It was over. They said it was over. They promised it was over. Every day, for the last week and a half, for a few hours each day, Hannah was subjected to The Box. It wasn't the first time she'd been put in there, but it was the most often they'd ever done it. They claimed it was for work, that being in that place allowed to her reach out further, to block other external threats from hacking in to the island. And while she went along with it, Hannah knew it was all bullshit. Whatever they were trying, it had nothing to do with things off island. Suspending her in something akin to the cloud was some fucked up experiment they were trying on her. Maybe they'd try to do it with the others. Maybe they were going to try to delete her. Could they even do that? Hannah felt like anything was possible.
But today... freedom. She was given not one, but two days off, which was nearly unheard of since landing on the island. She was mentally and physically exhausted, but when the rest of the barracks was up and out to work, Hannah shuffled along in line as well. Wolfing down her breakfast, she headed out into the sunlight and for the beach. That was the furthest she could get away from her workplace. Maybe it would give her some peace of mind.
Seated near where the surf washed ashore, she'd tossed her shoes off and dug her toes deep into the sand. Hannah needed to reconnect with reality, with life, with the world. But even as she did physically, she couldn't stop the almost involuntary mumbling under her breath. Code. All code. But it wasn't real language, human language. She needed to get her real self-back before she got lost in the web for good.
