A Quiet Day (tag: Hermod)
One of the things about life, good or bad, was that it marched inexorably onward. Things were still unsettled and up in the air, but her pantry was empty. So despite not knowing how things were with Idun and Bragi, since no one bothered to tell them anything, Sigyn set out to walk to the one grocery store in Nowthen. Unsurprisingly, Loki liked being fed.
True, she could have handled things differently. It wasn’t as though they needed to do things the mortal way. But Sigyn had found that she liked interacting with the people in the little town. It had been only her and Loki in the cave for so long, just the two of them with only the occasional visit from Hel or Idun, with only temporary escapes for herself every century or so. Being around others again was almost heady.
And it was a real treasure to be able to walk in the sunshine. For too long, the only weather she got to experience was what she could see outside the mouth of the cave. Granted, there was still a chill in the air, it was not quite yet spring, and in Minnesota spring seemed sluggish about arriving anyway. But the sky was blue and clear, and the air was crisp and clean, and she loved being able to walk the few miles into the small town.
While she walked, with only a car or two passing, Sigyn plotted out a grocery list in her head. She was pretty sure that Loki had made his way through all things that were considered “munchies”: chips, snack cakes, popcorn, any and all dips. Those needed to be replenished along with the things she’d need to make the basic meals she liked to provide. Maybe a stew this week. It seemed like a good time for stew with some nice fresh vegetables. Perhaps she’d make some bread too, and in that case she would need to pick up a bit more yeast.
Though she didn’t realize it, Sigyn began to hum a mindless, meandering tune as she walked. The tenseness that had pervaded lately because of what happened to Bragi and Idun was actually easy to compartmentalize. She’d had centuries of practice while taking care of Loki on the rock. The worrisome things got put into a pocket in the back of her mind, so that she could concentrate on the task at hand. When that was completed, she could take the worrisome things out again and deal with them. So today, she was concentrating on the simple things that needed to be done, and in those mundane operations, Sigyn found a bit of happiness.
Really, she was owed that. At the very least. Actually, she was owed quite a bit more than that. After all that had been done to her, it would serve them right if she went to Frigg and Odin and demanded recompense for her losses. That was something else that she would think about later. She doubted she would truly be heard right now anyway, with everything else that was happening. Once things settled down, she’d come back to this idea. Because somehow, she didn’t think it was going to go away.
