Who: Toru and Yoshimi
What: A mystery!
Where: Yoshimi's room in the ski lodge
When: After the power outage.
Why: She said she had something to give him.

The text Yoshimi had sent put Toru on edge. Not even for a good reason- he just felt weird about such ambiguous messages being sent to him. It was mostly that the last time... well, the last time he'd done this, the package Kaz entrusted him with was what ended up ending their relationship.

Nervously, he approached his classmate's room and knocked on the door.

Toru was mildly surprised to see Yoshimi this worn out on a vacation day, rather than a Monday morning, but didn't let it show. He was just stopping by for a short visit, not interrogating her on her life details.

"Nah, it's fine. I can afford to miss a few ghost stories."

He entered the room, noted the de-quilted bed, and took a seat in an armchair. There was a moment of uncomfortable fidgeting that ended in him crossing his legs, long and awkward as they were.

"I-I guess..." Things being easier to say had never really been the case for him at any point. "But anyway... what's up? You said you had to give me something, right?"

Yoshimi just nodded blithely, as oblivious as ever when it came to other people’s problems.

“I’m going to need someone to pet-sit for me.” The reason why didn’t seem to strike her as necessary information, and she kept her tone light and measured while she flopped onto the closest bed. “It wouldn’t be anything hard, I promise – just stopping by my place to check up on Jiro. I wrote up instructions and everything.”

It took conscious effort not to retreat further into her blanket fort at the thought of having to resort to any of her backup options. She had no intention of involving her family, she was hardly close enough to most of her weekend following to ask favors of them, Shirou was too easily-distracted for her to have any confidence in him, Shingo had been dead for the better part of a year, and the realization that Tom probably had the best balance of diligence and pet expertise out of the rest of her teammates was just plain degrading.

“…please say you can.”

"Pet-sit? Oh, right..." It took Toru a moment to recall that Yoshi was the proud owner of a ferret. "I think I can manage, so long as there are instructions... and directions to your place."

The task itself sounded easy enough, and really no trouble to take care of. What interested Toru more was the fact that Yoshimi needed him to take care of her pet at all. She seemed very nervous, and almost small in her nest of blankets. "Can I ask why I'll be taking care of Jiro? Are you going on a trip or something?"

His hands fluttered awkwardly as he clarified. "Like I said, I can take care of him. It just... seems like a weird time to be asking, is all."

"A trip? I guess you could say that." Yoshimi's tone was the same one that she would use in saying that you could classify the Anti-Bullying Club as a demanding extracurricular activity - it was true enough, but only if you tilted your head and looked at it from a certain angle. "If I knew just when I'd be gone, I could just hire someone to come by on the right days, but..."

She sighed, too exhausted to put any more effort into not looking exhausted, especially after the turn that Truth or Dare had taken. There was no point in avoiding Toru's question, she knew; she'd been ready for it to begin with, but having to abandon the I'm just busy, don't mind me, everything's copacetic here in Yoshi-land pretense left her feeling just the tiniest bit defeated.

"Well... you've noticed that almost everyone's faced their Shadow by now, right? There's only two of us who haven't." That she was included among them seemed to go without saying, but her expression didn't betray much about her feelings on the matter. "I don't know when my number's going to come up, but it's got to be soon, don't you think? So I wanted to make sure Jiro would be okay."

Toru eyed Yoshimi critically as she spoke. If she knew when she'd be gone? I guess she's more scatterbrained than I gave her credit for, huh... Or is it something else? To be fair, both possibilities were worrisome in their own right.

Rather than ask anything, he scratched at the back of his neck rather sheepishly. No need to put the spotlight on her when she was obviously uncomfortable already. It was only when Yoshimi continued that he felt alright with speaking.

"Oh, yeah, you and... uh..." Toru mentally went down a list of teammates. "Kanaye never went, right? But he also moved away..." After a moment his memory cooperated. "Oh, you meant Shimohama-senpai and you. That's..."

He gulped. "You really think you're going to get captured? I mean, if it's just down to you two, don't you think we could stage an intervention at this point?" Backpedaling a bit, he stumbled over his words.

"I-I mean, yeah, it's smart to set up a petsitter if you think this is going to happen, b-but... if we're preparing here, why don't we set it up so you don't go in there in the first place!"
