Who: Kanaye and Maeko
What: Checking up.
Where: Kanaye's room.
When: After Toshidungeon.
Why: Kanaye is an idiot.

Kanaye winced as he dabbed some ointment onto his bruises. Idiot, idiot, idiot... In his defense, how would he know that staircase would de-attach from the wall? It's not like that happens all the time. And it's not like he expected not to be able to get healed... What's the point of having dia-ers if they can't DO anything? He grumbled to himself as he took off his shirt to get at the cuts easier, wrapping bandages around himself. Wincing again, he sighed and laid back. He wasn't quite sure what just happened, but he really didn't like it...

"Yes." He said, taking off his pants to tie bandages around one of his legs. "You ok, Maeko?" He asked, wincing as he tied it a bit too tight. Stupid, stupid, stupid... He had freaking left Maeko alone. Just because he was stupid, he had let her maybe get hurt. What if she got hurt because he wasn't there? Stupid, stupid, stupid..

"I'm fine." She said to the door. "Still in one peice."

She fidgetted a little outside the door. It was mostly true. She was breathing and that seemed to be as close to fine as any of them were nowadays.

"Are you feeling any better?"

"That's good..." He said, grunting as he tied the last bandage. He nodded, and, realizing that Maeko couldn't see that, said "Kind of. I could be worse, at least. It wasn't anything fatal or anything like that. Thanks for worrying. You can come in if you'd like."

He attempted to stretch out on the bed, failing once he realized he was too sore and he probably would have opened his wounds more, instead just sitting on it.

Maeko fumbled with the handle slowly, finally enterring after a few seconds of hesitation. She sighed visibly when she saw Kanaye, closing the door behind her quietly. That power not working wasn't particularly new to her. She'd tried it this side of the doors before to no avail and it hadn't been much use for her hands. But it now working on someone else when she was used to it doing so was worrying.

She tried to cast that out of her mind for now. She had only just managed to accept the rules Paradise had. it breaking those rules was more distressing than she really felt capable of handling right now. She wanted nothing more right now than to apprehend Misaki and Seiko and eat cake and drink bromonade and look at pictures of kittens or something with them and forget anything was wrong with anything ever.

"Please try to be more careful..." She started, sighing again.

Kanaye waved, weakly, before nodding. "Sorry, Maeko..." He said, sighing and hanging his head. "I'm sorry I worried you. I won't do it again. I promise." He smiled at her. "It's good that you're ok. How's Kozue-chan, Seiko-chan, and Toru-kun? They're ok too, right?"

"Good." Maeko said, moving toward Kanaye. She stopped a few feet away, trying to examine his condition despite being not anything close to qualified to. "Everyone else is fine, you don't need to worry about them."

She wasn't actually 100% sure this was true but even if it wasn't it wasn't like Kanaye worrying would help matters at all.

"Nothing's broken, right?"

"That's good..." He said softly, looking at the ground and shuffling his feet. He tried, experimentally, to stand up, but winced and sat down when he was half-way through.

"I don't think so. I can move everything, at least." Kanaye smiled. "A bit painfully, but. Yeah, I think I'm fine."

"Don't try to move around so much if you don't think you can, stupid" Maeko shook her head quietly as she spoke. "That's good, at least. Should I try to find a doctor or do you think you'll be okay? "

"Sorry, Maeko..." Kanaye said, sighing and looking away. "I just. I'm annoyed. I just don't know what the hell I can do...I want to do something, but..." He sighed and looked at her, wincing. "Well, I can't exactly do dungeons."

"I'm fine, Maeko. I don't need a doctor. Don't need to make up a cover story, in that case." He laughed to himself.

"Just rest up. The sooner you get better the sooner you can get back to doing stuff, right?"

She seated herself next to Kanaye, being careful not to touch him. "If you're sure, then. Did you manage to sleep since before? Has the laughing stopped?"

"Yeah. I guess so." He sighed. He didn't know what else to say, after all. He was getting that a lot more, lately.

"At least it stops when I try to sleep." He sighed. "So I can sleep. It's just...annoying. Does that witch do anything to you, like that?" He asked, turning towards her. "Or is that just me?"

"It's good that it's not stopping you from sleeping any more, at least." She said, at least trying to smile. "The witch? She doesn't laugh really. She just gets mad. Or I get mad. It's hard to tell the difference sometimes. But she's been calm while we've been here."

"Does she keep you up at night? Does she make any noises when she gets mad?" He asked, looking at Maeko, smiling. "Well, that's good. I'm glad that this place makes you feel better. I can't imagine having your head god get mad would be a pleasant experience."

"She screams and yells. Nothing I can understand, though." Maeko said, nodding. "I can usually sleep through it unless I'm angry too."

She was discussing a voice in her head. They were both discussing voices that they could hear in thier heads. They were going mad.

"I think it's the water, she's quietest in the water." She smiled. "I heard a story about water melting witches before. Maybe that's why."

She hadn't thought of this before and now the though was bugging her. Had she been melting the witch without realizing?

"Ah. Lucky you. Maybe I can just ignore it? Well, I can try, at least..." He said, sighing, but nodding. "Yeah, if it comes back, I'll just ignore it. That works!" He said as he punched his palm, wincing and shaking his hand, wincing even more. "Ok, stupid idea..."

"Wouldn't she get ANGRIER if you were melting her?" He asked, confused. "I might try water next time. If it helps you, it might help me." Kanaye nodded. "I hope it never comes back. It's annoying..."

