Who: Kai and Kouki.
What: Costume design.
Where: Kouki's house.
When: Some evening after school.
Why: Mara-chan can't win without a killer costume!

There was almost nothing that made Yamada Kai happier, or got his mind moving faster, than sewing. Having opted out of the ride his dad had offered him to Kouki's house (hopefully walking would help him burn off this energy, he'd thought), he walked quickly, almost jogging, to the address Kouki'd given him, not weighed down in the slightest by the stuffed bag and portable sewing machine he was carrying with him.

Kouki was going to be in the idol competition. Adorable.

Kouki wanted him to make him his idol costume. Awesome.

He was now going to Kouki's house to help him plan out said costume. The best! And this night was going to be so much fun, he didn't even -

He arrived at Kouki's house in good time, and after some juggling of his things to try and get a free hand for knocking, rapped politely on the door, rocking forward onto his toes with genuine excitement.

There was little surprise in that Kouki was waiting right inside the door. Kai had barely knocked twice upon it before it swung inward to reveal his scrawny underclassman half-obscured behind the pile of clothes in his arms.

"Hey, Kai-dono! Come on in! You can put that stuff somewhere, okay? I wanna show you the clothes I picked out!"

With much effort, he staggered backwards, still clutching the massive bundle with both his hands and chin.

"Okay!" Kai entered the house, slipping out of his shoes inside the door, closing it, and setting his things down briefly so he could help Kouki with his items. "Did you bring down your entire closet, Yoshida-chan? Here, let me help." He grabbed an armful off of the top, hoping that it would lighten the load somewhat. He could grab his own things in a minute.

"Where are we going to set up?"

Kouki's smile was much more visible once the top of the pile was removed. "Thanks, Kai-dono!"

Slightly unburdened and less staggery, he walked as quickly as possible to the center of the living room. "Here's good! You can put the sewing machine on the coffee table!"

He then proceeded to throw the still-massive pile of clothing onto the floor.

Kai followed Kouki to the living room and deposited the clothes on top of the already huge pile, then went back to retrieve his own things. He set up the sewing machine where he was told to, and then went about emptying his bag of thread, pincushion, needles, cloth, and pretty much every other sewing accessory (whether it was necessary or not, he'd brought them all) and setting them down wherever he happened to see a free spot around the couch and the coffee table. It got to the point where one couldn't sit on or walk around the sofa without risk of upsetting something.

As he set up, he kept going with a constant stream of chatter, barely letting Kouki get a word in edgewise: "Ahhh, this is going to be so much fun! I can't believe you're going to do the idol contest, you're so confident, I wouldn't be able to do it - I can't sing or dance, really, just sew. So you asked the right person to make your costume! What do you think your idol persona's gonna be like, so I can start working on their design aesthetic. Or, wait, maybe I should take you meaurements first? Ah, sorry, I get carried away and..."

Kouki crouched down next to Kai, grinning like a maniac in anticipation. He seemed to have full faith in his friend's ability to create garments, which manifested in seeming displays of lunacy.

"Well, do my measurements and I can tell you about Mara-chan while you do!" He said this in a tone that assumed that Kai knew exactly what he was talking about, which was not necessarily the best assumption he could make. The next moment, he stood, and began to take off his baggy T-shirt.

"You need me to take this off to measure me, right?" The last word was somewhat muffled by the shirt covering his head on the way up.

Kai was snapped out of his chatter (a spectacular feat) by the mention of getting information about Mara-chan.

"Ooh, tell me!" he said. "I only know the name right now, what's Mara-chan like?" He dropped whatever materials he was holding and his hands quickly balled up into excited fists as he looked at Kouki with an obvious light in his eyes.

"Yup! Take your shirt off, but, uh, you can leave the pants on for now, heh." Kai's train of thought had clearly gotten ahead of itself, and now he felt embarassed and awkward without quite knowing why. Picking up the cloth measuring tape, he stood up and tiptoed over the scattered supplies to a free section of the floor, gesturing for Kouki to follow him.

Kouki lifted the shirt up off of his head before he began talking again, and tossed it across the room. His eyes sparkled.

"Well! Mara-chan is the defender of love and beauty, chosen by the voice of the universe to save the world by singing! Only the love of all of Nanakamado will give her the power necessary! And she always looks her finest, to capture the hearts of the multitudes!" This was all said in a very high and excited voice, as if Kouki was already in character. A moment later, his tone shifted.

"I think she'd probably have a very elegant loli-goth look, but with a more alien flare! Kinda like in my sketches." With one foot, he pointed over to an open sketchbook left lying on a wig on the couch. Indeed, there was a drawing of an elegant girl with long blonde hair, standing on a crescent moon.

Kai listened as he took the measurements, deftly writing them with one hand in a notebook and pen he'd managed to pull from where it had been wedged in his back pocket.

"Neat! I can't wait to start working more on her!"

He craned his neck to look at the sketchbook. "She's pretty, Yoshida-chan. And so will you when I'm done with you!"

After taking what he needed to, he sat down on the floor next to Kouki's pile of clothes (and in between smaller piles of his own stuff) and began to pick through it, looking for something that would be a good starting point for what Kouki wanted to do. "Is there anything in here, Yoshida-chan, that you think would work?"

Were he not holding them out for measurements, Kouki would have clapped his hands together in excitement.

"Pretty? I've always wanted to be pretty! Like in that one dream where I was the prettiest pony. Yeah." He nodded in the manner of a madman conversing with himself, but turned his head closer to Kai.

"But you'll make me prettier than a pony, eh, Kai-dono? I know you can!"

Once the measurements were finished, Kouki leaned in over Kai, and tugged at a few articles of clothing. In particular, the still-shirtless boy showed interest in what looked like a frilly white shirt, a blue jacket-looking thing, and what may have been a skirt.

"Maybe these! I really like them for their cool, classy style. Could they work for a dress?"

Kai grinned. "You bet I can!"

Looking over the clothes Kouki had picked out, Kai sucked in his bottom lip as he thought. "Mmm. Maybe. If I made the shirt and...skirt? into one piece, it could be a feasible dress. And then the jacket overtop of it. Hmmmm...."

He got up, walking over to the couch and his sewing machine on the table. Sitting down, he waved Kouki over and held out a hand for the clothes. "Let's see what I can do."

"Ohhhhhhhh, that sounds cool! Can I have a hat, too?" Kouki was caught up in the moment, not worried about any pretense of faked awkwardness. Natural awkwardness would be more than enough.

Deftly, he picked up the units of clothing and passed them to Kai, before sitting down directly across from his friend. After a moment, he began to drum his fingers on the table. Rather than sitting seiza, he stretched his legs out, and let his feet poke at Kai's.

"So, is doing this fun?"

Kai set the clothes down on his lap, then pulled his sketchbook from the bag he'd left by the table and began to draw furiously, trying to answer Kouki's questions all the while.

"We'll see how this looks without a hat first, okay? I don't know, I'm leaning towards without right now; I don't know if it would go with what you described."

At the feeling of Kouki's feet on his, Kai pushed back against him playfully with his own. "Yes! I'm doing what I like, and I'm with my friend. What isn't there to like?"

After a few more minutes of frenzied sketching, Kai set down the pencil and handed the sketchbook over to Kouki. "I'm thinking about something like this - tell me what you think?"

He had drawn something to the best of Kouki's specifications - a dress pieced together from the separate top and skirt, with the jacket over it and embellished with lace accessories and cutesy chains, along with other small lolita details on the dress. Below that were a pair of tights and chunky black high-heels.
