Misaki blinked some, "What about Retsu-sempai! He's head of the Audio and Visual club. Bet he would know how to make video."

"Maybe, but wouldn't it help him a bit to show he's not a bad guy. You know in the hospital he came in when he had breaks to play cards with me and he taped some of my shows that I couldn't see there. He was actually really nice." Misaki fingered her sleeve.

"I mean it would be really bad if I told Kanaye-sempai to give Kazuya-sempai a second chance, and then not give it for Retsu-sempai?"

"If he's been nice to you then it's not your place to decide he deserves a second chance." Maeko said painly, deciding now would be as good a time as ever to try out this 'honesty' thing. "Rumours like the ones he spreads can destroy people. Playing cards and taping shows for other people doesn't change what he's done and it doesn't mean he's done even so much as apologise."

And with almost a hint of anger. "It's not your place to decide if Arai-san deserves a second chance, either."

"I see, well maybe you should talk to him about saying he's sorry. Or talk to Asabi-sempai. He might be able to talk to Retsu-sempai. We all do bad things Maeko-chan, and while I don't agree with what he did, that still doesn't mean that he can't change and that if he does, he should be given a chance to prove that he's not that bad a person."

She paused, "I just think that Arai-san...he actually talked to me after the PA inccident and got me to understand why what I had done was wrong. I just...there's something really wrong with his situation and well, getting mad at him the way that Kanaye-sempai did, even though Arai sempai tried to appologize for doing that."

Misaki went over to the computer and brought up her journal, "He showed me this. (http://puppetofhisown.insanejournal.com/762.html) When we were talking."

Maeko shook her head. "Telling someone to say they're sorry defies the point completely. They're supposed to realize what they did was wrong, not just apolozise to save face. If he changes then that's fine but the fact that he might change doesn't mean a thing."

"How people act toward you doesn't change a thing about how others should react to them." Maeko said, deciding to ignore the implication that she, Kiriko and Kanaye doing that exact same thing meant nothing. "And their situations don't change that either and they don't that make thier actions any better or worse."

She sighed, looking over Misaki's shoulder. She wondered for a second why she hadn't seen that entry before. The date answered that question at first, it had been put up while she was gone.

"The date." She said calmly. "He's attacked senpai again since then. When you apologise there's an implication that you recognise what you've done is wrong and don't intend to do it agai-"

She paused, reading the first few comments and then quickly scrolling back up, and frowned. She'd finally noticed the privacy settings.

"I don't know why you can read this and it doesn't really matter." She said, anger returning to her voice. "But you do realize what a massive violation of privacy showing this to me is, right?"

"He was the one that unlocked it for me. A person can't say their sorry until they can understand why something is wrong. But there are times that a person thinks they're doing right in order to protect someone else." Misaki calmly explained and shook her head.

"So you're saying it's okay for Kanaye-sempai to act one way but not Retsu-sempai? I know what sempai did was wrong, and I know it hurt people. But look at what my shadow did and I'm taking full responsiblity for that. I'm sorry but, I don't think it's just fair to assume that everything he does is out of malice."

Misaki looked honestly at Maeko, "Maybe I am as naieve as Sempai says, but even so, I just don't like the idea of being angry and hostile at someone because of what they did before. It's like saying that no one can change and that even if we try to change people will only regard us for what we did that was wrong rather then looking at what we do that's right."

She sighed, "Retsu-sempai kept me from getting suspended. He talked the board into a more leniant punishment. I'm grateful for that. You think he's a creep because what he did before, but just becuase you don't agree with what he did doesn't mean I have to see him as a bad person Maeko-chan."

Misaki thought a moment, "My brother used to be a terrible flirt. Worse then anyone at this school. He probably had three or four girls on his arm. But you know what, he changed, and Retsu-sempai could too if given the chance."

"Retsu-senpai has been told that he's doing it wrong and has continued to do it. If he wanted to change then he would have by now." She paused, forcing herself to see Misaki as anyone else at all. "I don't understand what you're saying about Satou-senpai, you'll need to elaborate."

"Shadows don't count. They just just what people want. People are more than that, they take the effects of thier actions into consideration when making decisions. Retsu is not a shadow and has no excuse for not being able to recognize the difference between what he should and shouldn't do."

She hesitated for a second, frowning. Imagining Misaki as Tom was helping but was disturbing for all sorts of reasons, most of which involved the inherent creepiness of Tom being in thier room. After a few second's holding her breath, she spoke again. Slowly and deliberately, as if somehow verbally testing whether metaphorical ice could carry weight.

"Honestly..." Okay, no cracks so far. "It's selfish to say that other people should forgive someone just because of how they've acted toward you. It's insulting that you'd imply that how people treat you should have more of an impact than how they'd treat everyone else." She sped up and began to talk more quietly toward the end, physically flinching when she was done.

Misaki started to frown at the start of the speech, taking in everything, "Just the way he acts at times. Like he...he only likes me so that he can score points with you or something. I don't know."

"Then someone should try to talk to him about it, maybe if he can see what's really going on." she said softly. "Even if he's not a shadow, he might need someone to point out things to him. That's all I'm saying. He's probably blinded by what he thinks is right and trying to protect something that he cares about. It...it really makes it hard for you to see things when you want to believe that it's the right thing to do."

Misaki stared at her a moment then started to laugh quietly and grinned happily, "Maeko-chan...that...that was the most honest thing you've ever said to me!" She suddenly hugged Maeko, "I'm so proud of you."

Misaki looked down some, "I guess in a way it is..."

"People have talked to him about it." Maeko sighed. She caught herself started to sign as she spoke and forced herself to stop. It was a stupid crutch. Instead of signing, she balled her hands into fists and released them over and over. "He doesn't listen. I doubt he'll listen to anyone but that boy of his..."

THAT reaction caught Maeko off-guard. Partly because she'd been expecting anger and partly because she'd still been forcing herself to see Misaki as Tom to fascilitate arguing. It had been downright terrifying for a second.

But it was't yelling and it wasn't jeering and it wasn't slow and silent but deliberate signing translated into calm monotone reminding her to keep in mind her place. That was probably good. She remained silent, mentally exhausted by the effort that had taken.
