Yoshimi blinked down at the newest note. 'Her' school? If the writer didn't go to the the same school, then maybe it was someone from a rival school? The writing seemed too advanced to be from a middle school student, but she was just a First Year at the high school herself, so...

She shook her head. There was no point debating the sender's identity, as it stood. If it was a trick, it could easily be from several people using a false persona. Still, a gracious note deserved a gracious answer.

'I'm not too sure how many other people use it, but I like it a lot. I'm flattered that you think there's something cute about me!

That's okay, you don't have to tell me anything you aren't comfortable with! (^.^);; Do feel free to share other things, since I'd like to learn more about you~ But there's no pressure. I can imagine how hard it must be to send something like this.
' Oh, could she imagine, having approached several shoe lockers in middle school only to give up at the last minute. Pushing the thought aside, she placed the new note in her shoe locker and hurried on her way.

It was two days later that a new note arrived. Again it was the simple double fold as before, and the same notepaper. The sender had written this one several times since there were eraser marks over the paper where they had taken out words.

I’m sorry this is so late. I have been rather busy and I wanted to answer your question after gathering my thoughts. So it is your signature then. Maybe I should come up with something to use too. Though I’m not sure what I should use. Can you give me a suggestion or two?

I was not sure what to make of your comment about what I am comfortable with. There are a number of reasons I would tell you who I am, but I do not think it would be a good idea to do so at this time. Thank you for being understanding about it though, I did not expect that you would want to know about me at all.

I like to take walks around town in the summer and I like mango flavored shaved ice. I really do not like ice cream very much. I am really not sure what to tell you about myself. I do like kendo though.
Yours humbly
Your Admirer

Walks around town...? Yoshimi frowned. Obviously the sender wasn't one of those cute, shy, mildly agoraphobic boys that she was into, then. The shaved ice thing was promising, though; she did like sweets, so that wouldn't be a bad idea for a first date once--

Ugh, what am I doing!? This is probably just some popular girl having fun at my expense! I shouldn't be taken in so easily, not after...

Having a dead boyfriend who was also a cheating man-ho? Did not inspire optimism in one's personal relationships. Still, she owed the sender a proper response, in order to keep up appearances if nothing else. She most definitely was not hoping that someone really did like her.

'I think a signature would be neat! (^.^) It has to come from the heart, though!' Which was a lie. She just used emoticons in her writing because they made it so damn easy to come off as happy all the time. 'I like shaved ice too! (That coconut flavor that the stand downtown has is my favorite (^_^);;) I like ice cream well enough, but you know how sometimes you've got an ice cream cone and then you lose your balance and the ice cream falls out and it's really messy? I'm super clumsy, so that's kind of a pain!' Even in text, she had a tendency to ramble. 'Anyway, please write back, as I'm very curious about you!'

By lunch there was the paper returned to her locker. The writing this time was in pencil and was written in small hand writing. Clearly the person writing was in a hurry, but the curves in the kanji indicated that they were not writing this on a very flat surface.

I see, well if you think it comes from the heart then clearly you know more about it then I do. Does this seem an alright signature? 6_6 I was not certain if it would look too odd on the page. I like numbers, and am good at math, so I thought a number based signature would be good. Someone once told me that numbers make for cute smiles, I am not sure if that is true, or not.

Sorry if the words are so small and hard to read, I got your note and had to go to class, so I am trying to write this on my leg while listening to my teacher talk about this one dead writer during the Hein period. So very boring this teacher is that he’s actually put two honors students to sleep. I am grateful I have your letter to write back to, it is keeping me awake. 6_6

I have never tried the shaved ice from the stand downtown before. I think I should like to try it now on your recommendation though. Coconut seems rather tasty; I’ve only ever tried it on some pastries that I picked up on my way home. Honestly I didn’t see you as the klutzy sort; it only makes you cuter though. This is also why I avoid ice cream; I tend to get it all over my hands and such when I eat it. To my friends it looks strange and I get teased about it.

I hope that you can write back when you can. I better hide this before the teacher sees it.

Yours humbly
Your admirer

Yoshimi giggled a little at the newest note. 6_6? How... unenthusiastic. She pictured the writer as one of those eternally displeased boys who took their coffee black (like their souls) and wrote song lyrics about not being okay. Still, it was kind of endearing and quirky. Maybe the notes were legitimate?

'That's a good one! I'm not very good at math' - which was true; when she was working out problems, her impatience always caused her to take shortcuts that she really wasn't skilled enough to use - 'but it's very expressive! (^.^);; Can I call you 6_6-san for now? (Or whatever honorific you'd like, I'm not sure what to use)

Boring classes? I know how that is. I used to fall asleep in class all the time last year. I still do, sometimes, when Ishino-sensei's teaching and I'm really tired. She's gone easy on me since the crash with
' - this is struck through several times - 'lately. I'm getting better at staying awake, though. I just switched to a new energy drink that seems to work really well.'

She frowned. Geeze, I get a secret admirer and I can't think of anything but food and Bromonade to talk about! This would be so much easier if she could find some common ground...

'Do you have any hobbies that you enjoy?
—(^.^);;-chan
'

Just writing about energy drinks had left Yoshimi acutely aware of how tired she felt. Yawning, she folded up the new note, placed it in the usual spot, and wandered off towards the vending machines.

When she got back a new note was placed in the locker. Folded as neatly as before, only this time it had a slight smudge of dust from a cheeze-it snack on it. Someone had put it in there in haste.

You really think so? I am not very good at making faces, but I am glad you like it. 6_~ I will try to come up with more. Math is not an easy subject, I do not really like it very much I am afraid. Maybe someday we can study together? I can help you with math if you can help me with these silly classics.

