“I figured. He dances around subjects he doesn't like,” Taweret sighed. “Though, I'm sure you know that all too well.” She took a drink of coffee, set her cup down and folded her hands together. “There is never a need to apologize for being blunt with me, no matter the subject matter. But both my work... and to and extent, my husband's... figure into that worry of Loki's.”
The Egyptian leaned back a bit in her chair. “I will do you the favor of answering any question I can and being direct in my answers.” Which she fully intended to do, after she answered the first couple. “The easy answer to your first question... is that I'm a midwife.” Taweret gave a pause, just to let that sink in that it was only a high-level synopsis of what she did. “There is a lot more, of course, in terms of a woman's fertility and sexuality... but my reverence has all been far more in my unrestrained protection of women and children, at any cost.”
She let another few beats pass.
“There are terrible creatures here, demons... and such. They prey on the weak and defenseless. I have seen things, dear, in my long years that cannot ever be unseen. Bes... has great skill in fighting those creatures, he was often summoned for it. Before he and I were acquainted, I was doing both midwifery and defense simultaneously. But, working together... success was higher, but never guaranteed.” Taweret sighed. “I will spare you the details of things we have seen, for man can do far worse than any demon ever can, and those are things we are not prepared for. Things called Biblical now. There are reasons Bes and I have no children of our own...”
Pausing she leaned forward again and sipped at her coffee. “We've just claimed all of them that we find as our own to protect from the evils we can. Are we loud, over-the-top... crass? Yes. But that is the only way to keep living when you deal with the horrors we do every day. And sometimes I come home, as has happened recently, worn... tired... lamenting that I couldn't get somewhere soon enough and again had to escort those far too young to the gates of the Underworld... and those words are falling out of my mouth before I even realize your husband is sitting on the couch.” Taweret frowned.
“And while he understands that even Bes and I have limitations... he has expressed concern that you may not have grieved properly.” Which meant, as Taweret was implying, that Loki was concerned her work would unintentionally trigger or upset Sigyn.
