you've been fighting for my honor and i just don't understand
WHO: Kozue and Keiichi.
WHEN: Wednesday after the trip / Aomori's death, after school.
WHERE: School Hallways.
WHAT: Keiichi really is a good dude, that's what.
WHY: You wouldn't believe the things people say about her. Except that you totally should.
WARN: Not so far.

"Kondo-chan, why don't you slow down a little?"

Kozue did no such thing. She was walking at quite a fast clip through the club hallway at Nanakamado, especially considering the length of her legs. And especially in comparison to the young man who was trailing behind her; he wasn't a beanpole, but he had six inches on her, at least. Not to mention he was an athlete - a basketball player, the same one that had been "studying" with Kozue in the library on and off for the last few weeks. But truthfully, he was a few steps behind as much because he was mildly perplexed as because Kozue was walking quickly.

"Seriously, Kondo-chan, if you don't have a club meeting, and I don't have a club meeting,..." he trailed off, and Kozue -- along with several other people who were in the hall at the moment -- turned around to look at him. Although the onlookers were ranging through that particular high school blend of incredulous, interested, and something terrible is about to happen oh oh oh I've got to get a better look, Kozue herself just looked sort of exasperated. After all, why couldn't Satoshi get it? Sure, they'd had fun together, but they weren't dating. It was a part-time thing, at best. Right now? Not a good time for her, not for that. And yet, he'd texted her about hanging out; well, "hanging out". She'd responded that she had plans. He'd texted her again. And then two more times. And then he'd seen her in the hallway. And now he was making a scene in public. (Actually, it wasn't a scene yet -- but with a guy following her down a hallway, Kozue was having trouble imagining how this was going to end, other than with her acquiescing, or with him making a scene. And Satoshi had been getting less and less attractive with every text message, phone call, and whiny question.)

"I - I'm just tired, sempai, and I want to go home," she said, shaking her head. She was about to offer some alternative, another day, when he interrupted, gruffly.

"I thought you said you had plans."

Oh, great. Just what I needed. Dumb response, Kozue. "Look, sempai, I just meant--" She started, quietly, raising a hand in a soothing gesture; specifically, a gesture meant to soothe bruised egos. And the slightly-too-short basketball player Satoshi was having none of it.

"Typical. I should have known."

Nanakamado was getting more difficult as Paradise loomed more, Keiichi had decided. How was one supposed to focus on things like classes and grades when he was going into a new world and fighting to save people?

Along with that, though...he also had a social life now. He never considered himself truly anti-social, but the fact was he was spending a lot more time out of his dorm than he was used to.

It was that dorm that he was on his way back to, when he realized that someone he knew was being...followed. At first, Keiichi hung back, watching the conversation unfold. It didn't take him long to realize what was happening.

Clearly, poor Kozue was being accosted by a guy. One Keiichi sort of knew, in fact, considering Satoshi was in his homeroom.

This wouldn't do at all. Setting his jaw, Keiichi followed after them, his longer legs helping him catch up to the pair quickly. Ito-san placed a hand on the other boy's shoulder. Annoyedly, Satoshi spun, only to look up into the eyes of the taller chef.

"What's going on here, Saito-san," he asked, looking past him to Kozue, who still seemed to be alright. "Leave her alone, she's got somewhere to be."

When the upperclassman turned, Kozue looked up, and over Satoshi's shoulder, to see Keiichi. But he was looking at her, not at the guy he was actually talking to. Was he - did he have some business with Satoshi? No - her face bloomed into a smile for a moment, before she hid it, not wanting to give Satoshi the wrong impression. (Or, another wrong impression.) Keiichi was apparently intervening on her behalf. Of all the wonderful things...

While Kozue was having that realization, her sometime-boytoy was arriving at one that was rather different. Although not unrelated. He shrugged Keiichi's hand off, just a bit more roughly than was really required.

"No, I think I get where she's going, now." His words - especially the last one - were saturated with spite, and the implication of 'where she's going' was clear enough - especially paired with Saito's glare - to make at least one person still gawking in the hallway go 'oooooooh' quietly, before someone else stifled them.

