Who: Masami and Tom
What: Purchasing tea
Where: Convince store
When: Random evening
Why: Cause we all have to get our groceries some times.

Tom walked through the aisles, his fingers running over the shelf rather quickly. It was almost like a ritual for him. He did it every week, go in grab all the food he would need and get out.

The one place he ended up lingering was the tea section. He'd always enjoyed tea, and so it was one of the only time he actually paused to consider new possibilities, or what he was in the mood for, as opposed ot just grabbing the same thing every week. (Well almost the same thing, he changed it up every once in a while, just in case.)

And so he stood, wondering to himself. In the states one could find plenty of tea that had an eastern flavor, and now Tom wondered if he could find something that had come from the west.

Masami entered the convenience store and beelined for the only section that mattered to her at the moment: the tea section. Maybe it had been all the chaos surrounding Kiriko, but she had somehow not realized that her tea supply was dangerously low.

She was so absorbed in her quest for tea that she didn't even notice Tom until she nearly bumped straight into him. A momentary surprised expression crossed her face before she suppressed it and cleared her throat.

"Oh, Sagaki-senpai. Are you here for tea also?"

Tom had seen Masami coming, certainly he'd made a habit of putting himself in situations where people would try to take a surprise swing at him, so he'd gotten used to minding his surroundings. He braced himself, in case she hit him, and prepared to catch her should she fall.

The possibility of calling out and warning her would not actually occurr to Tom until several minutes after the fact.

But, thankfully there was no crash in the middle of the tea section, as Masami recognized him. He nodded to her question, and held up his bag of groceries.

"It's about time for me to pick up food, and I rather enjoy tea."

He reached down and grabbed a box that had a mint flavor from the shelf and looked it over. He thought for a moment, then spoke as if frustrated.

"When I was younger my mom used to show me how to make it straight with just leaves, but I can't seem to remember how anymore."

"Oh, really you just put some leaves in a kettle and add hot water," Masami began, "But how many leaves you should use depends on how strong you want the tea to be. You also have to take into account how long you let it steep before you drink it..."

Masami stopped, realizing that she had begun rambling. "Sorry," she said, trying to mask her embarrassment by pretending to look down at some tea sitting on a lower shelf. "So what's your favorite kind of tea? I like oolong and green tea best."

Tom shrugged.

"Anything with spearmint in it mostly, I like sweeter stuff."

He turned toward her and nodded.

"It makes oolong hard to drink."

Tom put a finger to his chin.

"You know a great deal about tea drinking you know. Is that another hobby?"

"Eh? A hobby?" Masami replied, taking a moment to consider the question. "Well, I never really thought of it that way, but I guess you can call it that. I just really like tea."

"There's nothing more relaxing than drinking a good cup of tea in a nice, quiet place. Sometimes I really..." Masami stopped herself and took a breath. "Oh, I'm a member of the tea club at school. If you like tea, you should come by sometime," she suggested, hoping Tom wouldn't notice her slip.

Tom leaned down and picked up another box. Sakurabe seemed to keep cutting herself off. It made Tom wonder what she kept *almost* saying.

At the invitation to the tea club Tom shook his head. He nodded at his tea selection and put it in his basket. Then finally looked at Masami.

"I don't eat or drink anything I didn't make myself."

Masami let out a momentary frown before grabbing a can of green tea leaves. She was curious why Tom only ate and drank things he himself made, but given his suddenly terse reaction she decided it was better not to pry.

"Oh... that's OK then... speaking of clubs, are you in any already? I guess you already know that I'm in the tea club and the kendo club..."

"Just the... well the one we're in together. I umm... I kind of keep to myself.

I was thinking of volunteering in the administrative office to give us a chance to monitor paper work and such."

Tom frowned at giving out so much information. He reached up and scratched his head and looked away for a moment.

"I guess that might help us get a lead into whatever's behind that other place... but, why don't you try doing something else just for the fun of it?" Masami asked. She was glad that Tom was such a reliable ally but it seemed like he really had no life outside of the investigation.

"You're always welcome to join the kendo club... you seemed interested in it, back on the school trip."

Tom looked at Masami with utter confusion on his face. He put a hand on the back of his head and frowned. Like the idea just didn't compute.

"Just for the fun of it? Hobbies can teach you valuable applicable skills for situations, but... why would someone do something that had no purpose other then fun?"

With her previous suspicion confirmed, now it was Masami's turn to look confused. Did Tom really not do anything just for basic entertainment? "What do you mean? People... need some time to relax, don't you think? I'd never be able to work all day, every day..."

"Sagaki-senpai, do you really have no hobbies at all?"

Tom began to edge toward the counter. This conversation felt like it would eventually delve into something they wouldn't want to discuss in public.

"I don't put much stock in wasting free time on relaxing. It's time I could spend researching, or training, or patrolling.

It's just like how I don't put any stock in putting on that whole pretend to care mask everyone else does. It always seemed like a waste to me."

Masami noticed Tom edging toward the counter, and took it as a sign that he was getting a bit unnerved. Seeing that, she wanted to simply drop the subject, but something in her stirred her onward.

"They're not even pretending, I think most of them really don't actually care. They're all so absorbed in themselves that they can't see anything else..."

She regretted it immediately after saying it. It wasn't like her to lose control like that. Not sure what else to do, she grabbed a can of tea leaves as quickly as she could and said, "Anyway, you should come to the kendo club sometime. I guess... it's good training for that other place..." in a poor attempt to distract Tom from her previous comments.

Tom placed his groceries on the counter and watched as the clerk began ringing them up. he seemed to be watching in case the clerk did something.

"I didn't mean the club specifically, I meant people in general. But yes, the people in the group do seem to have disregarded all sense of social norms, that's why I never really joined the group.

Masami raised an eyebrow at this. She didn't quite understand Tom's thinking.

"But you go into that other place with the group... doesn't that make you part of it?"

Once Tom finished paying for his groceries, he stepped back so Masami could also pay for her tea.

He waited until she was finished, then walked out with her.

"Sakuraba, just because someone has the power, or is willing to go into Paradise it doesn't make them part of a team.

You know researched teams, but I could be sketchy is that how one builds a team?

And really, I'm a part timer. I can help them when they need it, and I'll work with them while they need me, but... that's it."
