Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
The alert had come in to security in the early afternoon, from the radio they'd installed in the farming colony they traded with. Few details had come through, other than that a group of well armed and organized raiders had attacked and had almost breached the wall, before the transmission cut out. Storm had ordered an emergency recall sent to the team in the field while she assembled a team to send as reinforcements...and hoped they wouldn't be too late.

The smoke had been visible from miles away in the clear air, and the sound of gunfire and explosions had grown louder and louder as they'd approached. Raiders were still holding the smoking hole in the wall they'd obviously entered through, whether trying to prevent escape or the interference of reinforcements...or just watching in case the chaos attracted the infected, it was hard to tell. There were around ten of them there, assault rifles held almost lazily as most of them kept more of an eye on what was going on inside the compound than out.

Farther around the wall a small group of defenders were holed up in the guard house, trying to keep the raiders from forcing the gates. A half dozen trucks, buses and SUVs were pulled up just outside, most with roof-mounted weaponry, obviously intended to be loaded with the supplies they'd come to steal once they managed to force a way in.

The colony's storehouse was the sight of the fiercest fighting, though, as most of the colony had holed up in the most defensible building within the walls. The windows were barricaded and snipers had taken position on the roof, taking shots at any of the attackers who dared to show themselves. There was plenty of cover in the area, though, and a small group had managed to reach the relative safety of the doors. Out of the direct line of fire of any of the defenders, they were readying an explosive charge to blow it off its hinges. Other buildings were already burning, and bodies marked the progress of the fighting from the wall to the gate and storehouse. It was a good bet the only reason the raiders hadn't simply blown this building and all its occupants to hell already was the fact that they wanted - needed - its contents intact.

[OOC: almost all the raiders are wearing body armor and helmets, they're armed with an assortment of assault rifles and other guns, as well as grenades and...really, be creative. Whatever they could have found lying around a gun store or stolen off someone else in the wake of the apocalypse. They're organized, coordinated, and determined, and don't care who or how many they kill to achieve their objective. There are 9 at the initial hole in the wall, another 13 trying to take the gates, and 15 are trying to break into the colony's storehouse. They're being resisted by colonists with guns, but they're mostly inexperienced in any kind of serious combat and lack armor as well. There are at least a dozen bodies scattered around, some raiders but most colonists. Please use a separate sub-thread for each team and have at it. Orders are to use deadly force.]

It took a special kind of lazy coward to attack a mostly unarmed farming colony, but Raven wasn't at all surprised that someone had. In times of trouble, people often resorted to their more base instincts, prime among which was the instinct to do whatever was necessary to survive. Sometimes that meant assembling a group to rape and pillage. Unfortunately, the intended recipients of the attack just happened to have friends. Though Raven completely understood and tended to live by the same instinct that was driving the raiders, the fact that they were doing something that would impact her survival made their actions absolutely inexcusable. The slaughtering of innocents wasn't exactly a point in their favor, either.

Once the team had been assembled, Raven had grabbed equipment and colony plans and headed out, skimming the maps in the truck and quickly coming up with a plan of action. Given the situation and the little bit of information she knew of the attackers, Raven made the assumption that they were there for a little bit more than just the colony's womenfolk, fine as they may have been. While they were still a fair distance away from the colony, she started the briefing. Shifting the map so that the others could see, she pointed to it and handed out the orders.

"We're doing this in groups of two. Pryde, LeBeau, you're taking the front gate. The transmission said that there was a breach in the wall, but they're going to need roads to get trucks in. Make sure they can't do that. Foley and I will be inside," she pointed at the colony's main storage building, "here. By now they've probably figured out that that's where the goods are. Wisdom, Kurt, you're on the wall. Find the breach and keep it clean."

She leaned back so the others could look at the map without her in the way. From where they were, she could already see the smoke coming from the colony, and they didn't want to get much closer in the truck. There was no way to know if the attackers had people watching the perimeter, and the element of surprise was definitely something they wanted on their side.

