Entry tags:renju, tom

Don't wanna get caught with our pants down.
Who: Tom and Renju
What: Combat practice.
Where: Room 22 -C
When: Evening of June 17
Why:Cause Renju doesn't wanna get screwed when the Shadows decide that she can't use her persona.

Tom was waiting in Room 22-C as he had promised. He'd moved all the desks out of the way, A quick mention to Ito's father that he planned on doing some wrestling practice allowed him to borrow a small padded mat. Though he wanted padded weapons, he sadly hadn't had time to get or make them.

Sonozaku had impressed him more and more lately. Not only researching her persona, but wanting to go into Paradise, and now combat training. The girl was turning out to be one of the more impressive members of the investigation team, and he found himself rather pleased that she had asked. He quickly forced the thought from his mind. It didn't mean anything.

For some reason he wondered what would be best way to dress for the occasion, he decided on bare feet, and had hung his jacket, and the holsters for his numerous knives on a nearby window sill, Since the jacket was gone, and the weapons he'd also changed into his simple black t-shirt, and sat waiting.for when the student would arrive.

Renju was, as always, punctual, arriving at 22-C at precisely the appointed time after a quick dinner and a couple of hours in her dorm wrapping up her assignments. For lack of anything else remotely suitable to wear, she'd changed into her gym uniform in the nearest bathroom. It was a little embarrassing, but she wasn't going to ruin her uniform (and need to buy a new one) for a practice session. Her backpack was on her shoulder, though she set it down as soon as she was inside and fished around for her kama, their blades wrapped in fabric as usual.

"Thank you for taking the time to do this for me, Sagaki-san," she said, polite to a fault as usual (except in Paradise, sometimes, but that place seemed to bring out... unexpected things in people). "That... place was a wake-up call, and we don't know when this might happen again."

When Renju arrived Tom nodded to her, and without realizing it ran a hand through his hair. Letting out a long slow breath. It occurred to Tom that he seemed to be entering into a pattern of privately teaching the skills he had to tiny women.

"There is a pattern to it, I think, I just need to figure it out. Similarly Paradise has rules."

Tom cocked his head to the side, and put his hand to his chin as he often did when thinking.

"The Shadow can effect our situation, or the environment, but it can't seem to just will us to death. Perhaps because we are sentient entities, so we have the ability to effect the landscape as well?"

He blinked for a moment and looked at Renju.

"But anyways, you're here for training... right. Does the room meet with your approval? It's not too different from the room I was trained in... except we weren't in a school, and had ya know uniforms and such."

"I... am afraid I don't really know what to look for in something like this."

Renju did wonder where the mat came from--the gym, obviously, but besides that--and wasn't sure whether to assume Tom had managed to con Ito-sensei out of it, not unlike how he'd gotten this room in the first place, or just taken it. As ultimately decent a person as he seemed to be, his methods still left a lot to be desired for her.

But she wasn't going to say anything. It really wasn't worth it. Better to just get started so she could do what she came here for in the first place. "How should we begin?"

Tom looked her over, and crossed her arms. He felt a bit like he wanted to keep out of her personal space, or the space outside her personal space.

"It depends on if you prefer hand to hand, or if you want to work with the weapon.
Either way we'll start with the basics. I can show the basic moves, and then we'll practice them. And practice and practice until you can do them without thinking about it."

He let out a long slow breath, and put his hands in his pockets, and turned his head away as he kept feeling a need to look at her exposed legs.

"And yeah... that's... umm about it..."

Renju knew that look. Sort of. She'd never seen it directed at her, though, so she wasn't quite able to put two and two together; the moment passed awkwardly before she cleared her throat and spoke up again. "I think..." She took one last long look at the kama, then set them down on the floor. "I would rather start off unarmed. If they can take away weapons, then... I don't want to risk being left with nothing."

She was surprising herself a little bit with how seriously she'd been taking this lately. Kiriko's mockery of a wedding in Paradise, and the dangers in it--not to mention seeing Keiichi nearly die--had driven home the risk she was taking by doing it at all. She still wasn't sure why she was, but she couldn't just stop halfway. It was almost turning into something akin to a duty for her.

"We'll start with defensive actions then. It takes time to build up the necessary power for a successful attack. More so when you're attack is directed at supernatural;ly created mental projections.

Dodging is also going to take some practice. You just need to build up the instincts to see an attack coming and get out of the way. It takes time but it's worth it."

Tom didn't seem to carry the same doubts about his own actions as Renju, for him it was simply, the latest mission.

"So the best place to start is with your stance. It's one of the most important things in combat. A proper stance keeps you from getting knocked down, and learning how to shift from one stance to the next or keep balanced as you move can help you fight faster and stronger.

So feet shoulder width apart, right foot forward, knee bent, left foot back a little bit."

Tom demonstrated, slipping his feet into the pose, almost without thought. His hands also came up in a ready to fight position.

"If you do it right I should be able to push you from the front or the back and you won't budge."

Tennis was the only thing Renju had ever done that required anything remotely resembling a specific stance, so this was rather strange to her. Feeling a bit self-conscious all of a sudden, she shifted her legs into something resembling what Tom had described--the feet were the right width apart, but the right one wasn't nearly far enough forward, and the left had barely moved at all. Her arms were at her sides, since she wasn't entirely sure what to do with them at this point. It was pretty awkward, all told.

She looked down at her feet, shuffling them around a bit; they still weren't remotely close to right, but she really had no way to be sure. "Do you mean something like this?"

Tom looked over her stance. He put his hands on his hips and made "hmmm" sound. Her stance wasn't really right, but Tom felt strangely uncomfortable with the idea of interacting with her physically to correct it.

He leaned down, and reached out with his hands, and stopped, then put his hands back on his hips for a second, and finally resolved to correct her stance with his feet.

"Here, move your right foot forward, you want it far enough forward that your calf is perpendicular to the floor when you bend your knee.

And the back one should be further back. Not uncomfortably so, but more then you have it."

He nudged her right foot with his own, pushing it forward, and then tapped her left one with his toes at her ankle.

"There now umm..."

Tom knew he needed to test it but the thought of placing his hand on her diminutive shoulders filled him with a sense of unease. He told himself there wasn't much of a choice, and that it didn't matter, swallowing down those feelings.

"Now we need to check."

He reached out and gave Renju's shoulders a quick push to see if she was standing the right way.

Renju shifted her feet in response to the nudges and directions. It was a little strange that he wasn't pushing them, but maybe he wanted her to learn how the proper stance felt instead of just shoving her into it?

She thought nothing more of it, and she'd managed to reach a vague approximation of the correct stance by the time he was done. Somehow, though, she didn't associate 'check' with 'push to test balance', and the shove, however quick, caught her off-guard. Her arms windmilled reflexively in an attempt to stay upright, and she had to rock a bit to try and stay steady, but she was still standing at the end of all that. She considered that a favorable sign, but she knew it still wasn't quite right. "I'll practice it more at the dorm."

When Renju flailed, Tom had his hands up, ready to catch her should she fall. But she managed to stay steady. Tom nodded, and took a step back.

"It'll take some getting used to. The second one is horse stance."

He spread his legs out in a way that seemed incredibly far, even squatting, bent at the knees, toes pointed forward.

"This one is harder to do, and to get used to, but it'll keep you upright from several directions."
