Equivalent Exchange. Or something.
Who: Toru and Yoshimi
What: returning a cell phone, borrowing some *special mangas*
Where: Nanakamado, outside room 1-B, maybe elsewhere
When: After school, Friday
Why: Because Toru should probably give Yoshimi back her phone before he asks for *advice*

Class had ended for the day, and Toru could not wait to get the item in his pocket back to its owner. It wasn't his, it kept buzzing at odd times, and he was fairly certain that things would be much, much worse for him if he held onto it any longer. So when the final bell rang, he made a beeline for Yoshimi before she could even leave her desk. In one hand he held her cell phone. That morning, he'd accidentally taken it from where it fell after she had fallen on him, making sure to delete the evidence of his meeting with Kazuya from it afterward. Though, considering that the girl had even recorded the video in the first place, there was only so much damage control that Toru could do.

"Er, T-tachibana-chan... y-you dropped your phone this morning. Y'know, when..." He trailed off, not wanting to speak of it out loud. "I... I think the fall might've damaged it a little..." The last part was a lie. Any loss of data was Toru's own doing.

Yoshimi's cheeks turned a rather interesting shade of red, somewhere between the color of her uniform blazer and that of an overripe tomato. Having the whole day to think about the morning's events had only left her more embarrassed than she'd been to start with. Fortunately, she'd been able to visit the library during her lunch break to check out some reference books on how to prepare a formal apology.

"Ishinomori-kun! I, uh! I..." Less fortunately, she had a mind like a sieve and had managed to forget everything that she'd read. Fully expecting this, she'd prepared note cards, which she proceeded to fish out of her pocket and begin reading from.

"I sincerely apologize for the incident earlier and hope that you and Arai-senpai are both uninjured! I also hope that your meeting was not ruined or otherwise left unbearably awkward as a result of this incident! Bow here." She blinked. "What does that—oh! Nevermind, that part's for me!" She bowed with all the grace and humility that could reasonably be expected from an awkward fifteen-year-old.

"...a-and thank you for picking up my phone! I thought I'd lost it."

Now, Toru had been half-expecting some kind of apology from Yoshimi. He had not expected a whole formal apology. Especially not one with notecards. Before directly handing the girl her phone, he humored her by listening through the whole thing, and didn't even laugh when she accidentally said 'bow here.' It was, after all, a heartfelt apology.

"Th-thanks, Tachibana-chan. Don't worry, though, i-it... it worked out well in the end." Toru slid the phone across the desk to her. "But, um... c-could you... not talk about this? It's... a private matter... p-please understand..." Now he was going slightly red.

"Don't worry, my lips are sealed!" Yoshimi hopped up onto the nearest desk and started checking her phone over for external damage. "I know that things could get, uh, complicated for you two if word got out. High school's vicious." She pouted a little, swinging her feet back and forth.

"...it's not really fair for things to be like that, but! Since they are, I'll do everything I can to help you guys keep it a secret!" Satisfied that her phone had only picked up a few scratches, she flipped it open and started checking to make sure that everything still worked properly. "I've, uh, done the secret relationship thing once or twice myself, if you want tips on how to pull that off."

"Thanks." Though he didn't go to the trouble of sitting on a desk or anything, Toru still stood right next to Yoshimi. Proximity saved him from having to worry about being overheard at all. "Th-that means a lot to me..."

He would have left it at that if she hadn't said that she could help. The girl would definitely know her way about concealing a romance... and perhaps she knew her way around other things, too. Toru awkwardly hugged one arm close to his body and addressed her.

"I-if you could... i-it'd be really amazing if you'd help me... b-because, I've... w-well, I've never been in a relationship, much less a secret one. I figure if you're gonna know about this, y-you might as well help me..."

HURRICANE YOSHIMI HAS BEEN UNLEASHED

This was his first relationship? Could those two get any more adorable? Yoshimi grinned, more determined than ever to help out.

"It's no trouble, Toru-kun! I'm a professional at this kind of thing." Which was to say that she had all of three months' experience in the field, most of which had required very little effort on her part, but Yoshimi wasn't one for worrying about details.

"First off, you can get away with more than you'd think by claiming that you're just friends from the Anti-Bullying Club! Act really shocked if anyone questions it. If you stick to your guns no matter what, even a seasoned boys' love hound like me can be convinced that nothing's going on." She nodded sagely at this.

"But even being best friends can only explain spending so much time together, so sometimes you're gonna need an alibi." More nodding to herself. "That might seem excessive now, but the rumor mill at this school can get pretty crazy. I mean, have you heard the stuff going around about Shirai-san and Tanaka-senpai?" Yoshimi plowed on without waiting for an answer, clearly on a roll.

"I'm not even sure that those two know each other! Totally ridiculous. But anyway, I can cover for your dates if people get suspicious." She held up her cell phone, evidently satisfied that it hadn't taken anything but superficial damage. "Let's trade numbers! Just text me the official story and I can say we were studying that night or that I saw you on Matsuri or something."