Bless his heart, Keiichi didn't quite get the implication. He was still rather intent on his initial explanation, and the other boy's annoyance only seemed to confirm that fact.

Keiichi wasn't especially athletic, but he was tall. Taller than a basketball player, no less. Not especially intimidating generally, but Hell, he fought Shadows on the side. He could do this. Really.

As his hand fell to the side off of Saito's shoulder, Keiichi fixed the other man with a more intent stare. "I don't know what you're getting at, but it's pretty obvious that she doesn't want to be bothered by you right now. What kind of man stalks a girl through the school hallways?"

The whispers around them only grew louder. He could still see Kozue there, but this had rapidly become as much about his own ability to not back down as it was about her. She deserved better than being followed around, and he wasn't going to let him continue. No matter the cost.

"Don't you have practice," Keiichi finally asked. "Just go to practice and leave her alone. Things will work out much better for you that way."

Wow. He really was sticking up for her. Kozue took a step back, simply because, well, what if one of them punched the other or something? That was how it usually went in a movie or a book. Truth be told, two boys had never gotten in a fight over her, at least as far as she was aware. Certainly never right in front of her. And while she'd always thought it would be exciting, right now? Presented with the possibility? It wasn't nice at all. Oh, come on, don't actually let them fight, she pleaded, internally, although to who she was pleading was a genuinely good and unanswered question.

Saito, however, had ideas other than a fist-fight on his mind - that, or he'd decided that he might not have the best chances in a fist fight against a taller opponent, or the best chances of keeping his starting spot on the team if he got caught at something like that... For his purposes, repairing what he perceived as damaged pride, words were better and less personally dangerous weapons. His eyes narrowed, and he laughed rather unpleasantly.

"You care that much? Whatever. Go ahead, you can have her. It won't be long before she starts running around behind your back, anyway."

Keiichi's eyebrow raised at the last statement, but he still wasn't especially happy with Saito's line of conversation.

"Don't talk about her like a piece of property," Ito growled, and the other man almost goggled at him, the sneer on his face giving way to something between astonishment and utter shock.

"You don't...you know what, forget about it," Saito replied, shaking his head. "You'll find out sooner or later."

Stomping off, he perhaps took the advice of Keiichi, or really didn't want to spend anymore time with Kozue what he perceived to be her clueless new boytoy. Regardless, he was gone soon enough, and Keiichi stepped over to the far shorter girl.

"You okay," Keiichi asked, now that the interloper was finally gone. "He didn't hurt you, did he?"

"What, hurt me?" She shook her head, impressed, and already relaxing slightly. Not only did it seem that nobody was going to punch anybody else, but Satoshi probably wouldn't be bugging her for a long time. If he ever did again. "I'm just fine - he wouldn't have actually hurt me or anything, just been a jerk like he was doing anyway."

"But thanks. I mean, really, that was nice of you." She smiled up at him -- a really genuine smile, too. Boys tried to impress her often enough, but it was very seldom that they actually managed the feat of not reacting to any of the 'but she's a slut' verbal baiting; and 'she's not property' was, while far from the smoothest of lines, actually sweet. Weird, but sweet.

Keiichi nodded, casting a sidelong glance over his shoulder. Satoshi didn't seem to be showing any signs of coming back, so he allowed himself to react.

Thankfully it hadn't been a fistfight; Keiichi wasn't especially confident of his chances in one.

"Don't mention it," he replied. "You don't deserve to be accosted by guys like that. It makes me mad, though. That guy's been in my homeroom both last year and this year. I had no idea he was a jerk."

You never did really know people, Keiichi realized. There was always something hidden, be it a god in their head or a dick streak.

"So," Keiichi continued, "where are you off to today, anyway?"

Kozue caught herself smiling even more, and forcibly subdued her face; no, there were people watching. Though the small crowd had dispersed a little, with disappointed mutters, because there wasn't going to be a fight or (it seemed) any more of a scene, enough people were still watching curiously to make her self-conscious. "Why don't we - walk a little together? At least down to the shoe lockers. It's kind of crowded in here."

