Who: Open.
What: Shadow Encounter.
Where: Noodle Alley.
When: Tuesday, after school.
Why: He fell down the rabbit hole.

Noodle Alley was a street of flavoursome cuisene. Oubai Kouchisei was sitting in the one of the diners. His arms were crossed in contemplation. These weren't restaurants, he'd used to think; they were troughs, places that served food he wouldn't have recognised as proper.

However, he was here.

He was eating a broth that combined thick, curly noodles, miso and oily fish. It had a robust, tangy flavour and included leeks, onions and white pepper, with a topping of sweetcorn and butter. On the counter was a ceramic cup of tea. He thought it was a little like green tea but lighter in taste.

"If you're willing to bother to get me a refill," he said over the counter to the chef, "I've got the money."

Noodle Alley also just happened to be Reizo’s favorite place to get a quick bite to eat after school: some stalls were incredibly cheap, and the people.. Well, they were a generous bunch, usually willing to pay the meager charge of his meal as well. Sometimes some coercion was needed, of course. Salary men were such easy pickings. Most grown men didn’t want to admit they’d been bullied by some snotnosed teenager.

So it was no surprise to the cook of the stall when Reizo sidled up and straddled a seat beside Kou and then ordered whatever he was having.

“Just how much money we talkin’ about here?” He asked, giving the older boy a sidelong glance while he puffed on his cigarette. The chef, all the while, was glaring at the new arrival. Could it be the cigarette, or was it just that Reizo scared off customers?

Kouchisei sighed. It was annoying coming here and not getting the peace and quiet he wanted. He was being helpful though; everyone was leaving 'him' alone. Sadly, it seemed people were uncivil. This alley wasn't a good place to come for privacy.

"My money doesn't concern you, no matter who you are."

He put his leather wallet into the opening in his school bag and zipped it. "Whatever that cigarette is, put it out and stop talking. Unless you've got some god-awful reason for wasting my time."

Reizo cocked an eyebrow at the remark, but remained otherwise silent. He looked almost content to sit there and take long drafts off the cancer stick dangling between his lips. Was this the same kid he’d met in the anti-bullying room? The same kid who’d actually managed to get under his goddamned skin with that one little remark? Well, maybe he’d developed some sort of death wish between now and then.

When the two bowls of ramen were slid in front of the boys, Reizo looked at his for a moment, almost appraisingly, before he put his cigarette out. In Kou’s bowl.

“I didn’t know you were so health conscious, buddy! I hear the soup in ramen is pretty damned good for you.”

He powered Kouchisei’s face into his refilled bowl, malicious grin cutting his face in half.

“Remember to drink it all.”

Ramen. Kouchisei had wanted to lift the bowl to his mouth instead of going to meet it. Lifting his hands to the counter, he was actually slower and weaker and hadn't a chance to avoid being immersed. Kind of. Kouchisei was confronted by a tightening pain as blood pooled all around his nose. Had he broken it? He could feel his heartbeat increase and for a moment thought of someone giving Reizo a blow as good as the one he'd taken. It was an intriguing thought but wasn't one he wished to act on.

Cutting off his breathing momentarily, he lifted his face and spotted Reizo grinning from underneath his sodden fringe. The younger man seemed to be amused by what he'd done, and as Kouchisei calmly removed his glasses from his ramen he wiped them with the edge of his serviette.

"I understand only animals have a need to fight," he said. Putting on his glasses, he spoke calmly. "I'm assuming you don't have relations in the Congalese jungle. Please prove me wrong."

The large delinquent stared at the boy nonplussed. He’d dealt with these sort of guys before and they never failed to amuse him. Intellectual superiority was a fine last bastion for the ego, but it did little to keep them out of harm’s way or their dignity intact. It would probably be even worse for this guy when he realized the guy he was trying to pull it on was next in line on leaning on his family for ‘protection’ fees.

He shook his head at the thought and sat back down, taking up his utensils and digging into his unspoiled ramen.

“Apex predators usually don’t have to prove anything.”

Standing up, Kou looked down at Reizo. He knew it could be seen as a challenge, but he'd learned adults weren't scared. Intelligence was superior to strength, because a small army could hold off a siege force with the right technology - which would've needed intelligence to design. Intelligence. Strategy. How could this hot-tempered imbeciele have either?

