Ben grinned. He'd struck home, even if only slightly and he was unused enough to being in this sort of situation that it pleased him. "She wouldn't come round to your way of thinking, arsehole, because your way of thinking got her into the job in the first fucking place. Doesn't that tell you anything at all, you idiot? And I don't recall saying anything about babies of any description, or any kind of happy ever after. We live in the same world as everyone else."
He'd spoken as the sound of Ruby's heels had got closer, and he surrendered the gun with no argument. He wasn't really about to shoot Madison anywhere fatal. He just wanted to propose the idea to him. He did, however, note what Madison called Ruby and he shook his head, making a tutting sound at the same time as he was given the gun back. "That's no way to talk to a lady in my hearing," he warned, then listened with a feign of interest as Madison moved onto the topic of his sex life and Delora's past. This was safe ground for Ben and he could relax a little. There was no way Madison could get at him with information he already knew and had come to terms with long ago. "Man, by the time you get to my age, just about everyone has a past. But that's just what it is for her now - her past. Her present is with me, and I'm pretty damn happy with that. You know why? Because it's what SHE chose. Actually, it's what WE chose, and that makes it pretty damn incredible, don't you think?"
