Forgiveness would be nice....
Who: Toru and Reizo
What: An overdue apology
Where: That convenience store that Reizo lives over
When: Tuesday after school
Why: Because Toru doesn't like the prospect of getting his ass kicked.
Warnings?: None yet, but you know. This is Reizo we're talking about.

Toru sincerely hoped that this would be as close as he'd ever get to stalking someone. Over the past few days, a nagging feeling had entered his mind whenever he saw Reizo in class. The two certainly hadn't got off on the right foot, even before Toru had disappeared and his Shadow made things even worse. Now, as far as he could tell, his classmate kinda hated him, not to mention everyone else seemed to think that Toru had a crush on him. This feeling that he ought to set things right had been getting worse and worse over the last few days, and just now he'd finally given in to it. From a safe distance, he had started to follow Reizo home, in the hopes of catching him somewhere where they could talk.

His dedicated following didn't lead him all that far from the school. Apparantly, the place that Reizo was headed to was a convenience store. Toru waited for a brief while after his classmate had entered to follow him in. It was just an ordinary convenience store, similar to the one where he usually bought his food at. Inside it, he realized that he couldn't spot Reizo anywhere. Toru had assumed that he'd gone in to buy a snack or something, but now Reizo was nowhere in sight.

The too-wide grin he’d given the other boy shrunk at -kun, and his eyes narrowed a little, but he forgave it enough to turn away and towards the coolers opposite the magazine rack and grab a drink out of it. It’d always struck him as odd design to have the magazines across the aisle from the drinks, especially given the surprising amount of violence the store saw from time to time-- like when he’d broken a bottle over some little shit’s head to clear him and his wannabe friends out of the store. Tojiro’d griped for what seemed like forever about having to replace half the magazine shelf.

The drink hissed when he twisted the lid off and he turned back around to his classmate, one eyebrow cocked at the suggestion to move. He was fairly certain it had something to do with the other world if he wanted some privacy. People being nervous around him was nothing new, and it was the class social reject..

“Go outside,” he suggested between swigs of his drink, then walked back towards the side door and out of it to take a lean against the fence separating Tojiro’s and the residential area.

In no mood to dawdle, Toru simply watched as his classmate took the time to grab a drink from the cooler. Were the situation a bit more casual, a soda would have been nice. As it was, there was no excuse. He simply nodded at Reizo's suggestion to go out the side door (even though this most likely led to a dark alleyway) and followed after him. He hoped that this didn't look too suspicious.

As soon as the door eased itself shut behind Toru, he looked Reizo right in the eyes. It was a challenge not to flinch; even more of one to actually start speaking. "I-I wanted to apologize to you. For what happened back there. Sorry that I had to follow you here for it, but it wasn't something I could say in public or even in front of the others. B-because..." He gulped. "I'm sick of everyone- I'm sick of you- thinking that I feel the same way about y-you as that Shadow did." As soon as he'd said this, Toru shut his eyes very tight and hoped to god he wouldn't get punched. He knew that punching someone because they'd apologized to you was irrational, but he was also aware that Reizo didn't exactly make the list of Top Ten Rational Persona-Users.

Reizo eyed the boy critically over the lip of his drink, then lowered it with a solemnity that didn’t bode well for his classmate. The sudden shift of mood swelled when he pushed off the fence and walked up to the boy, and fell through when he walked by him and up to the trashcan sitting a few paces away from the side door.

“Next time you bother me, make sure it’s about something important.” He deadpanned and dropped the bottle into the trash. Reizo turned back towards his classmate, looking exasperated as he ran a hand through his hair and fished his cigarette pack out with the other.

“Do you really think I give a damn about your crush-- sorry, your imaginary crush-- on me? Kou’s .. other seemed to have a fascination with my cock too, but you don’t see him calling me out one-on-one to apologize for it.” Because he’s not a moron .

He cupped a hand around the end of his cigarette as he lit it to protect it from the summer wind and shook his match out afterwards.

“I just wonder if Ikeda will continue the trend.” He added, smugly.

When Reizo approached him, Toru was certain that his stomach had collapsed and conspired to take the rest of his organs with it, judging from the feeling he had in there. The relief he felt when it turned out just to be him disposing of his trash was probably them going on to the afterlife. Just as well; it was better than the entirety of him heading there.

But Reizo's response ruined any feeling of relief that he might have had floating around in him. It instead left him feeling more more defeated and worthless than before.

"If you don't give a damn, why are you still such an asshole to me? I-I just wanted to apologize, is all," he mumbled, trying not to sound to defiant. "Since I don't want you to hate me, at least."

“Asshole?” Reizo asked, lips forming around the word like it was something foreign and alien. He repeated it to himself under his breath a few more times, smacked his lips as if enjoying the taste, and leaned forward, blowing a direct stream of smoke into his cowering classmate’s face. The stale smell of smoke overpowered Reizo’s own junkyard dog scent.

His face broke in half, into his toothy, hungry grin; smoke leaked out a corner of his mouth.

“I ain’t ever been an asshole to you. You’re too fuckin’ easy a target. I like mine lively and with some fight in ‘em.”

He puffed out another steady stream of wispy smoke and leaned back away to stop crowding the other boy, and tipped his head quizzically.

“But I can start if you want it so bad, Toru-kun.”

Toru's initial response was fear. Not run-of-the-mill fear, but overpowering fear, fear that left him incapable of moving, feet rooted to the ground as if they were chained there. The smoke stung his eyes, but he couldn't react. The smile made him want to run away more than ever before, but at the same time it transfixed him like a hypnotist's watch and chain.

And by Reizo's standards, he realized as he stood there, the yakuza boy hadn't been an asshole. Certainly, he was unpleasant to Toru, but he was that way to everyone, naturally. Reizo acting truly mean to him would have led him into a similar condition to Kanaye on the camping trip. It might have been an insult, in a way, to call him an easy target, but at least it meant he was safe.

The boy shivered a bit involuntarily when his classmate finally stepped away from him. That was a scenario he could have done without.

"N-no, Reizo-san..." he said, pointedly correcting his presumptuous use of suffixes from before, "I came here to say I didn't want that. Y-you can forget about me now, if it'd be easier for you. Just so long as you don't only think of me as th-that thing, I'm okay."
