WHO: Kai, Yoshi.
WHAT: EMERGENCY BONDING, er, sewing lesson and couch appreciation.
WHERE: Butterfly Room.
WHEN: Post-Masamidungeon
WHY: NEED S-LINKS UP.

[Kai is sprawled out on the sweet couch, lying propped up on his back, sewing bag by his feet. He's working on a cross-stitch pattern, but doesn't seem to be paying attention to what he's doing.]

Ow.

[He pricked himself. Again. Sucking the end of his thumb, he doesn't hear the door opening...]

"Seriously."

[His lights up. Finally, something he can talk about completely freely!]

"Yeah! I love sewing and making clothes. It's kind of my thing. Lately it's all I do when I'm not in Paradise." [His smile is a little too big.]

"Like, I made idol costumes this year and some shirts and..." [He rambles on for a bit, comfortable in his own element, until he trails off and abruptly adds:] "We haven't talked a lot, huh?"

[Yoshi makes an interested noise at hearing the idol contest mentioned.]

"Whoa, which ones?"

[She is fascinated by this information. The costumes had all been so... special, and she hadn't thought much about where some of them came from.]

"Hm, I guess we haven't." [She leans back a little, thinking this over.] "Everything's been so busy since you joined, and before. Now that I think about it, I don't think I've really talked to anyone on the team for a while."

[This doesn't seem to bother her too much, but it does seem like something that she hasn't really thought about.]

"Goto-kun and Mara-chan's! And Seiko-san's cat outfit she wore in the audience..." [That one was a little...special, but anything for a project.]

"Yeah..." [He carefully puts his project away for the moment, no longer in the mood to sew, and pulls his legs up to his chest, resting his chin on his knees.] "How busy was it before I joined? Has it always been like this?" [He's not sure he wants to know, but he figures Yoshimi is one of the few people on the team who won't get all "it's our duty" or "I like being a hero" on him if they talk about Paradise, so he'd rather hear it from her.]

"...Are they all so crazy?" [He doesn't elaborate on what he means by "they." Expression unreadable, he waits for an answer.]

"The others hadn't found me yet when Oubai and Ishinomori went in, but it's been about the same since the spring, aside from... well, everything that happened with Mikio-kun and his place."

[She fidgets a little. The empty desk in 1-B still bothers her.]

"And I think they are. Sometimes in different ways, but we always get attacked in the end."

[She's quiet for a long moment, weighing her words carefully for once. Deep breath.]

"We're... there's hardly anyone but us who hasn't gone in, you know?"

[It's an obvious point, harmless in and of itself, but there's something about saying it out loud that makes the implications uncomfortably real.]

[Kai nods, taking it in, frowning a little at "always get attacked."]

[...At this revelation, his eyes widen like he's been struck. He's silent for a long time, wrapping his arms around his legs and squeezing them tightly like he wants to disappear.]

"...I never thought about that."

[The lip-biting - a trademark that only comes out when he's worried - has come back in full force. Suddenly, he gasps loudly and puts a hand to his mouth. His fingers come away red where he's bitten through his bottom lip.]

"Owww fuck..."

[He bends over, one hand to his mouth while the other fumbles around in his bag for a cloth scrap he can use to blot. Finding one, he raises it to his lip with a shaking hand.]

"S-Sorry..." [He says, words muffled.]

"Um...! Are you okay?"

[Not being the most panicked person in the room over a Paradise-related development is a pretty new experience for her, and it takes a few seconds of flailing (plus two steps forward, one step back, and a whole lot of incoherent spluttering) before she can decide what to do with herself.]

"I-I should be the one apologizing, I didn't mean to... I shouldn't have brought it up. I know it sounds pretty bad."

[She waits for Kai to make the next move, scared of putting him even more on-edge if she keeps rambling about their seemingly inevitable dates with their Shadows.]

"N-No, I'm fine, I'm fine." [These words are also muffled. Kai winces after he speaks, his lip smarting with every word.]

[He's quiet for a long moment, squeezing the cloth to his mouth, and once the bleeding has finally stopped, he says:]

"...What do you think it's going to be like when we go?" [His expression looks detached, far away, even though his voice is wavering.]

[She relaxes a little, reassured by hearing a when instead of an if. As grim as the outlook is, at least it's something that she can be certain of after a year full of uncertainties.]

"Hard to say. Scary, I guess, but the others have had lots of practice by now. It's not like they won't come for us in time."

[Probably, but she leaves that part out.]

"Having everything put on display seems like it'll be the hard part. For me, anyway."

[The when has given Kai no peace, as his expression clearly shows. Resignation, panic, and fear all flicker across it for a moment, before he manages to make his face impassive.]

"...In time."

[He doesn't voice the what if in his head, but it sits in his throat, potent and tasting like death.]

"I don't...really feel the same. I don't have anything to hide." [He thinks, anyway.] "Heh, if anything I'm hoping my design will be pretty. We've had some crazy ones so far? Were they all that intricate?"

[There's a strained smile forced onto his face. It doesn't suit him.]

"Hey, I'm not hiding." [Yoshimi snaps at the implication, more than little defensive, then reels herself back in.] "...I just don't want everyone to see me turned inside-out. It's different."

[Denial party, up in here.]

"Sonozaki-san's was the plainest one so far, and even that had... you know, the garden and everything."

[It seems easier for everyone involved if she leaves out Shingo's Paradise, so she does. She's more concerned with how to reassure Kai, anyway, and she spends a few seconds twiddling her thumbs - well, playing with her braids, but the effect is the same - before coming to a decision.]

"Um... if you are scared, that's okay. I know it's hard to be caught up in all this."

[Kai doesn't retort, but he was thinking about it. Oh, Yoshimi.]

"Huh. That's...comforting." [He's heard enough about the others to know what a dismal comparison that really is. But still, the "smile" doesn't go away.]

"I'm not scared. Just preparing myself. It's hard, but I'll l-live." [The stutter falls out by surprise, and it seems to shock Kai out of his creepy faux-happy act. His eyes widen, face flashing with a brief disturbed expression, before he quickly turns away, grabs his back, and all but jumps off of the couch.]

"I'm sorry, I just remembered I have something to do."

[He can't leave fast enough.]