He looked at him a bit more curiously and then reached down, picking up his bag and slinging it over his shoulder. He turned to the counter and handed his money to the chef.

"... The noise put me off my food. Disappointing. I'm just going to go elsewhere for more intelligent conversation."

He then attempted to leave.

He narrowed his eyes, watching the older boy go. He felt the strange urge to call out to him, taunt him some more. Maybe ask why he’d suddenly grown a pair. Instead, he turned back to the ramen and grinned at the chef, jerking his head in the direction Kouchisei had just left in.

“He said to put it on his tab. What a pal, huh?”

He frowned afterwards. That encounter, while a great display of just what a badass Reizo was, if he did say so himself, just didn’t sit right to him. The more and more he thought about it, the stranger it was, and the more he wanted to go find the little snot and beat the attitude out of him, well, after getting why it was there anyway.

He pushed away from the now-cold noodles he’d been picking at and stalked off in the opposite direction. Probably not a good idea to haul off and get assault charges pressed on him. He’d go find some thugs from another school and take his frustration out on them.

Misaki had been walking home by her self. The late night air gave her a chill but she didn't want to bother her parents. She'd been at the library that afternoon trying to figure out some homework for English. She was wondering what they had had for dinner that everning and found herself suddenly lost due to her day dreaming.

"Ah...Ah...where am I?" she wondered and headed down Noodle Alley. All the food there smelled lovely, but she wasn't sure she had enough money to get it. "I wonder if I can find my way back home."

Kouchisei left the diner, glancing at his jacket. The noodles had been washed off in the bathroom but he lacked any scent to hide the smell till he went to the convenience store. Also, he didn't understand why people were so objectionable. It was stupid, because they were the ones who told him to change. People had told him he was too serious, uptight, posh, cold, quiet, stoic and anti-social. But he had changed his life. Why couldn't people see that?

He walked past Misaki in the street and headed in the opposite direction.

"Huh..." she noticed him at once and smiled cheerfully, "Oubai-senpai! Wait please."

Misaki hurried up to him and bowed some, smiling happily. Someone that she knew, she was relieved, "I'm so glad to see you! Do you think I could walk with you please. I'm a bit lost here and I don't know which way to get back to my house. I'm sorry for bothering you like this."

She paused and sniffed some, "Are you okay? You smell like ramen. Did something happen?"

Sighing, Kou cast his gaze around the street, seeing if there was any way out. He was building himself a nice new life; different food, new locations. He was thinking about how good it would be to break this cycle he was in.

"Shut up, Misaki," he said.

"Eh, Oubai-senpai...are...are you feeling okay?" she asked politely. Was he hurt or something. This wasn't like the boy she had met earlier when she had given him the water lilies. "You...you don't seem like yourself. Was the food any um good?"

"You are relentless in trying to corner me when I want to leave, so I solemnly just advise this... leave me in peace." Kou raised a finger. "It's about time I started doing something to change myself, and I don't need you pulling me down. You're just my kohai, remember it."

Misaki looked at him with wide eyes. How could this be the same person that not too long ago helped her out. She bit her lip some and her bag slipped down to the ground, "But...But Oubai-senpai. I...I thought...You said you liked the water lilies and...I...how....why..."

Hot tear leaked into the corner of her eyes, she shook her head and shouted out, "Oubai Senpai, Please. I just want to go home. Can't you please just help me a little..."

Misaki covered her mouth and looked down, "I...I know I'm your Kohai, but...I thought...that maybe we...we could be friends...that's all. I...I thought you liked the flowers..."

"They're nothing that concerns you," Kou said, not looking at her. He adjusted the bag over his shoulder and remembered he had tennis practice. "Just go. Your incessant chatter is annoying."

He let out a low aggravated sigh. She'd ruined his meal, and he'd just wanted to sit down for a quiet meal without anybody from that school reminding him of the cycle he was stuck in. If he made friends, he decided whether they were of use or not in breaking free. This one was too kind. She wouldn't bring him anything new.

Misaki turned then and clenched her fists. She wouldn't cry, no matter how mean he was to her. She wouldn't cry in front of him. She just couldn't.

"All...Alright Oubai-senpai. I'll go...Just...I just wish we could have been friends." Misaki turned to leave then and looked around for where she was. She hated feeling lost like this.
