Who: Reizo, Kiriko
What: Post-dungeon intercept!
When: Right after they get out of Kai's dungeon.
Where: Near the school, outside somewhere.
Why: Because it's someone's ~special day~

"Hey, birthday boy!" Kiriko called to catch Reizo's attention, jogging up to him. The crunch of her boots in the snow had announced her before she announced herself. "Wait up!"

The team had mostly split up to go their separate ways, and they were alone now, or at least out of earshot, on Nanakamado grounds. Outside was chilly and snowy, quite the contrast to the warm beach they'd been introduced to in Kai's mind, and Kiriko was out of the bikini and back in her winter jacket with a scarf tied around her neck and her hands joined behind her back.

"You've got plans for tomorrow, right?"

Reizo turned when Kiriko called for him. His face was hidden in the deep shadow of the dark hoodie he wore, but the somber red glow of his lit cigarette licked at the edges of his features. His big hands were stuffed down into the pockets on the belly of his shirt, and his broad shoulders were slumped, his posture lazy and threatening – the norm for him.

“Dunno,” he answered truthfully. He hadn't given his birthday much thought. His mom would want to see him at some point of the day, but beyond that everything was uncertain. He stomped his heavy boots in the snow to ward off the cold, and exhaled. His breath came out in a cloud, threaded with the smoke of his cigarette. "Probably gonna get dragged to dinner with my mom."

"Hmmm. Figured you might be busy tomorrow."

She looked skyward, briefly, at the fat flakes raining slow and sparse down from the darkness above. Her eyes soon turned back to him, head canting to try to see him better from under the hoodie. With a wave of her hand, she started walking again, slowly and with intent for him to start walking abreast.

"Had your eye on anything special?"

He didn't take up walking with her immediately. Instead he hunkered down further in his hoodie, hiding the burning sniper's tip of his cigarette away in the gloom and from the snow, and considered her question. It was hard to go wanting for much when you were the heir to the strongest criminal organization in the subprefecture.

“Some territory,” he told he in all seriousness. “I got this one group that won't give up no matter what we seem to do to 'em.” He was, of course, referring to his bike gang activities and not anything yakuza related. He let out a tired sigh and straightened up. It wasn't the easiest thing to walk like a yakuza, legs bowed apart, in the slippery footing of snow.

He came to a stop not far from where they'd started walking together. It was the closest spot to the dorms, and where she'd break off from him if she was going home for the night. He faced her, looking up from her only occasionally to glance at their other retreating teammates, and canted his head to one side, a small clump of cigarette ash falling off his cigarette and tumbling down the dirty the pristine snow below.

“Don't suppose you could loan me a few goons you have lying around.”

"'Fraid I can't help you there," she answered with an easy smile. "Unless you need teenage girls who know how to work the grapevine."

It was her turn to stamp her feet and exhale a few cloudy breaths. She looked thoughtfully over to the dorms, then down to the bag at her hip, one gloved hand diving in and rifling around inside of it.

"Well, it's not territory, but I got you something anyway."

She held out a small box to him, wrapped in plain red.

“Yeah, figures. Should've asked Kondo, I guess,” he told her, tone tinted with gentle and genuine humor.

He frowned gently at her when she began rooting around in her bag, and it was a beat before he took the present she offered him. His brows furrowed as he stared down at the sharp red wrapping paper, and he considered whether opening it out here in the snow was rude or not. Well, he'd never really cared about being rude before..

He unwrapped it surprisingly well, and flipped it open, and went silent.

“This must've cost you a pretty penny,” he said, reaching in to pull the item out, where it seemed to glisten in the moonlight. He peered at the engraving on the front of it, and his eyebrows rose in surprise.

“And here I was just getting used to the cheap, disposable kind.”

"Probably not much more than you spent on my birthday." She smirked, recalling that she'd never wheedled the pricetag out of him that time. "Yeah, did you lose your old one? Well, hopefully this is better."

The lighter she'd bought him was a handsome pewter flip-top with some weight to it. The outline of a stylized wolf, resembling the one on his back, was engraved across the face. 白井 雷三 was engraved across the bottom.

"Maybe not the best choice," she admitted a little self-consciously, referring to the wolf, "But it looked like the one you already had."

He let out a grunt. He was obviously not going to get the price out of her, and that was fair in a way, but as far as he knew she wasn't rolling in it anymore. Granted, most of her dorm room had been paid for by him by ways of apology for what had happened in his dungeon, but.. still, modern princesses needed money.

He flicked it open experimentally, and the corners of his lips turned up into a small smile at the nostalgic sound of a flip-top lighter being opened. Not many knew the only reason he preferred the things were because of his father, and not many ever would, so the sad smile was likely more than a little puzzling to the girl standing in front of him.

“Thanks,” he told her with a nod, and he flicked the thing to life, adjusted the length of the flame with a practiced twitch of his fingers, and lit a new cigarette with it. The lighter clanked closed with a jerk of his wrist, and he looked at her over the shining red end of his cigarette, and rocked gently on the balls of his feet.

“You going to your room?”

She watched him as he played with the new toy, curious and trying to parse his reaction. He seemed to like it, but there was something else there she couldn't quite grasp. He certainly seemed a lot more contemplative about it than she had anticipated.

"I was going to," she said with a small, indifferent shrug. "Unless you think there's somewhere else I should be."

He looked at her openly, head tilting right and left, and then he glanced back over his shoulder in the general direction of his apartment.

“Well, I got some leftovers I need help getting rid of.”

A snort.

He nodded then, looked around, and upon finding no one staring at them or even near them, draped one long arm over her thin shoulders and guided her off in the direction of his apartment.

“You know, wolves and foxes are from the same family."

"Are they now," she said, equal parts amused and sarcastic. "Not too closely related, I hope."

She leaned into the crook of his arm and slid one of her own around his back as they walked off to his apartment together.
