Action Scene: The Slytherin Common Room

"Well would you like to tell us what is going on? Or will we have to figure things out ourselves?" Draco asked, "And I assure that you will not like our methods of procuring information."

McGonagall looked at him with an indifferent expression on her face.

"That's enough Draco," admonished Narcissa, "I am sure the Professor was just getting to that."

Draco looked away.

"Yes Professor," Lucius said with a smirk, "we are waiting."

Lucius looked up, wretching himself away from his thoughts. He needed to stay in the moment, at least while he was around other people. There would be time later to wallow in his own thoughts.

"Draco," he snapped, enjoying the bite on his tongue. "Do you mistake us for Hufflepuffs or something as equally vulgar? We will not shy away from confrontation from anyone, let alone children who meekly follow the herd. We are Malfoys. Hiding away in the dungeons will only prove to the rest of the world that we are guilty of some crime and we are ashamed."

He lifted his chin. "I am certainly not ashamed. Are you?"

Draco stared at his Father wide-eyed. When was the last time he had sounded like himself? He pulled himself together. "No Father, I do not mistake us for Hufflepuffs or any other lower life-form, I simply thought that we needn't have to endure their presence," in what he hoped to be a convincing tone. "Besides what do we have to be ashamed of?"

"Exactly. We have nothing to be ashamed of." He caressed the head of his snake cane in an almost obscene manner. "We will not endure their presence because we do not acknowledge them. They are so far beneath us that it would be like acknowledging insects. But they will notice our presence and bask in our glow. It is only natural as we are Malfoys. And a Half-Blood Prince," he said, the last part to Snape and he nodded his head towards him.

Narcissa took in a breath and a genuine smile lit her face. There was her beloved husband under the withered husk of a man he hid in all year long. "Yes, we are."

Severus nodded back to Lucius, amused by his friend's old mannerisms returning to him.

Draco let a familiar smirk slide onto his face. This was an expression that he had missed in the last year. He stood up, and gave his Father a slight bow in acknowledgment.

"With that settled, I think it is time we head to the Great Hall. Draco," she called out as she faced her son. "Would you run along and retrieve my wand? I feel rather naked without it and I would like to have it in hand before we leave the Common Room."

Draco felt the smirk slid off his face. "Your wand?" he asked, stalling. "Ummm..yeah..ah..well you see," he stattered. He had thought he had more time to think of a plausible story, he didn't think she would ask for it now.

Narcissa narrowed her eyes and her hands fell to her slender hips, eyes flashing. "Draco Lucius Malfoy, what exactly are you stumbling on about? And stand up straight. Your father and I did not raise you this way. Where exactly is. My. Wand?"

Draco almost whimpered, but managed to hold it back. He forced himself to stand straight even though he wanted to cringe. There was nothing for it, he would have to tell her. At least she couldn't kill him, she didn't have her wand. "I'm sorry Mother, Ilostyourwand," he said in a rush, and steeled himself for the resulting explosion.

She leaned forward, her regal pose bearing down on Draco. "I couldn't quite hear you, my beloved son," she said in a sickenly sweet manner, reminiscent of her older sister Bellatrix. "Did you say that you lost my wand?"

Severus flat out smirked as he watched Narcissa play the drama queen. Oh, how he missed the firey passion of the Malfoys. It was good to see it flourishing once more.

Draco could only nod wordlessly. He noticed Sev trying not to laugh over his mother's shoulder. That bastard! He was enjoying this.

At Severus' smirk, he knew it was time to rescue his son from his wife's wrath. "Narcissa love," he said smoothly, easily stepping between her and Draco. "Now is not the time for petty arguments between us. Did you not say you were feeling hungry? Let us head to the Great Hall, feast, and I shall send an owl to Ollivander for replacement wands for all of us. Don't you agree that this is a good idea?" He placed his hand on the small of her back, his thumb caressing her skin through the cloth.

Draco just managed to keep himself from flopping over in relief. Thank Salazar for father's.

She sighed heavily, but she knew Lucius was right. As much as she wanted to wring the neck of her son, it would be useless. Now if they had a spare along with the heir, it would be a different story...

"I concede. Severus, do you think you could lead the way? It has been awhile since I have last walked through these halls without terror flowing through my veins." She shot him a steady gaze, a clear expression that she knew he was mocking her in his head.

Severus bowed low once more, the damnable smirk still on his face. "Of course, Narcissa. If you would follow me." He pressed a light touch to Draco's shoulder as he walked by towards the painting frame.

Draco almost jumped, when he felt Sev's hand on his shoulder. He hurried after him. The plan was to keep Sev between him and Mother. Who cared if Sev still smirking at him? At least he would be safe.