Pointed glance at onlookers. Then, she looked back to Keiichi, and, in a lower voice, continued, "Not that this won't make the rumors worse, but there's no point in sticking around, just to rub it in. And I - uh -" She put a hand to her head. "He just couldn't take no for an answer, and I didn't really want to hang out today. It's been a bad week, you know?"

Nodding at her, Keiichi gave his assent immediately. "That's fine with me," he agreed, watching her glance at the other people in the area.

As they started walking, he couldn't help but look at her quizzically. "I know it's been a bad week," he said, sympathetically. "Aomori-sensei dying never could make for a good week, and we're all stressed. He's an ass for not taking no for an answer."

Still, there was something confusing him.

"What rumors are you talking about, Kozue-chan?"

An ass for not taking no for an answer? She supposed you could see it that way; although it wasn't like he'd really taken it too far. He hadn't even touched her. But he'd been annoying; Kozue wasn't going to argue the case of someone who'd pretty much called her a cheating slut to the face of a friend whose opinion she actually valued.

(Odd, she realized, that because Keiichi seemed to have a good opinion of her - or be staunchly ignoring all the bad public information - she had come to care about what he thought.)

"What rum-- Oh, you hadn't... you hadn't heard?" She faltered, and she could feel her cheeks start to turn pink. She had to explain it? A rumor that was actually specific enough to make her of all people a bit ashamed? "A rumor that we're dating. Or. Something sort of like that." Of course, from the way she said it, it would be obvious that there was something she wasn't mentioning.

"I don't hear most rumors, to be absolutely honest," Keiichi said. "People talk in the hallways. It doesn't *mean* anything."

Ito tended to be an innocent soul, or at least a very trusting one. Besides, what did he care for gossip? No one he cared about said anything gossipful anyway.

He did, though, blush. Bright red. "What makes them think th--oh." Rumors or no rumors, he wasn't so naive as to not understand the implications of the two of them spending time together in the halls...and his running off of Saito-san. "I get it now. But wait, sort of like that? How can it sort of be like us dating? Wouldn't we be dating or not dating?"

Still bright red. Even brighter now, actually.

Just because nobody he cared about gossiped didn't mean nobody he cared about wasn't gossiped about - and that, at the end of the day, was the more harmful of the two. Case in point. Kozue watched his face turn several shades of red, and sighed. Of course, he had to choose that moment to turn naievete into questioning. Of course.

Kozue lowered her voice even more, as she walked along, looking for less crowded areas, places she'd be less likely to be overheard. "Well, I think the latest version I heard put forth the theory that we're sleeping together." She stopped, and waited for his reaction - and decided that no, she wasn't going to mention the particular act - or the particularly colorful turns of phrase she'd been hearing.

Bright red gave way to maroon.

"I....I...really?" The thought was suddenly being illustrated by his mind's eye, in surround sound and HD. His voice was still quiet, a testament to his self-control, even if he was somewhere between astonished and aroused at the moment.

It wasn't as if he never *thought* about things like that, of course. Like most boys his age, Keiichi's dreams were visited by various girls he knew in various states of undress (after the first day of cooking club he'd had one about Aoi-san in an apron and not much else that had nearly killed him), but somehow...this was different.

He honestly had no idea how to proceed. Keiichi just continued to walk along, looking at her, and hoping this didn't end up any more embarrassing.

She just nodded, and confirmed it quietly. "Yes, really." She wasn't whispering, or hushed, or even particularly ashamed. In fact, for someone talking about rumors about her own sex life, she was remarkably composed, aside from her faint pink blush.

"It's not like it's that hard to believe, is it? I mean, if you didn't know any better. We've been spending time together, and... Well, remember when we went out for coffee?"

She waited, wondering if he would; that was the crux of the actually difficult part of the rumor. (And of course, IN THE BUTT popped into Kozue's brain. Great timing. Just great.)

