Background:
Having two illegal immigrants as his parents Hangeng literally is a fob, born on the boat on the way to America that was in their parents eyes the land of money, freedom, a better world for them to live in and where they could be happy.
The two together with their new born an older daughter and son moved into a small apartment in the heart of China Town where two years later another son was born. Because he was brought up in China town, never having been outside of that part of New York Han Geng barely spoke English by the age of seven. He only knew a very basic words but that was it mostly to get annoying tourists off his back. It was at that age his wings began to grow, only small of course and by that time you couldn't even call them wings. Han Geng being a small child who had no idea what the hell was wrong with him and what it was growing on his back naturally freaked out like any other person would. He went to his mother, an already unstable woman who worked more than was good for her didn't freak out visibly when her crying son came to her asking what was wrong with him and showing her the start of his wings on his back. She told him to go to bed, to not talk to anyone about this, not even his father or siblings and just sleep that everything was gonna be fine in the morning.
That night his mother came in his room trying to suffocate him with a pillow thinking it was better to put Han Geng out of his misery than live his life with this curse, whatever it may be. She didn't succeed in killing him, in his struggle for air he actually managed to take hold of his lamp on the bed side table and knock her unconscious with it. Without checking if she was okay he just ran, escaped from his home and out of China Town.
A week he spend on the street, not wanting to go home, afraid of what he might have done or what they might do to him. He ended up stealing, sleeping in a carton box and thinking his life would eventually end here as New York City wasn't the safest of places. It was one day where Hangeng was going through a dumpster at one of the homes in a quiet street that he got caught by the woman who lived there. She was around her forties, living on her own as her husband had died of a heart attack. Instead of chasing him away she took him in his house, asking him why he was going through his dumpster. Naturally he couldn't answer her and only cried, desperate and not knowing what to do being only seven years old.
She took him in, taking care of him even if he distanced himself from her, throwing tantrums whenever she came to close, not letting her see him without any clothes on and refusing to take off his jacket even when being inside. Eventually she managed to find out about his secret but unlike his mother she saw it as a blessing, that he was special. She helped him deal with being different, hired a private teacher who was a friend of hers and also Chinese so he could learn English but maintain his native tongue. Due to his wings growing the older he got he could not go to school, he couldn't even go outside and play, forced to stay hidden behind closed doors. When he neared his teenage years he began to rebel again, hating himself, angry all the time and it was in his anger he found out he could contract his wings inside of his body. It was a painful process and he only managed to do it for a few minutes before they sprouted out again where he also found out that the part where his wings contracted and sprouted out again was the only spot on his body that healed at an abnormal speed. To him it was a bit of hope and from that day onward he began to train himself to keep his wings inside of his body in the hopes of leading a normal life. With a year passing he managed to keep them in for two hours and it was then he finally took upon the lessons of martial arts he had been dying to take ever since his father had taught him a bit of it when he was younger.
He fell in love with the sports, training twice a week eventually joining in competitions as he had found out martial arts had helped him in building up a larger tolerance to the annoying feeling of wings pressing against his skin when he kept them in. He finished high school through home schooling but instead of going to college he focused on martial arts solely, training twice as much as he had been and even still when being at home.
By the time he turned twenty he got offered a job at the gym he trained at as an martial arts instructor. It was his dream job, he loved every single minute of it. He could keep his wings in for a day now, able to lead a normal life as possible have a job, socialize and finally blossom up. But it all came falling back down when the gym he worked at ended up bankrupt, leaving him on the street.
He joined a job agency taking one temporarily job after the other and now by the age of 24 he is starting a job as a receptionist at an escort service. He doesn't like it but he needs the money and he figures it's just him being a receptionist, nothing wrong with that.
Hangeng is a sweet guy, maybe a bit too sweet at times, always there for the people he cares about ready to do whatever they ask from him. He loves to hang out with his friends or cook together with his foster mother who he sees as his real mother and even calls her mom. He is a terrible dancer and tries to avoid going on the dance floor as best as he can. Hangeng sees himself as straight but wouldn't say no if he met a guy who is able to capture his attention/heart. So maybe a little bi-curious ;)
