Nyx opened a drawer with a yank only to close it a moment later with a frustrated sound as she did not find what she was looking for. Then she moved to the next drawer. The problem with her kitchen was that it had been modified repeatedly over the years, expanded and added onto, new walls added, new appliances included, until it was a bit of a Frankenstein of a room. Of course, that just meant that it fit in with every other part of her home, but it was not currently helping her locate what she wanted to find.
She needed a knife. Any knife would do. Well not a butter knife, something with an edge. Actually anything with an edge would do too. Perhaps some scissors. Nyx was certain she had some kitchen shears in here somewhere. Hadn't she bought some? She thought she'd gotten some that were battery powered to cut on their own, from QVC. Where had those gone?
Another drawer, another frustrated sound, and another slam. Nothing in that drawer would help either. Night's glance landed on the box sitting upon her kitchen table, just waiting for her to open it. But it had that horrible packing tape with the little strings embedded within it, which made it nearly impossible to rip. It had to be cut, so she needed a bladed instrument of some kind, and apparently none were currently being kept in this room in her home!
Perhaps in the second parlor on the fourth floor in the western wing? Nyx grabbed the box from the table and dashed up one and a half flights of stairs, went down the hall, took an elevator up, crossed across a balcony to the down escalator then cut up a ramp and another flight of stairs until she got to her desired destination. She set the box down on the black velvet chaise and went to the library table in the corner. There was a small drawer there. It stuck when it was humid. Or today, it seemed, as she gave an extra hard tug to get it open. But she was rewarded for her efforts with a pair of scissors right in the very middle.
Nyx grabbed them with a loudly proclaimed “Aha!” Then she swiftly advanced on the box, planning to do some serious damage to the packaging tape to get to the prize inside. She needed to get it unboxed and set up before her husband discovered that she'd ordered something else from one of those wonderful infomercials on late night television. He kept threatening to turn off the cable when she did that.
Nyx quickly sliced through the tape, pulled the top flaps open, looked in and grinned. It was perfect.
