Mikio Seiji ([info]canhasurpencils) wrote in [info]disappear_plot,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Seiji, anyone with questions
What: Questionnins
Where: The clubhouse
When: after Obon
Why: THERE ARE QUESTIONS

Seiji was easy enough to find. He woke up in the morning, collected a bag full of snacks, took a few of his horror stories and walked to his badly built clubhouse, where he alternated reading and studying until it got dark. Obon and infrequent trips to the convenience store or the secondhand bookshop had been the only exception.

As always, he was there and on page 78 of 'Sometimes there's a zombie' when whoever wanted to question him arrived.

"How was I supposed to know he'd be in that stupid fort? That kind of thing is for kids!"

Kiriko huffed as she climbed up, stopping when her head appeared in Seiji's doorway. She looked up from having addressed the people on the ground, swept her eyes over the contents of the makeshift fort, and smiled at Seiji.

"Hi, Mikio-san. We were supposed to talk about Student Council stuff, remember? Do you think you could come down?"

"um, um, okay." Seiji said, nodding. He folded over the corner of the page where the zombie complained about having to switch from brains to value brains in the zombie credit crunch and set his book down, climbing out of the clubhouse.

Toru had dutifully followed Kiriko, despite misgivings concerning a pseudo-interrogation of his (admittedly suspicious) classmate who he generally considered to be a friend. After all, it was his role to fill.

"H-hey, Seiji-kun!" With an uncomfortable smile, he hoped to lessen the other boy's levels of fear and nervousness. It was the least he could do.

"oh! hi, Ishinomori-kun!" Seiji said, waving. "are you on the student council, too? i didn't know."

Looking even more distraught and sheepish, Toru spoke to Seiji in low tones.

"N-no, I'm not on student council... I'm just helping Ikeda-san and the rest out... w-we've got some... stuff to talk about." With this, he stepped aside to let the others confront his classmate.

Kanaye growled to himself. This was not a good thing. He doubted that Seiji would talk if there was a lot of people here...

Oh well. He did his part. "Yo, Seiji-kun. You know anything about good health charms?"

"um, um, you mean at the shop? they sell charms for pretty much everything there."

He paused, apparently thinking.

"um, why? are you ill?"

From behind Kanaye, Keiichi looked at the timid looking boy. This was...unlikely to be easy.

"I'm not ill, but one of my friends is," he explained, nodding. "Would you happen to have any of those charms on you, or know what they look like? I remember seeing one in school, and I want to know if it's the same one."

"ah, really? oh no, it's not Aoi-san, is it? i was talking to her before and she wasn't really well..." OH MAN OH GOD OH MAN OH GOD what if he had made Miaski sick when he talked to her?

He thought desperately. If a charm would help then. "um, i think bag charms are popular right now. i- i have one here that i got as a present for someone."

He dug around in his poctets and held out a bag charm. it was a chain of red beads and at the bottom a wooden charm, like the pendants, only this one had the characters for 'protection from spirits'.

"um, pendants were kind of popular a while ago but they don't sell so well in summer, people have to take them off if they go swimming." he thought. "that kind of makes the ones to protect you from drowning kind of useless."

"No no, Aoi-san's fine." He didn't know much about Mikio-san, but Keiichi could see that the boy was nervous, and out of sorts here. Being calm was probably the best way to handle this. "Just a friend of mine. He'll likely be fine, but he likes charms and things. A little extra never hurts, you know?"

Pendants. They came from that shop, seemingly, run by that strange man who had a fascination with samurai fact cards.

"I can imagine that would be a problem, yes. When you say pendants were popular...what sorts? I'm not very familiar with this whole charm thing, I'm sorry to say."

Relief washed over Seiji's face.

"oh! okay. um, mostly it was high test scores. oh, um, after Aomori-sensei... protection from misfortune and good health were popular as well."

Tom was there watching quietly. He hadn't had a chance to get to the team and tell them what he had found out about Mikio before now, and announcing it in front of him just seemed like a poor idea. So he sat quietly until they needed him.

After saying goodbye to Mikio-san, Keiichi turned to find Tom watching. Usually, Keiichi knew Tom had good information gleaned from quasi-legal methods.

Leaning down, he whispered in Tom's ear, words short and urgent. "You know something, don't you?"

"Nothing relevent to the topic. It only suggests that Mikio is less suspicious."

Misaki poked her head from behind the group that now gathered and smiled, "Seiji-kun! Hi, I'm okay and here. Um...I think what they want to know is about a specific pendent. It's a wood one, I think we talked about it before? Remember?"

