She might have clung to him a little longer this time than she would have in the past. There was more to appreciate now. Plus he didn’t seem quite as squirmy about getting away this time, so she might have taken just a little bit of advantage of that fact. Lottie was a hugger, and he was letting her, so she was gonna.
“Soon. We can get started soon. But not today.” She leaned back far enough to grin at him. “I’m making cookies today.”
Then her smile faded as she wrinkled her nose, remembering why she was making them. Maybe she shouldn’t tell him, but Lottie had never been one that was particularly good at subterfuge. Outright lying, she sucked at. To the point where there really wasn’t a point in her making the attempt. Perhaps it was a subconscious thing. She really didn’t like being untruthful, so when she attempted it, she almost sabotaged herself in the process. Whatever the reason, she was a poor liar, and keeping something from somebody was lying by omission in her book.
Besides, it was Dei.
“Okay,” she admitted without prompting. “I’m making cookies as an I’m-sorry for Nemmy. But I think we could probably eat the first batch to make sure they’re up to par. Don’t want to give bad cookies as an apology, right? I’ve got cold milk to go with them…”