"They're armed, so be careful. Be alert. Kill them. Don't hesitate, just do it. Quickly. Once we've taken care of them, we'll be moving injured civilians to the store house to treat them. Keep your radio on at all times." She turned to Kurt and nodded. "We're parking about a mile and a half out and you're taking us in. You'll have to look for the breach, but don't linger in one place for too long. We don't know how fast they are or how many guns they have." Glancing around the group, she raised an eyebrow. "Questions?"

As glad as Remy was to be out and actually doing something, let alone something that involved a little action, being briefed was boring. And to have to be teamed up? Remy worked better alone. Always had and always would. Especially after that whole incident with his cousin. But he'd play by their rules, and this was a nice way to stretch his legs. Get the hell out off the grounds and have a little fun.

Remy didn't know who Pryde was, but it didn't take much to figure that out considering that he already knew who Raven and Pete were, had met Kurt on the way in and saw that yellow kid during that horrible decontamination experience. The only question that he really had about her was what she could do and that entailed weaknesses because it didn't take much to figure out that if anything happened to her that Pete would be holding him responsible. Not that Remy minded. Hell, he would hold himself responsible. Remy wasn't the kind to leave a woman out in a dangerous position if he could help that. Men? Perhaps, and especially if they could handle themselves. But he had a different version of honor.

But then having heard Raven ask about questions, it wasn't like Remy could help himself really. How could he? That was far too open ended. Smirking he just decided to be a royal pain in the ass and raise his hand a bit. "So do I need be countin' dese guns I blow up den? So we can get dis count? Or just de bodies I blow up den?" It almost seemed like a legitimate question, even if he was being a cocky ass about it.

She had nothing against being paired with Remy Lebeau, persay, it was just that Kitty knew less about him than literally any other person in the van. And it wasn't that she didn't trust him, it was just that she trusted every single other person in that van more. Even Raven. Gee, she thought, how the world has turned upside down.

She could feel the tension in the car like a physical force and wished that she could slip into phase just for the zen of it. Even Pete had a vibe and she half-wondered if he'd give her some Hardened Old Bastard advice. Remy was the only one who really seemed at ease and she didn't know quite what to make of it.

For her part, Kitty had her game-face. Not one to panic or freak out, she'd been riding in contemplative silence until Raven spoke up. If killing folks was the order of the day, she'd do it and keep her reservations private. Of course she knew it was worse to injure someone who couldn't get medical care or to deal with prisoners in a survival situation. But that didn't mean she had to be excited by the prospect.

Like Remy seemed to be. She resisted shooting Raven a 'why didn't you put me with Kurt' glare and instead looked determinedly out the window.

"Just try not to blow up anything we can use," She said to the passing trees, before turning to look directly at Remy, "I can disable their vehicles without wrecking them."

She phased her hand through the seat in lieu of a wordy explanation.

Well, Raven was a sadistic bitch. Not that Pete wasn't well aware of that before now. Although it made sense, pairing him with Wagner for stemming the breech of the colony wall. He'd been to the human colony frequently, so he was trying to figure out which weak point might have been compromised.

Luckily, in a battle, Wisdom likely wasn't going to say anything unseemly to Nightcrawler about Kitty. It wasn't impossible, but much less likely on account of concentrating on staying alive and killing the invading raiders.

LeBeau's cheeky question got a snort from the Brit. "Let Kit disable the vehicles," he pointed out. "And remember what happened the last time you set off someone's gun?" Wisdom turned his attention to Kitty. "He's explosion happy, kitten. Watch yourself."

Which was as close to a sentimental warning as he could spare. As worried as he was that this was her first actual battle and how it would affect her afterwards, he wouldn't show any doubt in her at all. Not that he had much doubt. Hopefully, she'd take the aftermath better than he had when he'd taken lives the first time.

As for useful questions, he had one. "Did they give us any idea which side of the wall the breach is on?" he asked. Not that it would be that hard to find, but a direction would be useful at least. It was worth asking.