Toru had expected maybe one or two lines of advice concerning the matter. He was hardly prepared for such a deluge of information. But, considering that he did not want to seem inattentive, he smiled and nodded the whole way through. After all, he got the gist of it, right?

"Th-the problem... a-ah, well... I've been excusing my trips to Paradise with you guys as club activities with the Anti-Bullying Club. I-I mean, it wouldn't normally be a problem, but I hardly have a reputation as someone who goes to a lot of clubs..." he said, awkwardly swaying back and forth as he stood next to the desk.

"B-but, I know what you mean about the rumors... y-you hear some pretty crazy stuff, you know? L-like, that Kondo-san set up Sakuraba-senpai and Sonozaki-senpai on a date? S-so, it wouldn't hurt to be careful, right?" Toru was aware that he was in a precarious situation as it was. He heard the gossip about himself, from time to time. It could only get worse.

"If... w-well, if you want to, y-you can cover for me... th-that'd be nice... s-so, here's my number...." The otaku pulled out his phone, reminded vaguely of that morning, when he'd given Kazuya his number in a similar fashion, yet for a considerably different reason. "It's ***-***-****." He was amazed that two people had been given his phone number in one day, when it had previously been nobody outside of the team's leaders.

"Mine's ***-***-****!" she chirped. Yoshimi's gratuitous helpfulness was, at its core, another attempt to repent for the tree incident; she did feel guilty, both for spying and for inadvertently disrupting the meeting.

"I guess the club thing is a problem. I mean, I'm in every club, so nobody thinks anything of it, but for everyone else..." She trailed off, trying to think of a plan that didn't involve using the Anti-Bullying Club as a cover, then got distracted by the rumor about Kozue's lesbian matchmaking. It was totally ridiculous! But then, her guess about Kazuya sending the letters had seemed ridiculous less than a day ago.

What if that's, like, the power of my Persona...? What if I can make people fall in love just by wishing for it!? I read a shoujo manga like that once, and this whole Paradise thing is pretty out there, so...

...then again, Scar-tan hasn't been caught making out with Grumpypants-senpai yet, so I guess that's not it.

She zoned back in to reality. This was no time for quirky fantasies! She had one half of a legitimate gay couple standing right in front of her!

"But yeah, text me anytime! Or call me, or whatever, even if you don't need me to cover for stuff right then. I'm always happy to help!" Really, really happy, as it stood. "I-I owe you two, and I know a lot about this stuff, except for the whole 'not being a guy' thing, so feel free to come to me with questions or anything."

Finally confronted with something directly useful, Toru dutifully tapped Yoshimi's number out on the keypad and saved it to his phone. Friend #2. That taken care of, he stuffed the phone back into his pocket, leaving his dorky-keychain-of-the-day hanging out as usual.

"Um... actually..." he began, having remembered something relatively important. The otaku's mannerisms suddenly took a turn for the even more awkward, hugging his limbs tight to his body and looking patently at the floor as opposed to Yoshimi's face. "S-since you do know a-a lot about... this kind of thing..." Gulp. "Doyouthinkyou'dwannapossiblygivemesometipsnow?" It was getting bad. The last time Toru had run his words together this incomprehensibly was when he attempted to solicit the assistance of Kanaye and Keiichi in getting Misaki to stop crushing on him. And that certainly worked out well. "B-b-because, you know, th-this is my f-first relationship w-with anyone, a-and... all I know about girls is... f-from H-games and anime, s-so... I know even less about... doing things... w-with guys." It was even rarer that his nervous stuttering would impede his communication to this degree. But at least Toru had been able to say it. He braced himself for Yoshimi's reaction.

Yoshimi's face turned an even more interesting shade of red than it had been before the apology.

"A-ah, I-I can help..." She had no reason to blush, really; she was experienced enough to have picked up her fair share of useful sex tips. But the subject was... unpleasant, for her. Sex sucked when she was the one having it, probably because her guiding policy was 'just shut up and don't complain or else boys won't like you anymore'.

Still, Toru seemed so innocent (for an H-game aficionado? Yoshimi's mind worked in mysterious ways sometimes) and Kazuya seemed so lovestruck (after all, poetry that bad could only come from the heart) that she couldn't help but hope for the new couple's sex life to be a little less bleak and depressing than her own. Maybe they'd end up having one of those healthy, caring relationships — the ones that, as far as she could tell, currently existed only in BL manga. Something about the thought struck her as inspiring.

"Tips? I've got tips!" She grinned her usual 'so I heard something about boys kissing each other' grin, and if it felt a little fake this time, she hoped that it wasn't showing through.

"I've got some, um, pretty, um, detailed yaoi, if you wanna borrow something. M-most of my stuff isn't all that hardcore! But some of it is, and it's a good reference for, um, positions you might wanna try and stuff." She was pretty sure that it wasn't particularly normal to let male classmates have free access to her porn stash, but Yoshimi wasn't a particularly normal girl. Plus, it was all done with good intentions.