"I do remember, yes. It was quite nice." Keiichi grinned at her, and then, a bit of information popped into his head. "Wait a sec...when I said it was your first time...someone overheard us and thought we were talking about..." More blushing.

"Obviously, we haven't," Keiichi managed, as if he needed to tell *her* that. "What happened in Paradise was the first time I've even kissed anyone, let alone--"

And in that moment, Keiichi realized that to be one of those things he probably didn't have to have said at the time.

She shook her head, smiling, finally, as he pointed out that no, they weren't having sex. It was adorable that he felt the need to tell her that no, obviously, they hadn't. And then she heard the rest of what he was saying, and the smile faded.

"Wait, the first time you ever kissed anyone? Oh, I was your first kiss, and it was in that place?" She seemed upset, if mildly so. Guilty - that was the best way to describe it. "I'm - Ito-sempai, I'm sorry, I should have asked first. I didn't stop to think that it might have been more important for you."

Keiichi shook his head by way of reply. "It was what we needed to do to move on. I was actually pleasantly surprised. If it was anyone other than us we might have been their for eight years while they complained and tried to reason with the disembodied voice." Yeah, he was still a little bitter about that. It was sort of ridiculous and childish in his view.

Of course, that might have been because the extent of the damage was having his first kiss be orchestrated as part of an odd date-sim.

"Besides, I can't really complain..." Keiichi wasn't especially good at flirting directly. Indirectly he could manage, though, and the smile that he favored with was about as flirtatious as he could manage. Which wasn't much, but still.

"I guess it's like having your first kiss in King's Game, or Truth or Dare," she said, shrugging. Except creepier, of course, but that really didn't need to be said. "Which is perfectly normal."

"Are you upset about your reputation being a little tarnished?" She asked, as they kept walking. Tarnished by association with her, of course; also by that... little thing. Of interesting personal preference.

Now she was fervently hoping that Keiichi didn't ever hear this particular rumor, because boy would he want to know why she'd left that part out.

"What reputation," he asked, and he almost laughed. "You say that like I have a reputation to be proud of. I may not listen to rumors, but I do hear what people say to my face."

What they'd always said to his face. Snide comments about being the (male) leader of the Cooking Club, the worst club in Nanakamado's long illustrious history. Remarks about his sexuality due to his love of the kitchen.

"Considering what I've had said about me in the past, I'd much rather be accused of sleeping with a pretty girl than have my sexual preferences slandered because I run a club."

He thought for a moment. Of course, there was the possibility that she wasn't quite so happy about things, considering he was a beanpole. That, and the whole aforementioned Cooking Club thing. "I'm sorry that it hasn't been an improvement for you," he tried, as it was about the only thing he could think of.

She thought about that for a second - while it wasn't an improvement, it wasn't like one more rumor, true or false, was going to make that much difference in the long run. If there had been any movement, it was more lateral than anything else - just another confirmation of her behavior, her character, all of that.

Outwardly, of course, she wasn't expressing that. Instead, she shook her head: "No, please, don't think of it like that - it's been no inconvenience." Well, yet. "It's just a silly - well, no, it's not that, but it's just a rumor, anyway."

Saying hooking up with you would be silly or, worse, preposterous was definitely a mistake. "And it's definitely not your fault that people overheard us and misinterpreted." A pause. "The date at Chagall, well, maybe less so." It was, after all, naive to think that if anyone had seen them, at a table for two, chatting over shared cake, that they could have interpreted it any differently than as romantic in nature.

Why was this bothering him so much? She was trying to be nice about all of this, and yet he still felt a pang of...something at the use of 'silly.'

The answer was obvious, no matter how much he wanted to pretty it up and obscure it. He liked her. It was probably obvious to her; in his own mind, he was as good at hiding anything as a dinosaur would be.

But then why had she called it a date? This was confusing, and getting moreso by the second. Keiichi wasn't good at any of this, not by a longshot.

Replaying it in his mind...yeah, he could see why people would think that they were on a date.

