Who: Kiyoshi and Kiriko
What: Getting lost in the woods
Where: THEY DON'T KNOW ;_;
When: School trip, the hike
Why: Because Kiyoshi has no sense of direction

The school hike had, on paper, seemed like a wonderful idea to Kiyoshi. Each class would split up into randomly-assigned pairs, ensuring that nobody was left out (which was of course a great selling point from his perspective), and the pairs would wander around from lunchtime to dinnertime at their own pace, enjoying the nature trails and taking in the scenic natural beauty of the area. Being paired with Kiriko had seemed like a stroke of luck, considering that she seemed like she'd be more or less willing to ignore him for the duration of the hike.

The reality of the class hike was decidedly less pleasant. It was hot, it was sticky, the long grass was making his legs itch, and, while he'd decided early on that he was not going to whine and complain no matter what happened, he was pretty sure that they'd lost the trail about two hours ago. But the fact that he'd managed to drop their map into the river they'd crossed about fifteen minutes into the trip probably had something to do with that, so he decided that it would be prudent not to mention it if at all possible.

"Can we go back now?" she asked a little sharply, pushing her hair back away from her face. She hadn't bothered to check the weather this morning, or else she might have put her hair back and dressed a little more appropriately. She'd spent the whole day jerking her sleeves irritably up to her elbow and surreptitiously rolling her skirt up past the minimum standard length in a futile attempt to cool down. She'd stepped in something wet and unpleasant towards the middle of the hike and one of her socks was completely soaked, and she was trying hard, ever so hard, not to take it out on her innocent hiking companion. The result of this was that she'd barely said two words to Kiyoshi the whole way and had completely missed when he'd dropped the map earlier.

"You know which way you're going, right?"

"I, uh. I." Well, aside from the missing map thing and the complete lack of a trail, neither of which he strictly needed to point out if she hadn't noticed them already, he supposed that the situation was under control. He nodded.

"Yeah, let's head back, um..." Where had they come through again? That tree with the vine creeping up it looked familiar, but then, they'd passed an awful lot of trees in the last two hours. "Uh, let's go this way," he suggested, gesturing in a direction that at least seemed like it might lead them back onto the beaten path.

He briefly considered confessing that he'd lost the map, then shoved the idea aside. The forest was crisscrossed by branching nature trails, and it was likely that they'd find one of the paths if they just walked in the same direction for few minutes. Unless they'd already wandered past all the trails and they were just wandering further and further into the wilderness to die and— He pushed the thought to the back of his mind. Kicking up a fuss when they weren't that lost would just cause them both unnecessary stress, and that went double for mentioning where the map had gone. Faking confidence to the best of his ability, he set off towards what he fervently hoped was their camp site.

Kiriko did not immediately followed him, but rather leveled his back with a very suspicious look.

"Why don't you check the map?" she asked, starting after him. She didn't really know Kiyoshi that well, but he seemed the kind of mousey kid who'd be nervously consulting his map every three minutes. Come to think of it, she hadn't seen the map in a while... Not since before she stepped in something near the river. Her eyes narrowed further.

"Uh, the map?"

Kiyoshi weighed his options in order of most to least likely to be met an angry diatribe beginning with "YOU LOST THE MAP!?" or an equivalent phrase.

#1. Pretend that he totally had the map, he just didn't want to get it out of his pocket because he was too cool.
Chances of failure: 95% or higher

#2. Concoct an elaborate story about how the map had been stolen by a devious-looking squirrel while she hadn't been looking.
Chances of failure: 80%, there was no telling with the wildlife around here.

#3. Admit that he'd lost the map, then proceed to grovel at her feet.
Chances of failure: 60%, she seemed like the type to be disgusted by the begging.

#4. Admit that he'd lost the map, then try to play up the fact that they could probably find civilization if they walked far enough in a single direction.
Chances of failure: 50% or lower, logic seemed like his best bet.

After agonizing over his choices just long enough for an awkward silence to settle in, Kiyoshi resigned himself to the fact that the odds weren't likely to get any better than that.

"Uh, the map. It, um, fell." Wince. "I tripped back when we were crossing the river and itslippedoutofmyhands," he managed, all in one breath, then lost his nerve to continue - damage control seemed like it would just come out sounding flimsy, given that he'd lost the map. In retrospect, maybe he should've tried that idea about the squirrel.

She was quiet for a few moments. She folded her arms over her chest and stared hard at Kiyoshi for a few moments, her expression completely unreadable... at least until her eyes narrowed to slits.

"You lost the map?" She hissed rather than shouted, but the sibilance of the statement seemed somehow infinitely more dangerous than raised volume might have. She unfolded her arms as she took a step towards him, and had to fight very hard to keep her hands from involuntarily reaching out to grab him and throttle the living daylights out of her obviously unreliable companion.

"What are you good for?!" she snapped. "I thought you only looked like that because you were smart, but you haven't even got that going for you?! Useless!"

Rather than seizing him around the neck, she shoved him out of the way to get a look at the small sliver of wilderness that he'd previously been obscuring. Unfortunately, he was not hiding the magical trail back to camp, and so she rounded on him moments later.

"Get us back to camp. Now."
