Who: Toru and Kiriko
What:A meeting in Matsuri
Where: Matsuri Online, Orochi server, Babyl City
When: Shortly before Christmas
Why:Closure.

Toru didn't log in as Kurama Tengu often. He was at the level cap, had the best equipment and customization possible for a Dragoon of his level, and was therefore rarely needed. Sometimes he'd have to help a guild-mate out, or participate in a new event, or grind for the rarer achievements, but that wasn't too often.

The other reason that Toru didn't like using Kurama Tengu was the reputation. First to hit the level cap, before the game was even out of beta. A noteworthy character who by all accounts was a champion among champions in the game, a participant and winner in major events, owner of rare and obscure items and titles. Kurama Tengu was a character who made quests his bitch and made Toru proud. This also meant that essentially everyone on the server knew exactly who he was. Within the first five minutes, he'd received over ten invitations to join parties and fourteen trade requests from overeager newbies. To the latter group he was at least willing to give up a handful of lesser items. But they weren't who he was looking for.

Twenty minutes prior, the real-life Toru Ishinomori had sent an email to Kiriko Ikeda in the hopes she would respond. So that Toru could get this over with. Now he sat at his desk, face propped up on his palm as his armored, red-headed avatar sat conspicuously in front of Babyl City's central fountain. Chat bubbles surrounded him like a flock of errant printer paper.

Isn't that the guy who hit the level cap in the beta?

He must be a beast in PvP.

lol, he has no life

what kind of guy has the time to get that strong in an MMO so quickly?

Is he afk? He's just sitting there...

But he waited still. Kiriko had yet to arrive.

sierramist has invited you to join their party!

hey ishinomori-kun.

The reasonably-leveled male hunter belonging to Kiriko popped out of the ether and emoted a wave.

what did you need?

Kurama Tengu has accepted your party invitation!

there you are, ikeda-san.

Toru's Dragoon waved back, and walked to stand by Kiriko's hunter.

it shouldn't too long.

Kurama Tengu has invited you to trade with them!

just extras from farming, huh?

wait, what the...

The real-life Kiriko frowned as the trade screen filled with dozens of epic items and enough gold to buy out the entire auction house. She caught on quick, the fact that the armor was disappearing from Kurama Tengu's sprite only helping her along.

ishinomori-kun, are you sure about this?

The items implacably dropped into the trade window without so much as a comment from Toru. Over half a year's worth of epics changed hands without so much as peep from the soon-to-be-former owner.

Behind the monitor, the real owner's hand trembled briefly before clicking to confirm the trade on his side.

my mind's been made up for a while now. this way, i don't have anything to tie me to this game.

For the first time since his creation, Kurama Tengu stood naked and penniless in the domain he called home. Bystanders snidely asked if he thought Orochi was an RP server, or if Cielo had hacked him. Toru sat staring at this tableau almost wistfully.

i guess i should make a speech or something, but idk what i'd say. this is my last day in matsuri. it's not my life anymore. i have to do important shit now, more than ever before.

i hope you get some mileage out of the gear :)

Kiriko had momentarily stopped appraising the items, working out how high she could sell them at the AH (or through the internet to Toru-like addicts), and focused instead on what she was reading. She couldn't help a small smile - what a long way to come in just a year.

good luck out there, ishinomori-kun.

thanks, ikeda-san.

The last thing Kurama Tengu did before he was logged out for good was the /wave emote. It was silly, an awkward gesture, surely meaningless to anybody else. Just something Toru jokingly did to say "goodbye" to Matsuri Online. It wasn't until he felt the tickle of a drop of water at his throat that he noticed he was actually crying a little.

Kurama Tengu has logged out of the game.
