Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: JP and Bobby
What: mowing snowblowing the colony
Where: Colony grounds
When: Wednesday morning, predawn
Warnings: Harmless innuendo (as always)
Status: Incomplete

The sound of JP's panting filled the room, his long legs poking out from beneath the blanket, twisting around each other as his eyelids twitched, his fingers convulsing a little as he grunted into the empty room. A second later his eyes opened, blinking in confusion into the darkness as the remnants of the dream disappeared, though in his bleary-mindedness he kicked at the blanket as if it were threatening to constrict him, knocking it to the floor. When full consciousness came he released a heavy sigh, leveling out on his back on the bed, staring at the darkness of the ceiling as he regained his composure, his hands moving over his face to rub the feeling back into it, to wake up fully.

Another dream for him to jot down.

When he could manage it he sat up, hanging on the edge of the bed with his feet on the floor for a few seconds as he contemplated turning the light on, moving, something. He wasn't sure what he wanted to do, but going back to sleep wasn't an option now that the adrenaline was pumping so hard. He glanced at the side clock, grunting as the digital numbers blared out the unreasonably early hour. He was a little mad at himself that he didn't ask Kurt to stay the night, though he felt that he was monopolizing his friend a little too much, especially with Bobby being so....

The thought of his partner made him grunt again and he finally stood up, making his way through the familiar room with little light to go by, entering the bathroom. The nightlight in the smaller room was enough for him to see by, and he turned the faucet on, dragging handful after handful of water over his face before drying it off with his towel. He glanced at himself in the mirror before opening the medicine cabinet, pulling out what remained of his container of asprin for the headache he knew would be coming on soon. Taking three, he shut cabinet again, dragging himself back into the bedroom toward the window to see what the damage the snow from the night before had caused.

When he poked two fingers through the blinds and glanced out, his eyebrows went up at the amount of white he saw, piled on top of the already impressive height that had accumulated over the past few days. It was pretty though, but it made him wonder how difficult it would be to drive into the city for work that day if Bobby wasn't feeling up to it. Or if Bobby was feeling on his game at all. Monday had been quiet, awkward, and cold for reasons that went far beyond the weather. He didn't quite know what was going on, and Bobby didn't seem interested in discussing it, so their interactions since then had been sparse at best. It was a struggle, honestly, considering how much they depended on one another for one of them to brush off the other like that, and JP wished he'd put more effort into finding out what was going on. Hell, had he done something? That thought had crossed his mind a few times, but Bobby was usually fairly good about letting him know.

Wait, was that Bobby out there clearing snow?

His eyes focused on a figure amidst a flurry of snow down the path, as if someone was using a snowblower, but there was no noise other than the gentle shifting of the powdery material. That had to be Bobby. What was he doing up so early? In the dark? Doing...work? His eyebrows furrowed for a second before he reasoned that if anyone could get the job done it was him, but still.

With sleep being out of the question, and with his paranoia rising as he thought more about Bobby and the issues of the past few days, he did what JP normally did in those situations. He decided to crowd Bobby for whatever reason he could think of until they were either better, completely worse, or at least until he knew what was going on. He knew being pushy and antsy was the easiest way to get people annoyed with him, but when the paranoia rose that much he honestly just stopped caring. Besides, it was dark and probably hard to see where most of the snow issues were, so maybe Bobby really did need help.

He dressed in something warm, but easy to move in, figuring he was going to be zipping around. The minute he opened the window the rush of cold air made him gasp, shoving his gloves into his coat pocket for later use as he had a feeling he would need them. For now, he needed his fingers free. Floating out the window, he closed it quietly behind him, then slipped through the air over where the figure was working, seeing that it was, in fact, Bobby. He smiled a bit to himself as he stopped to hover, holding both hands out toward the ground as he started to illuminate the area with them, finally calling down once he'd created enough light. "That a little better, early bird?"

Bobby hadn't been able to sleep, but that was nothing new. With the storm ragging outside and the soft lilting french accompanying a melancholy melody drifting around his room, he'd stood at the window and watched it come down. It didn't take long for him to notice however that snow was the least of their problems with this storm. Freezing rain coming down in sheets and coating the colony in dense, black ice.

He'd debated going out during it, but in the end just waited for it to finish before making a quick note of it to anyone else who may be up, or considering it, for the sake of the colony. It'd be a lot of work. And might be rough on the equipment, if some of their stronger members took to the job and used the force necessary to remove it as best they could. He was already planning on handling it, and besides, it would be easier than breathing for him, and spare them having to look for more shovels.

He wasn't aware of how long he'd been outside. He'd just fallen into it completely. Thinning ice, moving snow, lowering the temperature here, moving the moisture there. It was...remarkably - daresay blissfully - peaceful. Which was a feeling he'd not had in so long, he didn't even recall how to enjoy it, other than to simply continue.