6_6-san is fine. It made me smile when you asked that of me. I am really happy that you keep responding. I didn’t think a girl like you would. I’m sure you get lots of letters all the time from people. I feel very honored that you would talk back to me.

I bet that you look very cute when you sleep though. Sometimes I believe that the teachers ramble on purpose to put us to sleep so they do not have to teach us. But sleeping in class can be fun, especially if others do not know you are doing it, and you answer the question right in your sleep. I did that twice in my science class. I could not remember what happened after when my friend asked me how I knew the answer.

Ishino-sensei, she teaches English does she not? I do not think I have had her yet as my teacher. Is she any good? Oh a new energy drink? I need one of those. I get sleepy when I play games on my Z-box 380. Can you tell me which one you drink?

Hobbies, well I like kendo, and playing games on the z-box. I like chess, 7_7 I know it is a lame game to some people, but it can be a lot of fun when you think about it in different ways. I also like manga. I do not have a lot in my collection. What about your hobbies? What do you do when you are at home?

Yours humbly

Yoshimi frowned at the note. This was stupid, and she wasn't getting anywhere! The frustration that had been simmering below the surface during her previous responses finally boiled over. She had nothing important in common with this person; they just thought that she was cute. Or claimed to think so, anyway. It was either a shallow attempt to get into her pants or some girl's plot to falsely inflate her self-esteem in order to make fun of her later, neither of which she was going to fall for. Why keep responding, other than to keep up appearances, and why keep up appearances when she had no reason to care about the sender's approval? She didn't even want a boyfriend!

Stupid, stupid...

Fuming at nothing in particular, she balled the letter up and dropped it into the nearest trash can.

A day later a note was placed in her locker. Again it was the same fold and everything. The difference this time is that it came with something rather interesting with it. There was several coupons for shaved coconut ice for the down town stand that Yoshimi had mentioned in her letter.

I hope that I have not offended you somehow. Maybe I haven’t been as forthcoming as I should. But I am rather intimidated by girls, and you are the first that I have had the courage to write to. If you want me to stop, I will. But really I like reading your letters. They make me smile at night before I go to sleep. I am always happy when they come back to me and I get to see your hand writing.

You can tell a lot by the way a person writes, you know. I would like to get to know you better if I can.

Yours hopefully
6_6 –san

P.S. The coupons, I hope that you can use them. I know it’s going to get hotter. Would you like to meet soon at the stand by chance?

If Yoshimi had been near a desk, she would have driven her head against it. Coupons? What? Was that an attempt to buy her trust? Nevertheless, the note struck a chord with her — the tone was so...enchanted, like these little snippets that it only took her one or two minutes to write were just making this person's day. To her, it sounded like the sort of thing that she could've sent to Furukawa-senpai less than a year ago, had she been brave enough. She felt a twinge of sympathy for the writer.

Ugh, maybe I'm being too harsh with...whoever this is.

Trying to ignore the voice in her head repeating that this was a trap trap trap (and not the good kind), she started on her next response.

'I apologize for my silence lately. I'm still very stressed due to school. Sorry, 6_6-san!!' She paused. Was she just making excuses? She wasn't sure. 'I used to be quite shy as well, so that's no problem (^.^);; You have a 380? That's cool! My boyfriend used to' Several dark scratches. 'I like to stop by the stand on Saturdays, around three-o-clock or so. If you're free this weekend, you could swing by there and say hi? (^.^);;'

She folded the note and placed it in the usual spot, wondering all the while what it was that her handwriting said about her.

The note was returned, and this time the writing seemed to be faster, as if the person were nervous when they wrote it.

It is understandable. I have been having my own issues as of late. I just thought I might have scared you off or something. It’s nice to hear that I am not the only shy one here. I was worried that someone as pretty as you are would not think I was suitable for you. That was why I didn’t want to tell you who I was because I was sure that you would laugh at me. But I guess I worried over nothing.

Yes I own one; I’m not the best player of it though. I really need to work on playing more games that my friends would like. The ones that I normally play aren’t as fun to them as they are to me.

Three o’clock on Saturday is fine by me. Should I wear something so that you’ll know me? God that must sound like something out of a bad Shojo. Maybe we should, I do not know, meet by a window seat or something. That way if you are early or I am, we can see one another first.

Gratefully Yours

Yoshimi was pleased at the new note, though some part of her still suspected that this was an elaborate plan to stand her up and make her look desperate. But getting stood up at the sweet shop wouldn't be so bad, would it? She went there anyway, so she could just play it off as a regular visit if that happened. Plus, they had sugary things there, and Yoshimi did love sugary things.

She struggled to start her next response. Her? Pretty? That was an unusual opinion. Between the pigtails, the glasses, and the fact that she still fit comfortably into her training bras, she was one of the plainest girls in her year.

'What kinds of games do you like? Ah, nevermind, let's talk about that on Saturday! (^.^);; If you have a hat, I guess that would make it easy to recognize you?' She was most definitely not jealous of Toru for getting a cool boyfriend with a cool hat. 'The open-air tables out back are really nice, so we can meet up at one of those if you want.

See you Saturday!

'

The note was again folded in the three folds and placed neatly in the corner. The writer had taken his or her time with this one as their writing was slow and deliberate as if they were trying to quell excitement and not show too much of it in their writing.

I hope to know what games you like too! You seem very excited about this, so am I. 6_6 As for the hat, yes I have one, but promise you won’t laugh at it. I never really wear it out much; I am not really a hat person. It looks sort of like something you would wear in uniform.

Open air tables sounds like a good place to meet. I usually sit out front, so I have not really been in the back. Would it be okay to bring you a gift too?

Yours humbly until Saturday
6_6- chan
