Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Paige, Pete, Annie, Lewis, Caro, Jeb, Lizzie... and OTA
What: Snow. Lots of snow. Also soup.
Where: Out back, in the field near Pete's trailer.
When: Saturday, around noon.
Rating: G
Status: Incomplete

It had been a long, hard battle, but it was becoming clearer and clearer that it was time to admit defeat. For one, there was a dog eating most of their ammunition. Plus, the other team now had more on its side, resource-wise. Almost everyone on Paige's side had defected to join the enemy. Except for Lewis, who was doing his best to hold the line, and Lizzie, who was doing her best to act like she was really offended that she'd been asked to serve as their cover.

"Lew," she turned to her brother, shaking her head as a snowball sailed past, narrowly missing them. "I think we gotta surrender. We're outnumbered and Bugs keeps eating our snowballs." At the sound of his name, the hound dog looked up from his snowy snack and wagged his tail.

"Y'all are gonna lose anyway," Lizzie commented casually from behind them. She was right. The Russians were going to win. Paige frowned thoughtfully, then looked back at Lew, waiting for his okay. He nodded and she took a deep breath and stood up, arms in the air. As she opened her mouth, another snowball pelted her in the face. She forced a smile, mentally making a note to get Caro back when she least expected it, and announced, "We surrender."

Honestly, Pete was used to being cover, though it was considerably more fun with snowballs even if he hadn't turned metal. If you couldn't handle the game like a man you had no business playing, after all, and the kids were proving that better than anyone. How he'd managed to increase his numbers so quickly, or instilled a mutiny without even doing anything, was beyond him, but that didn't make it any less entertaining. Honestly, he'd been pelted more times than any of them so he really had no idea how he was actually winning, or even if he was actually a member of the team and not just a wall.

"Alright alright alright alright....." Pete's wide grin betrayed him, letting his hand drop very lightly onto Caro's knit hat covered head, officially calling the cease fire. "The enemy's raised the white flag. Our prisoners of war will be taught our ways and be assimilated into our culture."

"What's that mean?" Annie asked, even as she crouched down to gather more snow in her mittens.

"It means we don't have to throw more snowballs at them." Pete replied thoughtfully, laughing a little as she immediately got the idea, standing and letting the beginnings of her next projectile collapse and fall to the ground.

"That assimilation thing's terrifying when you hear it with a Russian accent," Paige informed Pete with a smile, shaking her head as she pulled Lizzie up from where she'd been sitting on the ground.

"We should build a giant snowman," Jeb suggested, digging his glove out from under a pile of snow as another fistful of snow was tossed in his direction from nearby.

"Caro," Paige warned, raising an eyebrow. The girl rolled her eyes and shoved her hands into her coat pockets. Turning back to the others, she glanced down at her watch. It was getting close to lunchtime, but she wasn't hungry at all just yet. Didn't mean that nobody else was, though. "Snowman now, or lunch? Anyone hungry?"

"I thought you liked the accent." Pete mock frowned, standing a little taller as if that would make up for his apparent bruised ego. "You should hear me read someone their Miranda Rights." He wagged his eyebrows a little, though he wasn't sure if he actually knew what came after 'you have the right to an attorney', or if that was even correct as his only experience had been what he'd seen on the television.

"I could eat, or wait. If we're going to make a snowman we should make him really, really big." Pete nodded, glancing down at the kids. The only snowmen he'd built in probably the past decade, or more, had been with his current crew, but he would be very willing to say that no one was too old for that sort of thing. At the very least all the hard work kept you warm. "Think we can make one taller than me today?"

"It's a great accent, Pete," she assured him, following Annie and Lew with her eyes as they started running around and throwing snow for the dogs to catch. It didn't seem like anyone was really hungry just yet, so she shrugged.

The game of snowball fetch stopped when Pete suggested making a huge snowman, and Paige glanced around as her siblings all quickly agreed with the suggestion. Seemed like a giant snowman was the plan.

"Do we have enough snow?" Lew asked, looking around. Paige laughed and tugged at the top of his hat, assessing both the snow and Pete's height before deciding. "I think so. Just barely."

Pete was laughing again, trying hunch down a little in an effort to feign a few inches less in height to make it easier for them, but knew he was being more than a little obvious about it. "I have faith in you guys. Do you want me to help, or stand here as a comparison?"

When the snowballs stopped coming at the two pups, it was Al who trotted up to sniff lightly at his master's leg, potentially wondering if he'd gotten frozen in place somehow with how he was standing. Pete broke out of his stance with a jump and a small shout in the direction of the dog, who bounced back, shocked, then bounded around happily again as if waiting for an encore.

Standing straight again, the big guy looked to everyone else, gesturing with his head farther down the hill toward the large body of water. " We could probably find some good rocks for the mouth and buttons down by the lake."

"You need to help," Annie declared, nodding. The others nodded right along with her, and Paige smiled, then shrugged. "She's right. You have the biggest hands. We're gonna need you to do more than model."

When Pete startled Al, Bugs jumped too, tail wagging as he turned around then plopped down in the snow so that Jeb could give him a belly rub. At Pete's suggestion, Jeb chimed in, "I can go look if you want."

"Why don't we hold off until we know how big it's gonna be," Paige suggested, partially because the rocks would probably just get lost in the snow somewhere along the line anyway, partially because they really didn't know how big it would be... and partially because she really didn't want any of them wandering off just then. The likelihood of something getting to them there was pretty slim, but she wasn't going to let any of the littles go off on their own.

Pete could hardly argue with a swarm of Guthries, especially when they were obviously outvoting him. Conceding, he threw his hands up and nodded in agreement. "I adhere to your demands, captains."

At Paige's suggestion he was happy to agree, thinking along the same line of reasoning she was. "When it gets to that point let me know. I'll pop into the trailer and get one of those tupperware mixing bowls to put them in."

Clapping his hands together and rubbing vigorously, he called out to the others. "Alright, so, where are we starting? Should we make his legs first? Or are we going to just make him have a big bottom like all the other snow men?"
