Who: Shiori + Kiriko
What: A picture and a conversation.
Where: School
When: Monday after school
Why: Shiori's looking for an honest opinion, and who better to ask than someone she doesn't know?

It wasn't uncommon for Shiori to be one of the last to leave the school. Though usually she had to stay for detention, she was known to stay on occasion in order to finish a picture she had started in class. It was no surprise why her grades were as low as they were, but it was no surprise either that her work was rather impressive either from how much time she spent drawing. This Monday was one such case. Sitting in the first year's hall for no reason other than it was the bottom floor, Shiori sat on the floor with her back to the wall and legs propped slightly. She was one of the few female students that wore pants rather than skirts (after last year's many incidents, she found it easier to follow the dress code by wearing pants), and so was at no risk of someone seeing anything he or she shouldn't. A pair of headphones sat on her head, a steady beat that could barely be heard by a passerby playing.

Next to her was her bag with a small pile of pens atop it, all the same color and brand. Her newest picture was one she had done in pen, and rather than differing it with a different kind of pen had used one she had multiples of. Though by the time she finished the picture, she may not have many more left. Her mom would be so mad at her for using up so many so quickly again...

Nearly finished with her picture of a young boy holding a snake to his already bitten, scratched, and bruised arm, Shiori failed to notice how late it was starting to get. Activities were coming to an end, meaning the school would be shut down for the night as well. Still, she was determined to finish and maybe even get feedback.

And, finally - miraculously - she finished after a while longer. By now, activities had ended, and as Shiori gathered her pens and placed them in the bag she kept an eye out for someone to get an opinion from. It had to be someone she didn't know, or else she wouldn't get honest feedback. But who to ask...

Spotting a girl coming her way, Shiori stood quickly and waved the girl over.

"Hey, can I ask you something really quick?" she asked, holding the picture out in front of her. "I'm not sure about the anatomy - does it look right to you?"

With a small sigh, Kiriko shut the door to the now-empty classroom behind her, tucking her notebook into her satchel. When asked why she was staying late by her classmates, she had firmly answered "important school business," but that was a lie - the schedule for flower arranging club she'd been drafting was finished in five minutes and she'd spent the rest of the time scribbling notes and ideas to herself. The classrooms were quieter than the dorms at this time of day and she had wanted a place where she could actually hear herself think.

She was a little surprised to be intercepted by Shiori, who she hadn't noticed at first. A curious expression on her face, she answered with a nod and took the picture in her hands for closer inspection.

A rather strange expression came unbidden over Kiriko's face.

"Is that a..." she squinted, but didn't finish her sentence. Furtively, she glanced over the top of the picture to its author. Cute little thing, didn't look too disturbed. Probably just one of those artists. Was art even supposed to represent anything these days? Maybe it was some kind of illustration.

Mentally, she shook herself, checking over the anatomy this time.

"I think the neck is a bit too long," she answered, handing the drawing back. "Can I ask what it is?"

Shiori took the picture back, looking at the neck critically. The girl did have a point; she had been so focused on shadowing that she had made the neck a little too long. Wrinkling her nose, she shut the cover of her sketchbook. It was just one more thing she had to work on, it seemed. But it never hurt to find things she could improve on - in the end, it only benefited her.

Still, though, she felt a bit stupid when she began to explain the picture. The reasoning probably only made sense to her, or seemed normal to her anyway - she was sure that once she began to explain it, the girl would look at her oddly and make up some excuse to leave. But Shiori was the one who asked for an opinion; she wouldn't become cowed just because the girl wanted to know what it was.

So she smiled brightly, cradling the book in her arms.

"A desperate attempt for a little adventure," she said. "He's looking for a thrill in all the places a normal person wouldn't think of. Though that probably doesn't reflect well on me for thinking it up, haha."

Laughing, she rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly before letting the hand drop.

"Thank you though!" she exclaimed. "You've been a big help, seriously. If you ever need anything, let me know!"

"'A desperate attempt for adventure'," she repeated quietly. "Is that the title?

Kiriko paid no mind to the nervous gesture, her eyes fixed instead on the book in Shiori's arms.

"Actually, you're a pretty good artist. Do you have any other drawings with you that I could see?"

At that, she looked back up to the girl's face with some scrutiny. She couldn't place it as belonging to anyone in her class.

"You're not a first year, are you?"

Raising a hand to tap a finger on her chin thoughtfully, Shiori hummed to herself.

"Maybe? I never think of titles, really. I'm terrible at naming things!" Shiori mused. The pictures with titles were ones she submitted into a contest, and were usually thought up last minute with little thought put into them. It was a bad habit for sure, since a title did play a big role in explaining a picture, but it just seemed so insignificant compared to the actual work. She wanted people to judge her on her talent, not on her diction.

Perking up when the girl asked if Shiori had any other drawings, Shiori handed the girl her sketchbook. She hated the idea of people thinking she was just fishing for compliments - especially when she preferred constructive criticism better - but why hide and act bashful if people wanted to look? They asked on their own accord, not hers.

"I do a lot of it in school, so ignore the random notes in the corners and that. They're not part of the picture," Shiori explained, adjusting the strap of her shoulder bag and causing the multitude of pins aligned on it to jingle against each other quietly at the movement.

"I'm a second year," Shiori replied when the girl observed she wasn't a first year. "My name is Wakanata Shiori. And yours?"

"Ikeda Kiriko," she responded distractedly, turning slowly through the pages. She really was quite good. Come to think of it, she remembered hearing something about a new art student...

"Are you one of the students here on a scholarship?"

A lot of the drawings were still markedly weird, though some of it was familiar and recognizeable. Better than those jackson pollock types, she supposed. Handing the book back, she looked up to Shiori again.

"I like your hair clip, by the way," she added casually, remembering a similar one sitting on her dresser at home.

"Oh, no. I've been going to Nanakamodo my whole life," Shiori explained. "Even if I had a scholarship, I probably would have lost it last year. I'm not really a model student, eheh..."

She trailed off, raising a hand to play with her hair idly. Her grades weren't the lowest in the class; perhaps the lower side of the average scale, but not terrible. Compared to her brother, who had achieved near perfect marks while attending school here, she might as well have been getting F's. That's the way her parents made it sound, anyway. It was such a pain, she thought to herself as she fiddled with her oval-shaped hair clip. It was bright orange and stood out rather obnoxiously against her dark hair, but Shiori loved it anyway.

Accepting her book when Ikeda-san handed it back, Shiori blinked in surprise when she complimented her on the clip. Smiling brightly, Shiori took note of Ikeda-san's own clip.

"Yours is really cool too!" Shiori said, taking a step closer to see it better. It looked way fancier than her own plastic one. But it was really pretty, too.

She answered the compliment with a smile. She wasn't sure if Shiori meant it or was just being nice, but it didn't particularly matter to her - she had a strange fondness for the things, in the same way one often saw single urban women on TV go after shoes. She tended to notice other's and was never unhappy to have her own be noticed in kind.

"Thanks. I've got to get going now, though. Maybe I'll see you around, Wakanata-san?"
