The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports [tag: Everyone Who Wants To!]
Churchill Downs was all a flutter with activity. Which made sense. It was the most exciting two days of the year at the Louisville, Kentucky track. Zeus had been on site since early yesterday. Mostly for networking purposes, as while he had interest in the Oaks -the filly race held on Friday, from a gambling side of things, he had other things on his mind. He had a horse in the Derby.
It was a very tricky business, racing horses. He couldn't very well breed, race and gamble under his own name. No, that's what aliases were for. He also had co-owners to keep things less suspicious. Besides, then he could easily blame it on others when things didn't go as planned and it wasn't only his investment going sour if the horse didn't win.
He'd spent the better part of the morning schmoozing with other owner and trainers, meeting jockeys, eying up the competition, placing discreet bets with a bookie in Vegas via teleconference and showing off his wife. The latter part was his favorite, well, that and the actual wagering. But Hera was a very beautiful woman and she knew it, and she carried herself like a confident woman who knew it, which Zeus very much appreciated. She always looked put together and refined, even when wheelbarrows of soiled hay and horse dung are wheeled past. Even as he proudly displayed and patted down this years prize hot Thoroughbred from his stables to show Hera, she still held face.
But that part of the day was mostly over. Oh, there would be friendly jibes between other owners and himself as the day went on, as they ran into each other areas of Churchill Downs, but now there was mostly socialization time until the parade of the horses happened shortly before race time. Zeus was excited, though his face didn't show it. He simply smiled in his soft gray suit and equally soft blue tie, shook hands with those who he knew and those he didn't, and mentally prepared himself for one of the most exciting two minutes in sports.
And he was pleased, one of the horses he had been concerned about had been scratched yesterday from the race and was no longer a threat. Which was an added bonus to his mood and the day.
He took a deep breath as another well-wisher part their company and turned to his wife. “The excitement is almost palatable, wouldn't you say?”
