Kai wasn't sure what everyone liked, so he'd made and brought four lunches - two very plain ones, and two slightly more varied ones. Had to please people, no?

He'd found Yoshimi's apartment with relative ease, and knocked on the door, hoping someone would answer soon given he'd forgotten his gloves and walking without them in winter hadn't been wise.

Paradise, it seemed, hadn't done too much to dampen Yoshimi's spirits, and after a muffled "I'll get it!" and the thump-squeak-thump of sneakers on linoleum, the front door swung open.

"Oh, Yamada-senpai! I'm glad you could make it." She smiled as easily as she could, strongly aware that she'd never really done this before, never had anyone over for something normal. Porn exchange? No problem. One-night stand? Business as usual. Lunch with a teammate? Panic mode.

"The living room's kind of a disaster area right now, but come in!"

"Heeeeeyyy," Kai said, smiling back. Yoshimi looked really cheerful, but he wondered how much she was really recovering. He was definitely no stranger to the Fake Smile(TM), and she'd tackled some big things in her place.

Still, he was here to help! And he had jelly to assist him!

"Oh, it's fine - my house is always a mess," he said lightly as he came inside. Once in, he looked around for a place to set the food - "Oh, hey, where can I put these? Do you wanna eat now or save them for later?"

Standing there in her living room, he felt awkward. It occurred to him he'd never been inside of a teammate's house before, nor had he ever visited someone else so soon after their place in Paradise. How did you ask, 'Hey, so you're over your mortality complex, right?'

"How do you feel?"

"Oh, geez, let me clear off the coffee table for you," Yoshimi offered, breezing past the maze of packing crates and half-full cardboard boxes scattered between the door and the sitting area. "I'm just a little peckish, so I could go either way right now. Are you hungry?"

She busied herself with clearing off the table while she waited for Kai's answer. Simple little questions, simple little chores - she'd been grateful for any distractions since her stay in Paradise, focusing on the manageable things so as not to get swallowed up again by the huge ones.

"I..." Her hands stilled for a moment. How did she feel? 'How are you doing?' she could answer easily - it lent itself to evasive answers about the weather or her last math test. But this was more direct, which meant that it deserved a more direct answer, by her reasoning. "I feel a lot of different ways right now. Sad, sometimes. But not always. It's all a lot to take in, you know?"

"No, I'm fine, I made all of these for you and your sister!" Kai said as he set the meals down on the table.

Yoshi's answer struck close to his heart. "I know what you mean. After I went in, I just sort of...did anything to avoid having to think about it. Like cutting out the pattern for an Alice-chan dress.

"I think you start out being...vulnerable, like you just want to crawl in a hole and sleep for days. Then sad and scared. Then...I don't know, right now I just feel sort of 'nothing' about the whole deal, you know?"

He looked pensive. It was the first time he'd realized that he was talking about Paradise and not a trace of fear was there, twisting his insides into knots.

"So you won't always be sad, at least."