As they approached the shoe locker, he sighed. "I'm sorry things got all complicated, regardless," he managed, tone of voice slightly sad.

She looked up - it had to be up, since there was over a foot of difference in their heights - and searched Keiichi's face for a moment, when they stopped just before the shoe lockers. He was sad - odd that he had no problem with the rumor, beyond tomato-red blushing and embarrassment, but this was making him sad?

Well, she had said it was 'just a rumor'. Meaning it hadn't happened, and wouldn't. Perhaps he'd hoped it was more like a prediction, and that it would come true?

"Well... would you like to make it less complicated?"

As his gaze met hers, he suddenly felt less sure of himself. She *was* a foot plus shorter than him, but she was more intimidating than she could have known.

Or perhaps she did know, which almost made it worse.

"Less complicated," he asked, not quite knowing whether to be hopeful or not. He never did well with subtleties, much less when he was nervous and oh God she was pretty, and and and his mental processes weren't going so well.

He was adorable. Well, if she kept going like this, she was bound to find out whether or not Keiichi found her attractive - which she was willing to bet that he did, for heaven's sake, he'd said as much, and Keiichi didn't strike her as a polite liar, or a liar at all, really. But she wanted to really know - really, how attractive did he find her?

So, still speaking quietly with her head tilted up and neck craned -- darn it tall boy -- and remarkably shameless, she made the following suggestion:

"We could always make it true. At least then the complication would have been worthwhile."

Lord help him, he almost asked "which rumor?" before getting control of his subconscious mind.

"K-Kozue-chan," Keiichi managed, the sadness gone and replaced with confusion. "Does that mean you'd want to--"

No. For once, he was going to be assertive. He was going to do this right. If he was wrong and she laughed at him, he'd deal with it

"W-would you like to go out with me then, Kozue-chan," he asked, hopefully, and in a quiet enough voice that no one else was going to hear it. He didn't need to be mortified in front of the ENTIRE school. thank you.

It was adorable how she'd been upgraded to Kozue-chan just then. It was also appropriate, yes, but nonetheless cute. She smiled up at him, sweetly, contemplating whether I thought you'd never ask was too mean of a response. Really - she should have known, getting into it with a sweet, naive, chivalrous guy. He wasn't going to be impulsive or aggressive, not like the usual type. And maybe he wouldn't take the joke too well...

"Of course, sempai. And I'm glad you asked." She settled for it, a weaker, kinder version of her first thought. Her eyes brightened a little, with amusement and delight. He did like her. They could date. It'd be fun. It was wonderful. And of course, it'd go down the tubes - they always did, she always wanted them to, in the end - but having a nice guy for once might be really fun while it lasted.

She was glad he asked? And she'd said yes, so that meant that she liked him, and...

Wait. He had a girlfriend now.

The smile on his face was broad, genuine, and might have to be surgically removed. It was sort of like the look in her eyes. Open, seemingly sincere, and happy.

Jumping up and down probably wasn't the proper reaction, so he settled for continuing to smile. "That makes me happy, Kozue-chan," he said, before leaning in to whisper conspiratorially. "May I hug you? I don't think there are too many people around to spread more rumors, well, even if it is actually true now.."

Man up, Keiichi, - that one, she decided to skip. He looked so happy. "You don't - you know - have to ask permission." She stepped a bit closer to him, just as a physical cue, pointing out that it was okay. Really.

"I just wanted to make sure," he insisted, "what with the rumors and all." His tone was almost pouty, though he followed her wishes, letting his arms wrap around her (after bending down considerably to do so).

It would probably been more effective if he'd lifted her up and done one of those twirling hugs he'd always seen in the movies (plus, they'd at least be at eye level), but Nanakamado probably frowned on such things.

"You're soft," he observed. "And cuddly. And...mmm."

That last bit was mental process forcing its way out as conscious speech. Sure, he hugged Misaki a lot, she was a hugging fiend, but there was something entirely different about hugging a girl when you were dating her.

"I'll walk you back to your room," he offered, reaching out to offer his hand to her. Yes, he was looking to get to that all important place known as the batter's box, if we're going to extend the analogy: holding hands.

