WHO: Renju and Reizo
WHAT: Picking
WHERE: Butterfly room
WHEN: ???
WHY: Because Reizo is bored and Renju is there.

It was a cold and overcast day. The worst sort.

The temperature was really starting to drop now. The cold had crept in slowly over the past two months, the warm dying off, usurped by a bracing cold that invigorated some people as well as the sun, but today the cold had grown claws and even Reizo had been forced into a long-sleeved hoodie. It had also sucked a lot of the willpower out of his bosozoku to ride, and that in turn had made him feel a little ornery.

So the monstrous delinquent decided that it might be fun to go pick on the hands and dolls they had in the butterfly room, or anyone who might have retreated into the secret little hole.

He came in on the hour, big hands buried in the pockets of his hoodie, looking surly and bored, face shadowed by the deep hood. He stopped after crossing over the threshold and looked around the room, head tilted and expression curious, before he tugged the door shut, pulled the hood off, and then unzipped his hoodie and tossed it haphazardly onto the ground.

“Sonozaki-chan,” he said, the honorific emphasized, as he closed ground and plopped down beside her on the couch, disregarding any sort of physical space boundaries and peering intently at the book open in her small hands. Small everything. He was used to towering over people, but Kozue and Renju were the best contrasts in height.

“Whatcha reading?”

"I don't know yet."

It was something, she supposed, that it wouldn't really hurt to reveal, even to him. Granted, he was very good at using things against people and hitting soft spots, but it wasn't as if she cared about being judged for it. (And anyway, why would he care? He wasn't like Kou, who had seemed to disapprove of her indecision. Odds were that talking about it would just make him get up and leave to find someone more interesting anyway.)

"And if I did," she deadpanned, turning the page, "I'm certain you'd have better resources at your disposal."

The tall boy eyed her sidelong, one eyebrow lifted and a small smirk tugging at the scarred corner of his mouth. He slumped a little deeper into the chair and lifted his legs up to plant them on the coffee table in front of the couch, and leaned into her again to peek at the book. The smirk slid away and he tugged the book from her hands to hold it open instead in one of his bigger ones so he could better look at it, or rather squint.

“Don’t go selling yourself, short, Sonozaki-chan. Ain’t you got good grades? And criminal defense lawyers do need a certain …” He tilted his this way and that, making a show of working out the right word, “cutting coldness about them to be effective. You could go far.”

There it was again. Just because of her Shadow--and really, that was the only thing he could be referring to, as far as she knew--he seemed to have it in his head that she was some kind of closet sadist. Didn't everyone's Shadows attack the team? Granted, hers had been more serious about it, but she had interpreted that (correctly, she thought) as that deeper part of herself fearing and resenting them as she had at the time.

She made no motion to go after the book, just as she'd made no attempt to keep it in her hands. "You've referred to this 'coldness' on several occasions now, and I still don't know what you're talking about." She nudged her bag with her foot. "If it's a joke, it's in rather poor taste."

He answered her with a silent shrug, and actually licked his thumb before turning the page of the book. Legal mumbo-jumbo wasn’t his forte, but he had to know enough, or would have to learn enough, to be successful in his business. Affording the best and most amoral lawyers around was all well and good, but knowledge was sometimes just as dangerous as muscle, so he planned to have a lot of both.

“Your place struck a chord with me.” He said evenhandedly as he finally snapped the book closed, took his big clodhoppers off the table and then leaned forward to set the book on it instead. While he was down there one long arm shot around her legs to grab her bag, which he drug in front of him and unzipped. Poised to dive inside and root around, he commented again.

“Your place might of been worse’n mine, and that don’t come from someone nice down inside. An icy abyss and big wolf are different, but they both lead to the same thing. One death’s just a little prettier than the other.”

He tugged what was likely a notebook out of the bag and suddenly leaned into her, invading her personal space, dark eyes boring into hers, nearly nose to nose. He smelled of oil and cigarette smoke, and underneath it all was the copper of blood. His eyes were alight with dark humor, and his teeth were bared in the forgery of a smile.

“I seen guys with eyes that remind me of that place of yours. The work they do isn’t as pretty as your ice, but it gets the job done."

There wasn't much in the bag: mostly school notes (as usual, largely indecipherable to anyone who wasn't Renju herself) and a random assortment of books, the subjects of which varied wildly, from religion to physics to (as Reizo had seen) law. They were mostly introductions to their respective topics, and clearly nothing that Renju particularly intended to keep private; the most protest she'd managed was a stifled yelp when his arm snapped around her and a resigned sigh when he'd grabbed the bag. Surely he'd get tired of it and let go of the matter soon...

Perhaps surprisingly, the fold-up kama in their unobtrusive pouch were there as well, lest either of them forget why this conversation was happening in the first place.

"The similarities end there, I assure--" And then he was in her face.

She leaned back and away from the sudden invasion of her space, her blood icy in her veins. The tang of oil and smoke and copper put her in mind of a certain city, the scarred grin a certain wolf that had somehow seemed at home there. Her breath caught in her throat at the memory, but she pushed it down and met his gaze.

"It wanted you all gone. Just like any other Shadow. There's no more significance to it than that." But she didn't sound entirely convinced of this.

“You got a point,” he conceded, broad shoulders rising in a small shrug, “All of those things wanted us out or dead.” He canted his head to the side and leaned further into her, one big paw coming to rest on the couch beside her to better balance him as he loomed over her, eyes dangerous and smile toothy. Showing your stomach to a predator was never a good idea, and though Reizo was fully aware that the small girl was afraid of him, he was eager to see if any of that steel would rise up out of her again from their first meeting.

“But the thing is,” he said, voice low and musing, “is that yours did it so damned well. That place over there is like a direct line to your head, and wasn't anyone's near as vicious as ours, Renju-chan.” There was a low and creeping poison in his tone, and the way he said her name was almost acidic. “You ever think about all those others must think of you after that? I mean, you ain't got any more popular, have you?”

Renju's leg twitched. Logically, she was aware that Reizo wasn't actually going to harm her, that this was all just intimidation, trying to get into her head, and nothing more. Her body, however, dredging up the sorts of associations it was, was having trouble not kicking into fight-or-flight mode, and predator or not, she genuinely wasn't sure which she'd choose if it came to that.

"It's Sonozaki," she finally said, her voice a bit choked despite herself, but she did manage a glare through those big eye-magnifying glasses. "And frankly, as long as the others still feel they can rely on me in Paradise, their opinion doesn't matter." And the few who did matter, or had come to matter since then, didn't seem to care, she didn't add, lest she give him more bait to snap up.

“Really?” He asked her, eying her as if she were some new type of fascinating insect. Some dark humor filled his voice, his expression, his posture. He was having fun scaring her. The toothy smile changed, scything across his face, the white of his teeth accentuated by the angry red stripe etched onto the corner of his mouth.

“Ain't that just like you? Icy cold. Not caring about anything.”
