Bast opened her mouth to tell him that it wasn't that he was trying to change her, it was that he just was. He was changing the way she thought, the way she acted. He was in her thoughts all the time, even when she didn't want him to be. None of it was his fault, but it was because of him, and that's why she had to go.
But before she could tell him that, he said it.
The sob that was ripped out of her chest then was a raw, harsh sound. It was so loud and unexpected, it startled her. Even more, there were more sounds like that coming out of her after that. And she couldn't get them to stop. The more she tried to control it, the more it wound around her until she couldn't get away from it.
All she could do was shake her head at him, because that was the last thing she wanted to hear. He couldn't love her. Because if he loved her, she was hurting him. And the idea of hurting him, it hurt her. It hurt her. So he couldn't love her. She wouldn't accept it.
Finally, she managed to get out a strangled, "No." After that, all of her sobs started sounding like that word too. And still she couldn't get them to stop. She needed to get away from him. It would stop if she didn't have to see his face, or the look in his eyes. It had to. So she ran out the bedroom door.