"But otherwise it's not all that realistic. Like, u-um, a lot of artists, um, leave steps out." She had a distinct feeling that this was going to end with her lecturing on the importance of lube.

By now, Toru really ought to have been able to sense "danger." Yet when Yoshimi smiled her obvious 'so I heard something about boys kissing each other' grin, he remained comfortably unintimidated. His main reaction, in fact, was to blush furiously when the girl actually said 'yaoi.' There was something about the subject being put in exact, real terms that just made everything infinitely more uncomfortable for him.

"Y-yeah, that... that'd probably be helpful, f-for someone like me..." Toru was really trying his hardest not to seem frightened. It wasn't working as well as it could have been. "I-if it's okay, I could... er... stop by and borrow a few?" And this is the part when all of your online friends would disown you completely, grumbled that irritable, critical part of his mind that seemed to have vanished from his consiousness around the time that he kissed Kazuya. Now, a few hours later, it was back full-force. "A-and, maybe a few copies th-that aren't hardcore? B-because, I-I don't really know how to go about... things in general, w-with dating someone like senpai... i-it's not like anything I've read, watched, or played has helped at all."

He quirked an eyebrow at the last thing she said, though. "Unrealistic? S-steps?" Somehow, these were things he never really considered. After all, it was an alien world to him.

Yoshimi had started to brighten up, shaking off her initial awkwardness. The conversation was drifting comfortably far away from anything that would require her to think about her own experiences, and that made all the difference.

"Feel free to borrow stuff! I only have a couple of R-18 pieces, anyway. The rest is all character development and boys kissing - just kissing, I mean - and love blooming on battlefields." She was something of an idealist when it came other people, just not herself; it was why she turned all of her attention outward to begin with.

"I don't think you'll need a reference for much except for, you know, technical stuff, though." She waggled her eyebrows in a way that clearly said 'and by technical I mean sexy'. Yoshimi was a woman of many highly communicative facial expressions. "Not so much for dating and all. That just kind of falls into place when you're with someone special, I think." She sighed happily, ever the hopeless romantic.

"A-and even some of the technical" - eyebrow waggle - "stuff is like that. I mean, you're both guys, so you've already got a pretty good idea of what feels good, right? You two could probably wing it. Just go slowly, know that you can talk to Arai-senpai - I mean, he wants you to be happy, right? - and, um, don't be too shy to speak up if you're not comfortable with something." So basically, don't be like me.

Toru nodded slowly, wondering if the bright red his face had surely turned was leaving a glowing aftertrail, like the lights on the back of a car. Probably.

"Er... w-when would be a good time f-for me to come pick some up? B-because, I... er, I could walk back to your place n-now-ish, if you'd like..." He gave an uncomfortable glance left, then right. "I-is that alright? B-because, I wouldn't want t-to make you bring anything in to school o-or anything!" He'd almost made that mistake once; accidentally leaving the box of a less-than-appropriate game in his bag. Thankfully, he'd noticed it and shoved it under a messy pile of papers before anyone else did.

"B-but, you think so? The... our meeting, this morning, I-I know it went well, but... i-is it really that simple?" Then again, he thought, you've gotten "good endings" just by winging it in ren'ai, before. This shouldn't be too different, right? He caught the suggestive eyebrow-waggles, too. "Um, b-but... thanks! You... you're being r-really helpful, you know?"

"Now's great!" she chirped, hopping down from the desk and packing up the rest of her books. "I live off campus. It's about a twenty minute walk from the school, but there's a tram going that way in..." She glanced at her phone. "Six minutes, if we can catch it."

Yoshimi was positively glowing with happiness. She actually felt useful for once! She hardly ever felt useful, except to Jiro (who, being a ferret, could only do so much for one's flagging self-esteem).

"Ah, well, there's no rule saying that this stuff has to be complicated. I mean, it can get complicated, and it's all probably kind of nerve-wracking and scary right now, right?" Dating Furukawa had been downright terrifying at times, with all the worrying that she'd done. "But that gets easier, I think."

She smiled, more to herself than anyone else. Her motives weren't entirely altruistic (what self-respecting fujoshi wouldn't want to get in on something like this?), but she honestly did want to help.

"Should we get going?"

Toru gave Yoshimi a knowing, sidelong glance. "Nerve-wracking and scary doesn't even begin to cover it... i-it's different for you, right? Since, um... you know."

Then he smiled. "Yes, l-let's get going!" His belongings were already gathered into his bag, and he began to walk towards the door.

I can't believe I'm doing this. I'm really, seriously doing this. I'm borrowing manga that I've said that I'd never read from the fujoshi in my class, to use as a reference for a pseudo-romance that I'd never expected or even thought of wanting. Wow, Toru. Wow.