He felt him before he saw or heard him. Jean-Paul spent so much time at his side, watching his back, and keeping cool, steady eyes on the horizon, Bobby'd know him anywhere. Even if he didn't disturb the atmosphere when he flew.

"Look who's talking," he replied, shifting slightly to adjust his motions to the lit area. "What're you doing out of bed? And in the cold no less."

"I'm French-Canadian, Sir." JP replied indignantly, the light fading out for a brief moment as he folded his arms over his chest for effect. "We're a winter people. I think I can handle it." His hands returned to their work as a smile crossed his face. "Besides, if I get too cold you'll just have to make me coffee when we're done." He spoke as if Bobby had no choice in the matter, though JP wouldn't have minded making it himself when the time came.

"Couldn't sleep." Came the reply to the original question, finally. A simple answer, noting that JP didn't particularly want to talk about it. He hadn't written the dream down but wasn't going to worry about it. He honestly didn't want to think about it anymore anyway. "It was either come out here to keep you company, or be bored as hell until we go out later."

He floated along as Bobby moved, dropping down a little closer, but still out of the way of the moving snow. "How long have you been at this?"

"You may be Canadian, Jean-Paul. But you are the whiniest, cold hatingist Canadian I have ever met." His mouth quirked up slightly in one corner though as the light returned.

He nodded at his reason. It wasn't all that uncommon in the colony overall. It wasn't something they needed to address, it was just something that was. The work still got done. Everybody was still going. Handling it in their own ways.

Bobby leaned back in his stance as JP drifted closer. It was partly instinct, some habit, and mostly for comfort. "I don't know," he replied with a sigh. "A while?" He shrugged, arms spreading slightly, sending snow drifts in opposite directions.

"Hey, I happen to love winter. You know, when I can go inside whenever I want and hide in a bunch of blankets. I'm best served at room temperature." The addendum wasn't unreasonable, right? After all, he was only human. "Not everyone can hop into a snowbank in their skivvies and survive indefinitely."

When Bobby spoke again, JP glanced over, the former traces of humor gone from his face as he regarded his friend thoughtfully. "What's been going on? You've been....different." There was a small pause before he continued on. "Not that it's completely unusual for us to switch gears like that, but when it happens you don't usually treat me strangely."

He waited a second before adding in the buffer of humor, his own defensive strategy in slightly uncomfortable situations even if it wasn't always the best way to go. "My ego is wounded that I'm being suddenly grouped with everyone else." He managed to look playfully dejected for a few seconds before the seriousness came back. "Is there anything you want to talk about?"

"I just..had a rough weekend, that's all," he replied, not wanting to go into how much it had hurt when Annie had hugged him with all her might and proclaimed in the bright innocence of a happy child that she loved him. It wouldn't have hurt at all, if he didn't also know it was true.

He'd paused as he spoke, an outward reflection of inner turmoil. As if he'd needed to stop everything just to process his reply. He took up again, as soon as the words were out of his mouth, as if it hadn't meant much at all. As if he weren't barely holding it together by invisible strings.

"And your ego can take it," he replied, going with the comforting reassurance of their habitual verbal sparring. "It's certainly big enough. And it likes it rough sometimes. It revels in all that attention."

JP's gaze was exuding the fact that Bobby's answer wasn't really an answer, but if that was what he was going to offer for now the Canadian wasn't going to push it. As it was, with how they were talking it seemed as if things were going to run their usual course and return somewhat to normal, hopefully.

"It likes the verbal make-up sex," he replied flatly before breaking out into a wider grin. They were both weird, especially with each other, and the more it happened the more he loved it. "Just remember that I'm the one that has to deal with it when it's being a whiny bitch. Me and everyone around me."

He was low enough now that his toes could graze lightly over the surface of the snow, watching the line they traced before he lifted up a few more inches. "It's gonna be rough traveling later." He paused for a moment and before he could help himself a uncharacteristic look of excitement crossed his face. "Oooo, wonder if we could take the snow mobiles out."

"If you'd just let it get some with regularity, you wouldn't have to deal with its PMS," he replied, shoulders relaxing. The back and forth was normal, easy. It eased something tight inside his chest that had been lurking there for days; releasing toxins that kept him in seclusion mode for everyone's benefit.

"I don't need one," he smirked, before gesturing down the length of his body. "I'm the best ride there is." He quirked an eyebrow at him, a grin forming.

"I'm completely taking that into context with the rest of the conversation." JP replied informatively before he grinned a bit, using his tongue to make growl/purr noise against the roof of his mouth. "I'll need a list of references and it will have to be notarized before I believe that." He suddenly felt a lot more comfortable now, as if sleeping would have been a lot easier if he'd been up in his room near his bed. Maybe before they left later in the morning he could swing in for a nap.