Yoshimi shifted uncomfortably at the back of the group, trying and failing to think of something that she could say to put Seiji at ease (or for a way to bring up that weird rumor he'd heard about...certain people getting killed at).

"We're just curious, is all," she said lamely.

"oh! um, you're here!"

Seiji moved toward Yoshimi quickly, almost scuttling to avoid tripping on the litter on the groud, then remembered he'd left the charm back where he was before and ran back and forth again to retreive it.

"you, um, that phone, right? i-it's important you have something like this for good luck!"

Yoshimi accepted the charm as gratefully as she could in the middle of what was essentially an interrogation, examining it for signs that it was about to turn into a Shadow or blow up or some other unpleasant thing.

"Thank you, Mikio-kun." It was a nice gesture, assuming that it didn't try to kill her somehow. "Yes, thank you. I do need all the luck I can get."

"i read a story, see? it's really, really bad luck to keep something that was owned by someone who got killed because thier ghosts are all angry." Seiji was clearly attemption to look scary as she said this. But he was just pulling faces.

"and, and the ghost takes over your body and uses you to hunt down the person who killed them! it's really bad!"

Why are you saying things that would make you look bad, Seiji-kun?

"oh, but i guess it's mean if the ghosts possessed you they could just follow you around and see who you tried to kill and then they'd know it was the bad guy."

He thought.

"...but courts probably wouldn't accept that as evidence, huh?"

"They wouldn't, no," Keiichi said, taking a step back to the fore, and feeling very much like the protagonist of Gryffon Wrong. Usually, he was very bad at the actual figuring out of important things, but for once, something had struck him.

Looking at the Mikio boy, Keiichi didn't know him well, but it was time to push a bit.

"You said Furukawa-san was killed, right?" Keiichi asked. "I find that most interesting, considering that the school told everyone that Furukawa Shingo died in a car accident."

Moments like this made Keiichi long for...that thing Gryffon had that let him tell when people were lying.

"So, if you think Furukawa got killed...one of two things is true. You're either lying to us...or you know something that no one else does."

He placed a hand on the older boy's shoulder. "I trust you, Mikio-senpai. I trust you to tell us the truth."

Seiji slowly counted to three on his fingers. And thought. And thought. And double checked.

"yeah! i guess i must have." Seiji said, noding enthuseastically. "people talk a lot about why they want charms to protect them."

He turned to Yoshi again, staring at her in a very focussed, unseiji-like manner.

"it's not just the phone you have that belongs to him, is it? um. there's something else, too. i think there's more ghosts around you than i thought."

He smiled again.

"they're probably what's causing all the bad luck and getting stuff stapled to your hand and stuff! um. you might need more than one of those."

More thinking.

"but if you think someone else needs it more i won't be mad if you give it away."

Yoshimi was standing stock-still at the back of the group, sorely regretting her decision to show up for the interrogation. Nothing that Seiji said was making any sense to her, especially the parts about her and Shingo. How could it have been anything but a car accident? And what in the world did he think she had that had belonged to her boyfriend?

"Stop it..." Well and truly creeped out at this point, she took a visible step backwards when he turned to stare at her, wondering in the back of her mind if he could see right through her. It certainly felt like he could. "I-I'm not haunted! And I don't have anything but his phone."

"Yoshi-chan," Misaki moved towards her and rested a hand on her shoulder then looked at Seiji. She wasn't sure what to say, she just hoped that Yoshi could tell that she was worried about her and hoped to keep her calm.

"It'll be okay Yoshi-chan."

Tom took a step forward, and moved between Seiji and Yoshi. Blocking Yoshi from view. He was beginning to wonder about the boy, and wished he'd had the opportunity to travel with him.

"Mikio-san, you didn't answer my question. Did Hikaru talk about the people who've died recently?"

Tom put a finger to his chin. And shrugged. He seemed satisfied with the answer, then turned to the group. Then he paused and looked back at Seiji.

Renju, who had been standing half-behind Keiichi (effectively hiding her thanks to the nearly foot-and-a-half height difference), broke into a full-body shudder at that last sentence. She remembered that "tip" about freezing mice; it was one of the first journal entries she'd seen after restoring hers. And she remembered why it had made her suspicious in the first place.

Which meant that the implications were... If she could write this all off as mere coincidence, she'd be much, much happier. But as it was, that was growing increasingly impossible.
