Mao’s grown up in Hell’s Kitchen to a single mother, since her father, an aspiring actor just one of the many disappeared soon after he decided that the routine of family life was too dull for his artistic personality. Ever since she was little, Mao tried to make it easier on her mom, excelling in all subjects in school, doing the chores and trying not to get into trouble. But when she saw that despite her efforts her mother had to take up another job to support them barely staying at home, and leaving her to her aunt, Mao found her way to earn the money they needed to pay the rent. It started innocently in school playing cards with the guys with minimal bets. When she realized that school gambling was getting too easy and after gaining the courage, she decided to take it seriously and being only 17, together with a tall and broad schoolmate, whom she paid a tenth of her profits to keep her company, she ventured out in the dark salons in her neighborhood. Her natural intelligence, good visual memory and poker face showing emotions only enough to deceive the opponent worked in her favor and in time earned her the respect of older players, making her a name in the underground circles. Eventually she found a mentor who agreed to teach her even more tricks and pay her well if she'd work for him.
Now Mao is 22 years old, the only girl working at a small bowling alley, doing everything from serving the drinks to giving the bowling shoes. Though she doesn’t have that much to do as most of the customers don’t come here to roll the ball. The place is just a cover for an underground gambling place. No drugs are allowed and if someone's had too much alcohol and gets violent two well-built men will "politely" escort him out of the building. It’s all for the good game and for the money. The men at the alley respect her and treat her as their little sister. And occasionally use her as their card up the sleeve if a client with too much money on his hands appears that they can't beat. The only person who can beat her on a game of cards now is her boss and mentor who’s retired from the business.
Despite the nature of her job, Mao is a very cheerful, optimistic and outgoing girl who sometimes likes to be silly. She loves sports and being outdoors. She wants to change her life and even if she loves the game she wants to put her intelligence to better use in the near future and go to college to study law. But for now she’s saving all the money she can earn and takes care of her mom who doesn’t need to work any more. They have now moved to a better neighborhood together with Mao’s dog, Chucky.