"Anyway, I can't really give my ego the attention it needs by myself. It has to be stroked by others." He wagged his eyebrows suggestively before laughing. "God are we thirteen year olds."

"I'm sure Hank would enjoy handling that one," he remarked, grinning wide at him. Jean-Paul laughed before he could get another innuendo in however, and he laughed with him, though it was lighter. "No. We're just two horny gay men with absolutely no-one interesting enough around to play with."

"I strongly disagree. I think Hank would be potentially awkward and confused about handling that one, so we're going to go to someone else." JP replied, sternly eying Bobby as best as he could without breaking out into laughter again, though the amusement hung openly in his eyes. "Correction. I'm more than interesting enough to play around with. I just like making you stare at my assets all day, drooling all over yourself." He wagged his hips a little for emphasis before adding. "Makes me feel pretty."

"Oh please, Jeep, you're a total cock tease! Working with you is like hiring a million dollar escort. It's all pretty to look at, but in the end, you're still going to bed alone. And that my friend is why you never get any. You are way high maintenance. And most guys, they just want it. Patience is only a virtue when you have it to begin with. And for you, a guy's got to have it by the ocean full."

"It's true, I do know a thing or two about the cock." JP sighed conversationally and nodded, continuing to float ahead. "But there's absolutely nothing wrong with making a guy work for it, if the getting's good. Which it most certainly is." He continued pointedly. "Besides, patience and stamina often go hand-in-hand, and if a guy can't show me one before he's ready to show off the other then he's probably not a keeper."

"Sometimes I don't either," he replied thoughtfully. "But you know my stance, even if it's sappy and stupid, and kind of ridiculous considering everything else." He shrugged. He didn't need to explain to Bobby again how even with the end of the world he really just wanted to settle in with someone, knowing where that conversation would lead, and how depressing it eventually got. "Who knows, maybe me being patient will eventually pay off. One can hope."

In an effort to keep the mood light, he patted a hand against his rearend. "Maybe wearing tighter pants would help. You think?"

He looked - JP had a sweet ass, it was impossible not to; especially when he put it on display like that - but didn't respond. Or at least, not in the way the other mutant was likely expecting.

JP was quiet for a few seconds, not quite capable of relaying everything that was going through his brain at Bobby's confession. The gears were obviously turning, but at the end of it all he could only look at his friend and offer a supportive smile. "Couldn't hurt to at least take a break from it for a while, right? Figure out what it is that you really do want."

He folded his arms over his chest again, though was able to still give off a moderate amount of light with one hand. He was glad that there was at least less light for his face to be visible. "If it means anything I'd like to see you settle down with someone at some point. I know your whole take on....everything, but I think you might end up really happy. I mean.....it's important that you are. Happy."

JP knew he got less articulate and easy to understand when he was being so blatantly honest and personal, even when it was around someone he trusted as much as Bobby. He couldn't help it, a drawback from being so emotionally distant even prior to the outbreak. "I think that if you can stop and realize that you deserve to be happy and that it's okay to be, you will be. Or you'll find things that will make you that way."

He shook his head before adding. "And I know we've been through this before and you're opposed to the idea of being close and losing things and I get that, and I'm not trying to be pushy. You just deserve more than what you give yourself a lot of the time."

Bobby sat in the snow. Not the smooth, casual, powers tinted motion he generally affected. But an outright plop, as if his legs had suddenly stopped working and gravity went into overtime. It was natural, easier to just keep going with the motion, and suddenly he was sprawled in a snow pile like a forgotten scarf.

"I don't," he replied, voice rough with emotion. "That's the whole point." He shook his head, inhales coming closer together. "Don't try and argue it, Jean-Paul, we both know it. What I have right now is more than what I ever deserved. And happiness is a fucking joke."

"You know I think you're wrong." JP sighed, moving lower again until he was sitting Indian-style in the air only a few inches away from where Bobby was. He fought the urge to plop in next to him, noting that he hadn't really dressed particularly well for that. "You deserve better. Everyone does. Even I do, not that any of us know what to do with that."

He shook his head. "I still don't know where all of this self-loathing comes from. You didn't do anything. And us being in danger more than other people doesn't make us any less deserving. You get your head up your butt with all of this stuff and it's frustrating, because I know that someday you're going to work things out for yourself. The whole 'we could die and leave everyone behind' shtick only goes so far until it's like....you're just shoving things back." He paused before adding. "Denial. Not just a river in Egypt and all that. I love you to death but you've got a bad, bad case of it. Until you find the off-switch you're just going to keep going in circles with yourself over this stuff."

Bobby blinked up at the sky, arms spreading, palms up. "I don't know how to stop," he told him, feeling everything from his throat to his abs squeeze shut. "I can't stop. I just...sometimes I just wish...My whole life it's been one crappy turn after another. And the best thing that ever happened to me, was this." He raised both arms above his head and looked at his hands. "Best and worst. I used to think it was a blessing. I never thought of it as curse. And now...now it's just easier."