"Aw, that'd be sweet of you, I'd appreciate it." She could really get used to this chivalry thing. She smiled, and took his hand long enough to squeeze it, before breaking off - "But we do have to put on our shoes first. I'll wait for you on the other side?"

Still amused, she stepped over to the first year shoe lockers, and started the completely mechanical process of switching shoes. This was adorable, but was he going to be awkward, hesitant, and then thrilled about everything? And if he honestly hadn't even kissed a girl before, well, then... They were going to have to go through a long series of awkward-hesitant-ask permission-glee cycles. It was cute now; would it stay that way?

She hopped from foot to foot, getting into her outdoor shoes; there, done.

Keiichi squeezed her hand back, and watched as she walked off towards her shoe locker.

A nice benefit to their newfound arrangement was that Keiichi didn't have to feel guilty about looking at her anymore. Gods, she was pretty.

His outdoor shoes didn't take long to slip on. Keiichi grinned and walked over to the first year shoe lockers after her. "Shall we be off," he asked, reaching down to take her hand.

He, too, could really get used to this.

She let her hand be taken - she was back in passive mode, curious to see where the chivalrous supposed-virgin would lead, unguided. Well, not actually lead, since they were definitely going back to the dorm, but metaphorically speaking. Or whatever.

Now. What did they talk about? Food? Paradise? Their classmates? Their dead gym teacher? Upcoming sports games? What?

"So, sempai, what have you been doing all week?" You know, since we got back and the gym teacher died. That was... opened ended enough, she thought, that maybe he'd offer up something to talk about that she didn't even know he was connected to. Something in common other than Paradise and school.

It felt nice to hold her hand. Sure, the rumor mill would kick up again; but this time the rumors would be true, so what did it really matter?

"Haven't really been able to cook much," he admitted. "We had club, but Sonozaki-san and I were pretty frazzled. Didn't do anywhere near as well as usual. Homework's been piling up too..." Keiichi sighed. Sometimes he wished the world knew everything just so he'd get a break on his damned homework.

"Actually, I've been writing a lot lately," Ito-san finally said. "Poems. Short stories. Nothing great, but it helps me relax a lot."

They soon made their way out of the school, and across the way to the dorms. "What about you, Kozue-chan?"

Technically, the rumors still wouldn't be true, although they'd be more true. Slightly so. It probably wouldn't ever get to be completely and utterly true, because even if Kozue had been interested in that, Keiichi didn't seem like the type of guy... Nah.

"I know what you mean about homework, I'm falling so behind. Which doesn't make sense, since I've had extra free time." She sighed. "And I haven't been exercising, since we haven't had club or gym." Which meant she'd start to gain weight. Or, at least, she'd worry about gaining weight, which was almost as bad.

"You write?" She asked, that bit of his statement finally getting through to her.

"Homework's so...boring compared to everything else," he agreed, as they walked along. "It's harder and harder to do it with so much else on our plates."

The writing thing was a hobby of his. A hobby he was considerably less good at than cooking, but still.

"I wouldn't say I'm especially good at it," Keiichi mused, "but it helps me focus on things when I need to. Clears my head, I guess. Sort of like cooking does, but even better since I don't need to run around finding ingredients."

"Homework is always boring." Kozue interjected - because yes, it always was. And there was really very little point to it; prove you learned something pretty useless, like ancient history, or where the tallest mountain in the solar system was? What possible use could anyone have for that information - unless they were going into that type of career, and then they'd just go to college for it.

"I love grocery shopping, actually, but mostly that's because I like to go to the places with the free samples. Like those Junes chains - they always have the part-timers standing around so you can try a taste of the most expensive stuff." So that you'd buy it, of course - which was why they also had cute part-timers. Kozue imagined it worked really well on lonely housewives; hell, it sometimes worked on her. "But I don't shop there otherwise, of course," she amended, quickly. It was too cheap for her, really. De classé.

"So, what do you write about? What kind of poems?"