"Don't- ! ...idiot." Maeko began a second too late, sighing and shaking her head. Very carefully, she placed a hand on top of Kanaye's to stop him from shaking it. "Be careful."

"I guess she might. But I can't think of any other explaination." She shook her head. "Trust me, you really don't want that to happen."

Kanaye smiled at Maeko sheepishly. "I'm sorry, Maeko. Didn't mean to worry you." He said softly. "I will be careful. I'll try, at least."

"Why?" He asked, looking at her curiously. "Wouldn't not having the laughing in my ear when I try to go to sleep be a good thing? I mean, I can probably ignore it, but..."

"Good." Maeko said, removing her hand just as carefully.

"There's a difference between being quiet and being gone. The witch is quiet now but I still know she's there. The only time she wasn't was...well, it was back then. And her not being there was somehow worse than anything else there."

"It's fine. I'm fine." Maeko smiled. "Just be careful what you wish for."

She fidgetted with her bracelets quietly for a while and then looked up. "Do you want be to bring you a book or anything? So you won't have to walk around to get it yourself."

Maeko allowed Kanaye to lean on her, wrapping her arms around him very, very carefully and trying not to hurt him in doing so.

"If you're sure..." She smiled. "Love you, too."

She stayed still for a while, thinking. It was nice but there were worries she couldn't get out of her head. Despite doing her best to stay still to avoid hurting Kanaye she eventually began to fidget.

"...Do you know why it didn't work?" She asked eventually, apparently having managed to go from content to near-terrified on just her own thoughts.

Kanaye was content and happy just leaning against his girlfriend. He did love her. Panicked, he finally realized. It could have been her that was this hurt. Sure, he didn't matter. But she did. And he needed to make sure she wasn't hurt, ever again. No matter what the cost.

He was shaken out of his thoughts by her question. Distracted, he asked "what didn't work?"

"The dumb witch didn't work. She couldn't do anything, right?" The fact that boyfriend was occupying arms and thus kind of in the way seemed to be the only thing between the back of her left hand and the fingernails of her right. She was very uncomfortable with all of this, with having to rely on the witch she hated so much and with the fact that the stupid witch had proven herself useless anyway. "Do you have any idea why that was?"

"Not at all. I don't know any more about this place then you do. But, Maeko, it's alright." He kissed her again, smiling. "You don't need to worry about me. I'll be ok. As long as you're fine, I'm fine. I just need to protect you. Then. We're both happy. Right?" He smiled.

Maeko moved away from the kiss and shook her head. "No. It's not alright and it can't just be shrugged off."

She sighed, having said that a little more bluntly than she'd intended to. "People have died over there. You've died over there. Twice! What if the witch couldn't do anything then? Someone might be dead for real..."

Kanaye shook his head. "So? So long as I could save you, I'd be fine with it. Besides. I won't die. No one will die again. I'll protect them. And you. As soon as we get back, I'm going to figure out who's doing this. And I will make them pay." Kanaye's eyes flashed dangerously as he said this.

That would have been a lot more intimidating coming from someone who was not a pathetic mess of cuts and bruises right now. As it stood, there was still something very worrying about it that Maeko couldn't ignore.

And that worry quickly escalated, as everything Maeko thought ever seemed to, into rage in the time it took her to pull her arms away from Kanaye. And so she carefully considered the most tactful and considerate way possible to word her concerns and decided to do the complete opposite.

"You sound like her." She said, frowning. It was really the last thing she had the right to call anyone out on and she was fully aware of this but doing it anyway. "Only you're making even less sense. Maybe I need subtitles for you, too."

Kanaye's eyes widened. "W...what...?" he said, looking at Maeko with fear in his eyes. "I didn't...I don't... I just...."

"...I'm sorry, Maeko. But. What else can I do? I can't do anything else but keep you from harm. You and everyone else. I know it sounds bad, but... I don't know what else to do."

Maeko had immediately felt bad. Justifiably or not, she had just compared a badly injured Kanaye to the most terrible thing she could think of.

But she was also a great believer in the 'already fucked up, no point in trying to recover' school of thought. And this whole conversation was still hitting far too close to home, especially after being reminded that she'd been slipping back into old habits again (again).

"No. Shut up. That's dumb. You don't get to die anyway. Nobody does." She said before fading into incoherence and sighing, moving her hands in her lap and staring at them, tristing a bead around on the elastic of one of the bracelets to hide and then show and then hide again the ladybird printed on one side.

"I don't deserve protection and I certainly don't need it." She mumbled, not aware of the significance of those words. "I don't want it, either."

"I-I'm sorry, Maeko...I-I just..." Kanaye said before looking at her with a deer-in-the-headlights look. Oh god...He still hadn't really recovered from shadow maeko. Especially the first time he found out who she was and that she was hiding as regular Maeko. Kanaye just stared, scared, for a bit before crying into himself. "Maeko, I-I am so sorry..."

And there she'd gone again. Way to go, Akuba. If being able to make people who refused to stand up for themselves cry was useful she might even have had a marketable skill there.

She sighed, touching Kanaye's hand carefully. Making people scared was no fun. It was what the witch did (and not even in a metaphorical way, it seemed to be one of the few things she was even capable of).

She didn't actually apologise (why should she? it wasn't like getting mad was anything to apologise for.) hut remained in silence with her hand on his for a while.

"Just be careful, okay?" She said eventually, once she'd calmed enough to trust herself to talk. "I don't want you dead. And if there's a chance the witch can't do anything..."
