Lottie nodded as she listened, because she always did when Thoth talked. Sometimes it was because she was learning new things. Sometimes it was because she wanted to encourage him to continue speaking, though he really didn't need it. Sometimes, like tonight, it was because she not only understood, but agreed.
"Exactly," she said aloud. "Look at what happened in this country with Prohibition. While it did cut down on alcohol consumption, it didn't really stop it, it just sent it underground and paved the way for one of the bloodiest gang wars in the country's history as the criminal element oversaw the production and sale of alcohol rather than the law abiding companies that had before. I think the only people that were happy with Prohibition were the Temperance Movement."
Then she shrugged, "Of course the Temperance Movement, at least at the turn of the century, right before the 18th amendment was passed, it became more about women's rights and a way for women to exert some kind of political pressure since they couldn't vote than about actually making people into teetotalers."
Thoth was the only person that Lottie had conversations like this with on a regular basis. It wasn't that she couldn't have intellectual discussions with others in her life, it was that the Egyptian tended to bring out a more speculative side of her. Friendship was more than okay with that.
