True, it probably wasn't one of his brighter ideas, venturing into the city on the night of Independence Day. The original plan had been to ride his Harley down a few streets, advertising to the 'normies' that he and other likes him weren't ashamed of what they had become. An exercise of 'freak' independence, as it were. Of course, playing out the impressive scenario in his head was a lot different than doing it for real. In his excitement to be rebellious and "badass," Peter hadn't paused to take into account how many people - normal people, likely many of them drunken antis - would actually be in attendance to New Orlean's fireworks display.
The novelty of the idea wore off as soon as the first beer can struck the back of one of his wings as he drove by. Jeering soon followed, and Peter began to feel fear rising to the surface. Maybe his sole showing of fearlessness, which was nothing more than a vague idea now, was too premature. Maybe he should've waited, rallied together a group of changed folk, and proved their strength that way.
A relatively small group made up of people with varying styles of wings and others whom Peter could only assume were also of the changed variety, spread out over a secluded area of the park. 'Freaks' celebrating together. Had to be safer than facing down antis alone, right?
He parked his bike near the entrance of the park, wanting to keep it within sight to make sure no one stole it or decided to damage it in some way. Most of the bystanders seemed far too preoccupied with a mixture of drinking, talking, or watching the fireworks display. He debated calling his sister, but dismissed that idea almost immediately. As much as he didn't like being alone out here, he didn't want to drag Sam out into a potentially dangerous situation. Besides, she was probably preoccupied with that new boyfriend.
Ferdie was busy elsewhere as well, but that didn't stop Peter from craning his neck to peer over the shoulders of people, looking for sign of his best friend. Company would be a nice thing to have tonight. Yeah, too bad you were so damn excited about trying to impress everyone that you didn't stop and think how stupid your idea really was.