He shifted forms and sat up. Laying a hand to his chest he added, "This doesn't hurt. I don't hurt. In this form I'm...not whole, but...I make more sense. I don't need to eat. I don't need to breathe. Or sleep. I just exist, like a glacier." He shifted back, trying to confront it. The thing he avoided. "For years, everyone had some opinion about me. I wasn't serious enough, but I was open. Now I'm closed, and I'm too serious. And it's still wrong. I'm stuck." His hands dropped into his lap. "I just...this hurts so much." He sniffed, as his diaphragm contracted. His head shook slowly, fingers twining, holding tight. "I'm just...trying to make this, that and that this and..." He tilted his head back, staring up at the darkness above them. "I don't want to be alone," he whispered. "But I can't be who I was. He cared too much, and if I go back...I won't survive."

With that, JP dropped onto the same pile of snow Bobby was occupying, settling on the other man's knees without asking though that did little for the comfort level. Snow went up his pant legs and under his socks, covering his hands as he steadied himself, then looked directly at Bobby's face. Leaning forward, he planted a long, slightly rough kiss on the side of Bobby's slightly scruffy cheek, then leaned back again his eyes staring into the other man's.

He leaned in again, this time his forehead resting against Bobby's, his hands tugging idly at Bobby's shirt. "I don't know really who you were before all this happened. I know you now. I know the you now better than you do sometimes. I've seen this you be happy, I've seen this you care. I know that you can do it because I've already watched you. You're a good man and there's nothing you can do to change that or cover it up, even if you turn into popsicle. I don't want you to be anything but you. This...'glacier', as you put it, isn't the Bobby I know. The Bobby from now. The you now, not the you from before, whoever the heck that guy was. Bobby is Bobby."

He blinked in confusion as Jean-Paul basically climbed into his lap - though he had no such delusions that it was anything more than a way to keep from getting wet; the man could be a bit of a priss at times. Then stared as he was kissed, eyelashes brushing the bridge of the Canadian's nose for a brief moment as he set his brow against him. Bobby's arms went around him, hands closing in the fabric of his jacket almost on autopilot. As he spoke, Bobby frowned, but his embrace continued to tighten about him.

He was all set to argue, but it was difficult - and he knew Jean-Paul was well aware of this - to argue with him when he was sparing a few moments to caress him. Regardless of all the rumors, they were not in fact a couple, nor were they hiding some deep seeded desire for one another - that they teased each other with on a daily basis. They did however, honestly care for one another in a deep, profound - possibly unhealthy and disturbing to some - way.

So he didn't argue. At least, for the moment, he let Jean-Paul have the last word on the subject. One hand slid up under his jacket, just to take in the warmth of his body. The other moving up to cup the back of his head. Bobby's head tilted, lips catching the corner of his partner's mouth in a brief, but lingering kiss.

JP didn't quite count having the last word as a victory, but he would settle for it for now. Chances were they would have this discussion again at some point, but until then he was happy just to have Bobby back. When the hand came up his back, his body arched a little at the coldness, but he didn't move away. It was nice just having it be there.

"Your knees are knobby." He said flatly after a few seconds of silence, though a smile curled his lips a few seconds later. "And now I want a hot shower and a hot cup of tea and a nap." His fingers played lightly at Bobby's abdomen for a second. "We should get this done, and then you should nap with me."

"The shower and the tea, you can go solo on," he replied, shifting slightly so Jean-Paul was settled less on his knees, and more prominently against his thighs. He grinned, rubbing noses for a moment before adding, "But a nap..." And it wouldn't be them back to normal if someone didn't say it. "I'd love to climb into bed with you, Jeep."

"Wouldn't everyone?" JP replied without even having to think about it, his grin returning. The problem with Bobby taking him up on his offer to nap was that now he had to muster the will to move, which he currently didn't have, so he stayed where he was for the moment.

"I hope you can figure things out," he said as a last note to their conversation, speaking genuinely. "I know you can figure things out." He spoke the last line more emphatically, with a nod, planting one last kiss on Bobby's forehead before he pulled himself up, offering his hands to help Bobby only for his own feet to sink five inches into the snow a second later.

"Ho-shi-" He managed to catch himself, laughing brightly at his own lack of grace. "This is why I fly."

He would have kept flirting - especially as JP was already getting undressed so handily in frame - but he had a point. The more time they spent fooling around - or well, not fooling around - the less time they could just lay in the dark and hold each other. Something more significant than co-existing. Maybe he'd even get a little sleep out of it.

Bobby winked cheekily at him, in lieu of a comment about his impromptu, unintended strip tease and gave him a half cocked salute. "Just be properly attired for this snuggle session, Monsieur."
