WHO: Renju, Kozue.
WHAT: Despair.
WHEN: Afternoon after the 2-B debacle.
WHERE: Outside school.
WHY: Shared misery is half misery?

It had been a long, long day at school today, and for once not by choice.

The school was buzzing after that fiasco, apparently, but Renju had missed most of it, having been one of the few members of 2-B to stay for the entirety of the clean-up. (She had given up on trying to wipe off the glitter; the panda costume had gotten most of it at first, sure, but the cleaning effort had made it worse than a couple of single large doses could ever have been.) What she caught on her way out, shoulders slumped and swearing never to wear black and white again, were mere aftershocks in comparison to the initial impact of the... event. Really, she was at a loss for any better words to describe it that didn't just degenerate into synonyms for "terrible". Her class, formerly only particularly notable for being contenders for the highest average exam scores, was now the laughingstock of Nanakamado.

She caught a pair of underclassmen from 1-A pointing at her and giggling; she shot them a disgusted look, huffed irritably, and moved on.

At any rate, she decided, it wasn't important. They'd get done with the next couple of days and everyone would move on, preoccupied with the next bit of news or gossip, and she could go back to business as usual. (As "usual" as business ever was, at any rate.) And she could forget that ridiculous "chaos theory" business she'd felt obligated to spruce up from the script she'd been handed that morning.

Kozue had been holed up in the bathroom for quite some time now—in fact, after Kiriko had gone her own way, Kozue had gone so far as to barricade the door so that she could try and dry out her clothing on the hand dryer. Of course, that required privacy, and she still remembered when Satou had barged, or tried to barge, into the women's bathroom that one time (god, but it seemed so long ago now), and even if he was gone, there were always other idiots out there.

Today had proved that.

She finally exited, clothing marginally dryer (and toasty warm) and a good amount of the glitter painstakingly picked out of her hair and off of her arms and face. It helped, but it hadn't helped enough, and she still faintly sparkled as she came out into the sunshine. Her socks were still soggy, and they were making her outdoor shoes damp; with a dour frown, or, at least, a frown that was dour for Kozue, she started off towards the dorms.

That was when she caught sight of a familiar, short and dark-haired form ahead of her. Kozue paused, awkward for a moment, not sure whether or not to be resentful. Then again, Renju seemed like she had been suffering almost as much as most of the unwilling audience, so...

"Hey, senpai, heading to the dorm?" She asked, trotting to catch up, and making a squelching sound with her shoes as she did so.

Renju, still being in more-or-less full glittery form, was difficult to miss. The squelching noise behind her was even more so, and she'd half-turned to look back at what was almost certainly another victim of the deluge...

... oh. At least she was alone this time. Having Kozue see her in any of that had been bad enough, but the comments from the peanut gallery had been too much. She knew Reizo's tendency to mock anyone in earshot, but that didn't mean that she, personally, wanted anything to do with it. Or him. Come to think of it, she was surprised that the two of them were hanging around together voluntarily, but she was friends with Kiriko, and Kiriko and Reizo were... it was really none of her business, but it explained that, she supposed.

In response to the inquiry, she nodded, looking more resigned than anything. It wasn't quite a post-Paradise look, but it wasn't far off from it. "And you, Kondo-san?"

She nodded. There was no other choice, really; not going back to the dorm meant not showering, and not removing the last pernicious traces of glitter from her life. (Again.)

"Let's walk together," she suggested, although she had almost already fallen into step with Renju at this point. She paused a moment, thoughtfully, and then turned back to the second-year. "So, and I don't mean to sound like I'm accusing you of anything, but... really, did you know that most of that was coming?" That was accompanied by a sour, sourish frown. At least, sour for Kozue, which was more petulant than anything. "Or did she just blindside you with all of it?"

"We got little warning about anything besides the food and costumes. And the glitter, I suppose." Renju sighed and ran a hand irritably through her sparkly hair. It only made matters worse. "We didn't rehearse... which explains most of that debacle."

She paused, her steps faltering briefly. "I received the script a day ago. What I got was actually worse than what you heard, at least stylistically." She couldn't quite repress a shudder at the memory of the script she'd been handed. Awful. "I did what I could to salvage it."

"It was torture, practically," Kozue affirmed, frowning and patting at her mostly-fixed hair. Really, what had been going through that girl's mind? "... the food wasn't awful, though, until it got glittered, too."

Adding insult to injury to starving. But her frown didn't last all that long; if they weren't warned, then most of 2-B probably wasn't at fault for it. And Seiko was either driven to distraction and malice by that breakup with Tom, or Seiko was crazy—a wounded part of Kozue suggested merely a bitch and the voice was given credence for a moment, but she pushed it aside because it still caused pangs of hurt and doubt—but Seiko wasn't here so she shouldn't be busy blaming her.

It took her a moment, but she composed her face (she had looked downtrodden there, as those thoughts had occurred to her) and made herself smile a little at Renju. "It's pretty clear it was... not really what most of you wanted, at least.

"Although what you read was creepy."

There was a brief flash of... something that wasn't despair across Renju's face, something almost hopeful, but it was squashed almost before it appeared. She had tried to at least salvage that part of it, make it somewhat worthy of respect--or, at least, less laughable than the rest of that farce had been. And she could certainly do creepy. But it really wasn't something she ought to be taking pride in.

"The rest of it was also supposed to be. I think." She sighed heavily, her shoulders slumping. She'd been too caught up in her own thoughts to notice Kozue looking the same way just a few moments ago. "Whatever the case, it's finished, at least. Years 1 and 3 have theirs tomorrow, correct?"

"I have to go home and get ready," she confirmed, nodding her head. And she couldn't afford to be glittery for that, because she had the feeling it'd ruin the atmosphere they were going for. "You're going to be there for ours, right? I think it's going to be a hit."

She grinned, showing enthusiasm for the first time since somewhere near the beginning of the 2-B fiasco; "I get to dress up, it's going to be... pretty wild, actually."

"I intend to be."

Glad for the change of topic, Renju tried to remember if she'd been paying attention to any of the festival flyers around. Somewhat to her chagrin, she realized that she hadn't, and so she wasn't certain what to expect. Still, with Kiriko and Kozue in charge, it was likely to be interesting, and without Seiko involved, there would be significantly less glitter.

And Kozue dressing up... well, she was curious about that, too. "It'll be better than that was, I'm sure."

"If nothing else is good, my costume will be incredible," Kozue announced with a smile, and a little, proud shake of her head. More glitter cascaded out of her loose hair, and that dampened her spirit, although not horribly. Better out than in—well, that wasn't quite accurate, but nonetheless...

"You should look forward to it. It's another one of those things that would have given my grandmother a massive heart attack if she'd ever seen it." Kozue noted this, not even dispassionately, but with some pleasure; Kondo Fumiko deserved it, as far as she was concerned.
