Who: Kiriko and Reizo
What: Christmasing
Where: His apartment
When: Christmas Eve
Why: Because couples do that shit idk

The night around them lay, for something deep in the heart of a city, still and quiet. The holiday season had invaded, bringing with it a sense of merry delight that swelled and swelled as more days passed, and for many, tonight it had finally exploded into loud celebrations, parties and dances and mixers and gatherings with friends. You'd have expected one hardline criminal and his nearly-there girlfriend to join in that revel, but they were spending the evening alone, stowed away in the gently lit cavern of Reizo's apartment.

Reizo's long legs were stretched out onto the coffee table, one arm threaded around Kiriko's shoulders, head tipped back and lips pursed to blow out impressively compact smoke rings that faded away into misty oblivion before they could collide with the ceiling. A red Santa Claus hat sat atop his head, the puffball at the tip hanging as rakishly as it could across one of his eyes.

A few moments of silence floated by, and quite a few more smoke rings, before he tipped his head and looked at her, the puff ball swaying from the movement of his head.

“You brought the cake, how come you haven't eaten any of it?”

One of his eyebrows twitched. He knew it was a joke, but it was christmas and .. argh, girls.

He shook his head and slipped his arm out from around her to lean over towards the table himself, where he stole her piece of cake and promptly ate it. He didn't eat cake much, though he wasn't sure why – there was a nagging thought in the back of his head that had something to do with his grandfather – but he knew that he resented the size of them. It really sucked being a big, quarter German dude in such a teeny, tiny country sometimes.

“I dunno,” he said, punching his cigarette into the ashtray to put it out, and then helping himself to nearly half the cake. “Yakuza marriage is pretty serious shit, and getting married to someone when you know divorce is eminent ain't really in line with it.”

"Lame," she answered, in the same tone he usually used for "gay." Her plate now emptied courtesy of Reizo, she pulled the cake towards them both and took another small piece for herself. "I figured, though. Yakuza anything is serious shit."

She leaned back, pulling her feet up on the couch and tucking them beneath her. Thinking it was probably better not to linger on that thought, she continued.

"But who knows where we'll be at 24, anyway."

"I'm sure you'll be terrorizing some board as a CEO or well on your way," he said, half-distracted and half-muffled by all the cake he was managing to shovel into his mouth.

It took him a few mouthfuls of cake before he spoke again.

"As for me, well.." There was a hint of something weary in his voice for a moment, but after another forkful of cake it was gone. "Well, I'll be ruling the underbelly of Japan."

"Naturally," she responded, watching him with open affection - the deadly, scarred yakuza shovelling cake into his mouth.

Not that the comment about terrorizing board rooms hadn't warmed her over as well.

"Ruling, iron-fisted and cold-blooded." She had a hand to her mouth, but her smile peeked through her fingers. "And well-fed."

She'd caught the fleeting tone, but all things considered, it was an improvement - broaching the topic in the past had brought dour moods and stormclouds (and of course a trip to "Paradise" no one could ever forget). Talking about the future, it was bound to come up, even if she had only meant to air some of her own residual insecurities; she was just pleased to see it didn't have to end in moodiness.

There was a bit of a lilt in her voice when she continued, leaning heavily into his shoulder and staring ponderously back at the ceiling.

"Hmmm, wonder if you'll ever stop to think about me?"
